Frank the Fruit Fly: Igloo.

I had to get rid of the spider web screen. I worked on the game all last night. I got bank 1's compiling time from around 2-3 minutes down to 35 seconds or so. And I fixed some other things as well. And I began level 2 work. Here's Frank in level 2 in front of an igloo. In order to pass this screen, Frank will go into the igloo and push a button located inside. But I haven't gotten that far yet. I just started work on level 2. The next thing I want to work on is composing music for lev

Frank the Fruit Fly for Game Boy

The time is right. Game Boy deserves Frank the Fruit Fly. I've begun working on a Game Boy version of Frank the Fruit Fly. I made a Pokemon Mini version, which turned out to be the second-largest Pokemon Mini homebrew game ever made. But it had problems. I couldn't get it to save anything, so I had to resort to passwords. Second, the tiny screen didn't allow for more elaborate things, like, say, quotes. To talk to a thing that can be talked to, go up to it and press B. There are o

Celery level 3 part 2

So I am calling level 3 finished. After I transformed it from a glitchy mess into something that looks halfway decent. It took about 3 or 4 days of work to complete the level, but I did it. The blocks travel horizontally. Your job is to get to the other side by hopping on the blocks. It's a lot like the part with the logs (the upper part of the screen) in Frogger. But unlike Frogger, I designed it so you can travel to the edge of the screen and come back on the other side. This is beca

Celery level 3 part 1

I made five blocks appear "randomly" on the screen. I'm going to try to have Mr. Celery jump on each block and go up. Once he reaches the top, he'll be at the bottom again. He'll need to travel ten screens to complete the level. If Mr. Celery ends up in the water, he'll lose a life and begin again at the bottom. Or else he'll get a point. So I guess you could get more than 50 points in this level if you want to lose lives in order to do so. The ice blocks are like the logs in Frog

Celery level 2 part 3

After getting some feedback about how the game played, I decided to make some changes to level 2. Here is what it looks like now. The lasers will shoot in the middle of the top, and at the sides and will sometimes be below. What the celery is doing in a spaceship shaped like a banana is anyone's guess, and the fact that the blockers look like stalks of celery isn't exactly helping his cause, but I need them to be green because there is no color left. It's a lot like a Game Boy: You onl

Celery level 2 part 2

Today's work was making the game fair. This means that all four lasers have to shoot the same distance. This proved hard to do since I had to move the blockers a lot. I finally got it working after all day working on this. It also means that the blocker has to be directly on top or right below the ship in the middle with no space between them. This is because the width is longer than the height. I don't think I can make a space between them, and I don't want to work on this any more so it w

Celery - level 2 " Spacing Out"

Work on level two of my Channel F game has begun. It took longer than usual due to the fact the computer was not cooperating with me until it decided it had itself enough fun and began to work. So in level 2, Mr. Celery is in a spaceship. Lasers are coming at him from four directions and he needs the help of the blockers to block the lasers from destroying his ship. I haven't put in the blockers yet. They will be green and show outside his ship. Pressing left on the joystick will make a blo

Celery - level 1 "I Herd It."

Level 1. The beginning of a new video game. This is the first level for "adventures of the stalk of celery." I dropped the "50-foot-tall" part of the name. So Mr. Celery finds himself in the middle of an elephant stampede. Your job is to avoid the elephants. They come in different speeds. First the slow ones, then the middle ones, then the fast ones. After elephant number 30, the game would switch to the second level. But since I haven't made it yet, it just ends. I just had an idea wh

Channel F news bulletin

I got back into the Channel F again. I had to hook it up to my VCR and then to the TV instead of bypassing the VCR to get a stable, colored picture on the thing. And that's not all. I'm back to programming for it as well. I want to make a "trimerous 2" cartridge with Elevator Events, Zyx and Adventures of the 50-foot-tall Stalk of Celery on it. But in order for me to do that, I have to begin work on the latter. Here is a title screen: This morning I actually did the first step of creat

HERTS Game Boy

I spent most of the day yesterday and this morning and fixed what I had and I think I finished the game. I am waiting for feedback. I want to know how well I did this time around. And a publisher to publish the game would be really nice. Just e-mail me if you're interested. Here is a link to the game's ROM: Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland thread in AtariAge. Something odd I discovered. I had been putting in #pragma bank 3 in the level defeated tune code, but discovered if I lef

Yesterday

I spent almost all of yesterday trying to fit all of the bgm I made into the game. I figured out I would need to put a couple of short tunes in bank 3, but otherwise they fit. I tried putting in a short 4-note noise but I couldn't get it to play without it being really scratchy. So before I went to bed and gave up for the day, I tried once more to put in the little victory tune, this time in bank 3. It played, but without the bass tones. So I tried to make some changes, and found out that if I t

Background music composing

So I've been busy composing little tunes for the background music for different levels. Each level will have its own song. For level 3, the snow level, for example, it will play my attempt at transcribing Winter Wonderland. The second part is really hard ("in the meadow, we can build a snowman/and pretend that he is Parson Brown...") so it may be a little off, but it sounds good, so I'm keeping it in. I am figuring I should have enough room for two more songs in bank 1, but that'd be it. Ri

Black and white burgers

So I got some help on my Game Boy version of Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland. It now works again. I originally made it not work after attempting to add a boss screen where you shoot at the boss. I had to change the background from light gray to white. I had to turn off the display for a few frames, and I made it white to make it look less shocking and more smooth when the boss milkshake disappears. Sad, because I liked the way it was, but oh well. I'll do just about anything to make

Keep it simple some more

One thing I wanted to do was change the name of the game. I wanted it to be shorter. "Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland: Zurich In Reach" is quite a mouthful (no pun intended.) So I made it simpler. I think the title screen hamburger looks much better now. It should, since it is in lovely 4 bit color. And my name is in lowercase letters for a reason: To save space. It is made up in 10 8x8 pixel squares. If I were to capitalize the letters, it would be 11. And to make the burger more d

Keep it simple

So with GoSub finished I decided to go back to programming "Hamburgers En Route To Switzerland: Zurich In Reach" for Game Gear again. I looked at what I had. I thought to myself "That cave level looks too crowded and complex with all the colors." So I decided to simplify it. Now, normally when I (or anyone else, for that matter) simplify something, it usually looks more simple. But this time, I felt like simplifying the background was a good step to make it look better. This is what the cave lev

The death of PayPal

I want to know why more and more online stores are not taking PayPal. What is wrong with PayPal? Is there something wrong with it? It's like my money is useless to them. It's like they don't want it. That's what I feel when I go to an online store and discovering they don't take PayPal. I don't have a credit card so I can't do Google Pay. What's more is I don't want a credit card.

Mega Cat Studios order

I got the order today from Mega Cat studios. Inside the box was two Game Boy games. They didn't come with a regular cardboard box. They came with a plastic holder. And apparently Infinitron is not for the regular Game Boy after all but for the Game Boy Color. So I'll have one game to review instead of two. That game will be Retroid. And I will review it as soon as I can. Unfortunately I ALSO got a jury duty summons to deal with. I think they should make it a full-time job, like a lawyer. So peop

GoSub release candidate #1

I finished the game. I programmed the ending yesterday and the Easter egg this morning. Now I need to test it. Who will help me test the game? You can download what I have of the game here. (Link to AtariAge.) It took me a little over 4 months from beginning to now to make the game. When I started, I never would have guessed I would make a Super Game Boy border for it, and learn how to do such a thing in the process. It's stuff like this that helps me to learn and make better games in the future

One game in search of a publisher.

So I've been tweaking more and more my GoSub border image. It now looks like this: The maximum number of colors the border can have is 16. That isn't a big deal yet (there's only 12 or so). But I don't want to make the border too distracting from the game. Also, I changed the coral so it looks more like seaweed. I attempted to make it like Super Mario Bros., but the coral in that game is 16x16 pixels so that wouldn't work since my coral is only 8x8. So I designed something differe

Game Boy homebrew (part 2)

So I went ahead and bought Retroid and Infinitron for Game Boy. I don't know if Infinitron can be playable on a regular Game Boy or not because the website's screenshots were in color, which I guess is okay since I have a Game Boy Color, but I am looking for stuff to play on just a regular Game Boy. As I understood and gathered, Retroid is similar to Arkanoid and Infinitron is similar to Robotron 2084. Hopefully Retroid will be better than my Game Boy games Super Breakout and Alleyway. But there

Game Boy homebrew

Where can I buy physical copies of homebrew games for the Game Boy? I've been working on GoSub and it's making me want to try out some other Game Boy homebrew games. I made a couple of changes to the border. I think it looks better. I also made the sub fall apart when it crashes. It adds a touch of realism instead of just stopping when it crashes. But I think of the poor crew drowning when I hit something when I test it now. Also, would anyone like to publish it when it's done? Th

Super Game Boy border

I have been working on this almost all morning long. I started at about 1 a.m. and it's after 9 a.m. now. But I finally made a Super Game Boy border for GoSub GB. I had to think a litlte when I was designing it. I thought about what I wanted it to look like. I took the sprites from the game, enlarged them, colored them good and this is what I ended up with (eventually) What do you think? I found and fixed a bug pertaining to the space character. I tested it on a real Super Game Boy and

Bank 3 is where it's at.

So right now bank 3 is 48% free. Which is, due to changing circumstances, where I have to put the rest of the game. I will cram as many levels as I possibly can in this bank and then put the ending and Easter egg in bank 2. So here's how GoSub GB is shaping up: bank 0 - main game "engine" bank 1 - data for levels 1-25 bank 2 - ending, Easter egg bank 3 - data for levels 26-end I have a small amount of room left in banks 0 and 1. I can't put it in bank 2 because th

GoSub for game boy again

So the canoeing game works on the Odyssey 2, but I got sick of working on it, so I went back to another project I had: GoSub for Game Boy. The last time I left it, I could not get the octopi to stay within the boundaries even though I told them to. Well, I worked on this yesterday and I think I have solved it. Then a few other problems popped up. Trying to fix these brought up some other problems. So (even though I don't exactly know what I am doing here), I logically thought (even though t

Canoeing fixed

It took at least a couple of hours straight of coding and rearranging code, but I finally got it working again. I never did figure out what the problem was though, I just knew it had something to do with one of the variables. I don't know the problem with the variable, so I was really flying blind here. So now with the problem fixed, the next step is to test it on a real Odyssey². That will have to wait until later today because it's 3 a.m. and my eye hurts and I'm sleepy. It's bedtime
