The 2024 Backlog Challenge

We all have gigantic backlogs, right?  Dozens of games.  Hundreds of games.  Thousands of games.  We've always wanted to play our dusty copy of Dragon Warrior 2, because everyone tells us it's a stone-cold classic. 

But who has the time, right?

Well, we made the time in 2021 (and 2022 and 2023).  And some of us nailed it.  Some of us did rather well.  Some of us put in a respectable effort.  And some people completely failed.

Welcome to Round Two Three Four.  Apply whatever necessary lessons learned from previous years, and good luck.

• Participating users will create an initial post with a list of games that they want to finally beat in 2024.
• The list can be as big or small as you want.  5 games?  Fine.  10 games?  Better.  25 games? Go for it.  50 games?  You're a crazy person, but I believe in you.
• Please use that same post to make updates and track your progress throughout the year.  That way it will be much easier to see how everyone is doing.  You can still make new posts to notify everyone of updates, or discuss whatever you want, but let's have everyone track their progress in each of their OP.
• What constitutes 'beating' a game?  That's up to you.
• What games are in scope?  All of them.
• Can you amend your list later?  Try not to.  I mean, I won't stop you, but this is the backlog challenge.  Not the "What Games Have you Beat Recently" thread.  Try not to change it.
• Try to have your list together by January 1st.  Once it's posted and the new year begins, consider it final.

Most of my game time this year went towards the N64 topic. Thanks to that I haven't played much on the PS5 I bought yet. In 2024 I also want to push the Gamecube topic a bit. I have some games I definitely want to beat, but I don't want to pin down everything for the year and stuff for completion topics is also dependant on what others beat.

My short list is extremely long this year because I still didn't like some of the limitations I had in 2023 even though I expanded things.

Big changes for 2024: smaller goal. 50 games was close to attainable, but it ate all my free time. I really want to have the freedom to go after several really long games this year, rather than bounce between shorter ones in order to stay on track. So, I'm reducing the goal to 30 total with no console specific goals this time.

Also, There are still 3 games that were holdovers from 2022 that I didn't finish in 2023. Some I still didn't start. Those are MUST BEAT titles in order to consider the year a success.  The other stuff carried over from 2023 are still just general population for now.

Aside from longer games, my main focuses will be: Beat the Wii U & DS/3DS - Those console lists contain just about every single unbeaten game I own for those platforms. Maybe next year I can finish a console or two completely.  The steam list is massive. I put a ton of point & click stuff, several Nancy Drews (there's over 30 to get through so gotta knock out a chunk), and a bunch of more recent FMV stuff I'm curious about.

Of course aside from these, I'll still be working through my Game Boy and CDi challenges but there's no set list as those are selected through polls.

I have seen this thread for many years and thought I should post with you.  My problem is that my backlog list has many different faces.  The entire list would be impossible to complete in a year even if I was independently wealthy and did nothing but play games.

Anyway, I typically generate two to four sub-lists during the year when I know I will have a lot of time off work to play.  Posting the whole list or even trying to decide on a 2024 list might just depress me . . .

Anyway, here are some games that would be near the top of my various lists

• Xbox - Red Dead 2, Cyberpunk, Control (I have physical copies)

There are just so many that usually what I do is try to get down to 5 games that I want to play in a given time period.  I am conscious to mix genres so that I am not playing multiple examples of the same genre at the same time.  For example, I started these 5 games not too long ago.  I've finished 3 and plan to finish them all before 2024

I've found I'm struggling with the lack of "hype"/an attraction point with some of the games (my off list stuff were newer gets like Super Mario Wonder or Live a Live, games that had something I was looking forward to experiencing). It's not even necessarily tied to the game quality since my list was a mix of some solidly average games and some very well received games, I just don't have the motivation that says hey go play this game instead of shiny new game.

My 2023 backlog challenge was unfortunately a failure. But I remain hopeful that next year I'll be able to knock out a good chunk of my actual gaming backlog. I'll update this list in the upcoming weeks, but here's my first attempt. I basically chose a bunch of NES games that I'd like to play for next year's NES challenge including a bunch of games that I've never played or finished. I then added most of the Famicom exclusive games in my collection. Rummaging through my box of cartridge-only games, I also found a bunch of games that I forgot I even had.

Edit: I've been highlighting certain games that have a higher priority for me or that I've been wanting to beat or re-complete really badly. I think that this might make my choice a bit easier on what to play exactly when the new year rolls around.

Last year I successfully focused on beating a specific monetary amount of games and games in high-profile, popular franchises that I'd never beaten before. However, over the last two years, it's become abondantly clear that I've neglected certain consoles.

To alleviate that issue, my goals this year are to:
