Ran-Over Possum Man

I decided to make Stupidman for the Game Boy instead of the NES. I decided that the name Stupidman was stupid, so I changed it. Basically, the game will be mostly the same, instead it will be on the Game Boy. This is a screenshot of level 1. Ran-over Possum Man must pass twenty cars to get to the next level. If he crashes into a car, the counter that counts down resets to 20. There's no score here this time, it's just a see if you can get to the end type of game. This is because there

Q is for quit

I've decided to stop working on Q. It just doesn't seem to be a very interesting game. I tried to make a version of Venture for the Odyssey 2, but I deemed it impossible due to the entering and exiting points of each room and tracking them. I even got rid of one room and it still was too much. So I've decided to quit Odyssey 2 programming and return to my Game Boy games. Even though they will never get published. I don't know why. Was "Frank the Fruit Fly" crappy? I returned to the Ugly Upp

Push the button, Frank!

(Yes, it's an MST3k reference.) So I was having a hard time with the game. I actually announced I was giving up on it. But today, I took a long hard look at the game and code, and worked on it and discovered a few things I didn't know in the process. And now the game works correctly. Frank needs to go into the igloo and press the button inside to be able to pass the igloo. Right now if you pass the igloo, it just goes back to the title screen since I haven't programmed what happens after the igl

password code fixed!

I finally got it so you can erase one letter at a time when entering passwords. I knew that code would work, but it wasn't working. I discovered that I had to put the variables I was using in bank 4 also in bank 0. This morning I added level 30. It may seem very difficult at first, but not when you're the one making the game and discovered the way to beat it. Going into designing level 30, I wanted to make a simple level design but have it be really hard to complete. I think I mad

One game in search of a publisher.

So I've been tweaking more and more my GoSub border image. It now looks like this: The maximum number of colors the border can have is 16. That isn't a big deal yet (there's only 12 or so). But I don't want to make the border too distracting from the game. Also, I changed the coral so it looks more like seaweed. I attempted to make it like Super Mario Bros., but the coral in that game is 16x16 pixels so that wouldn't work since my coral is only 8x8. So I designed something differe

Nine pineapples!

Even though I haven't a level yet that does it, I made it so if I felt like it, I could put nine pineapples on the screen all at once. I tried to reduce compiling time, I got it down to two minutes, that's down from the 3-4 minutes I was putting up with unwillingly. I also made a Super Game Boy border for the game. I moved a bunch of stuff around, I put the Super Game Boy border in bank 2. I put the main "engine" and most of the title screen stuff in bank 0. Puzzle data is now stored i

Nincompoop

I've been working on a new Game Boy game called "Nincompoop." It's about a piece of poop that goes around the screen collecting poop that pops up in random places. You can download the latest version on the official Nincompoop website. I've added a title screen with music. I need some feedback about the music though. It never hurts to have another set of ears listening to it. I've been listening, and tweaking, and listening again for so long, it's become normal. Anyway, press Start on the title

My history teacher in living color (part 2)

So I was trying to make two palettes for the sprites in Super Game Boy. I discovered that isn't possible and I needed to scale back the number of colors of the sprite down to 3. This is what it looks like in Super Game Boy or Game Boy Color now: And this is for a regular Game Boy: Because I wanted to keep the Game Boy colors like that, I had to make the lemon on the title screen black. although it is yellow on Super Game Boy and Game Boy Color. I only h

My history teacher in living color

So I worked on that Game Boy game I was working on earlier but quit working on to focus on my Virtual Boy game. I decided to play around a little bit to see if I could use more than just four colors. After a visit to the documentation, I was able to get this: In case you're wondering, I figured the best bet would be to have the guy wear a Sesame-Street-Ernie type shirt. Why? Because of the shoe color for the black and white original Game Boy. It only supports four colors instead of th

My history teacher ate lemons.

Today I worked on music for the title screen of my new Game Boy game. This is all I'll do today because I don't feel like working very hard on things. There's all these projects I start. And I finish like 25% of them. And I work really hard on them and I still don't get much done. I want to take a minute to talk about hemmorhoids. There's this disc-shaped bump up my butt. Or at least I think it's disc-shaped. It feels like it anyway. Sometimes I'd have bloody stools. But those we

Moves counter

I thought I'd be done after making a lot of changes, but I thought of one more thing I could put in the game: A moves counter! That was missing! So I put one in. This was surprisingly easy to add in the game. I made it so after you move 255 times, the move counter stays at 255. Haven't actually needed to use 255 moves. And I hope the puzzles don't need 255 moves to complete. I like to think of the moves counter as the "score" for this game. But the lower the number the better. So

Mega Cat Studios order

I got the order today from Mega Cat studios. Inside the box was two Game Boy games. They didn't come with a regular cardboard box. They came with a plastic holder. And apparently Infinitron is not for the regular Game Boy after all but for the Game Boy Color. So I'll have one game to review instead of two. That game will be Retroid. And I will review it as soon as I can. Unfortunately I ALSO got a jury duty summons to deal with. I think they should make it a full-time job, like a lawyer. So peop

Mean Santa

Tim Duarte and I are working on bringing his game Mean Santa to the Game Boy. I have been programing it and he has been giving me feedback about it. Not that I'd get it completed by Christmas, but perhaps we'll do a Christmas in July and release it then or something. I have been making it work for Game Boy Color and Super Game Boy, as well as just regular Game Boy, all in one cartridge. These screenshots are from the Game Boy Color mode. The Super Game Boy mode has its own border and color

Levels 1 & 2.

I was able to put the pineapples in the game. I made a couple of levels. The game is different from Lazlo's Leap in that you can jump over nothing. I made it like that to make creating puzzles easier. One thing you can't do is jump over a pineapple and land on another one. So that makes this puzzle harder. But it's still easy. This morning I worked on making another level, this time with four pineapples. I also added the ability to reset the puzzle you're on by pressing the S

Level 38 of Ugly Uppity Umpire

Gee, does all this talk about my butt hurting really warrant 15 comments? I just thought it would be interesting to share my trials and tribulations of my life. After all, that's what a blog does. And I have no one else to tell except those who read it. I still put neosporin on it even though it doesn't really help. 4 more days until my doctors visit. Anyway, to the purpose of today's blog. I added a teleportation device to Ugly Uppity Umpire. I wanted the guy to disappear off screen and th

Level 3, other changes

So I decided to put the level select screen at the title screen. You press up or down to select a game, then start to start it. I added a new level. which is in my opinion, the hardest one yet. I also added a short level completed jingle, a sound for successfully moving a pineapple, and a buzz for moves that aren't allowed. I'd like to either cut the music off or make a new song. Most likely I'll cut the music in game. I worked for about 6 hours on this this morning trying

level 17

Today I made level 17 of Ugly Uppity Umpire. Now I'm continuing to work on this and other things since it got cooler. But I am so bored. I guess I'll go through the Game Boy collection. I can't add to it because all the listings are either stuff I don't want or stuff that is too expensive on eBay. I don't know, life seems so hard at this point when all you are all the time are bored and sleepy.

I need your opinion on something.

I want to put a lemon in for Frank to bite and gain health in before the final "battle." (I call it a battle even though it'll be just Frank dodging shots for two minutes.) I designed two lemons. For those who haven't looked closely at a lemon, it has these tiny little bumps on them, which is what I was trying to convey. But what color should I make them? The one on the left has them middle gray (like the grass) and the one on the right has them white (like the background). I can't decide which

I know now what I want to do.

Working on Frank the Fruit Fly for Game Boy again. It had been a few days I took off. Even still I forgot what I wanted to do next. I went ahead and made a screen for level 3. I made a better saving game noise. After much trial and error, I finally made the beginning to level 3. While it's not a screen you can lose health on, it's still a big step since I needed to continue the work on the beginning of level 3. I found that the game did not save health properly, so I think I fixed

HERTS Game Boy

I spent most of the day yesterday and this morning and fixed what I had and I think I finished the game. I am waiting for feedback. I want to know how well I did this time around. And a publisher to publish the game would be really nice. Just e-mail me if you're interested. Here is a link to the game's ROM: Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland thread in AtariAge. Something odd I discovered. I had been putting in #pragma bank 3 in the level defeated tune code, but discovered if I lef

Here is my history teacher.

So I took some time to work on this some more. I had a tough time because it wasn't wokring right. I was doing everything correctly, but it decided to not obey me. But I finally got it to do something I wanted it to. Get to the screen with my history teacher on it. There he is. He has a little 2-frame animation walk when you move him, much like the umpire in Ugly Uppity Umpire. I should mention that he is in color if you put the game in a GBC. Just three colors, though (red, yellow, a

GoSub release candidate #1

I finished the game. I programmed the ending yesterday and the Easter egg this morning. Now I need to test it. Who will help me test the game? You can download what I have of the game here. (Link to AtariAge.) It took me a little over 4 months from beginning to now to make the game. When I started, I never would have guessed I would make a Super Game Boy border for it, and learn how to do such a thing in the process. It's stuff like this that helps me to learn and make better games in the future

GoSub Game Boy

I FINALLY got bankswitching to work on GoSub. It is now a 64k game. I'm up to 13 levels designed and put in the game. I am aiming for 30, an ending, and an Easter egg. I am only using about 40% of my total space, but now that I understand bankswitching, I can always just add more space if I need to. Provided the levels I am making don't get too complicated because I only have about 4% of the bank where I am putting in the main game left. Most of the recent time has been figuring out ho

GoSub for game boy again

So the canoeing game works on the Odyssey 2, but I got sick of working on it, so I went back to another project I had: GoSub for Game Boy. The last time I left it, I could not get the octopi to stay within the boundaries even though I told them to. Well, I worked on this yesterday and I think I have solved it. Then a few other problems popped up. Trying to fix these brought up some other problems. So (even though I don't exactly know what I am doing here), I logically thought (even though t

GoSub for Game Boy - update on 5/8/2022

Today is mothers' day. When you are done reading this, phone your mom. She's the reason you're here. Unless she's dead. I made a new GoSub title screen. I was learning all about bankswitching, stuff I didn't know. I made a little animation on the GoSub title screen. It's a little too long to make a GIF out of it. So here's a little picture of it. I thought it would be better than one static image that didn't do anything. I decided to make the O in "GOSUB" round instead of an oval.
