SERIES VS FRANCHISE

Affects Custom, Maniac, and Lunatic Difficulty Participants

So any game and its sequels(if there are any) can be considered both a series and a franchise. In order for a 'spin off' to be considered its own series, there should be at least 3 titles to make up that series. Or if there are 3 games unrelated to the 'main series', but are not similar to each other, that can warrant a 'Spin Off' series.

  • The Final Fantasy Franchise
    • Main Series(1, 4, 7, 12, 14)
    • Tactics Series(PS1, Advance, A2)
    • Crystal Chronicles Series(Original, Ring of Fates, The Crystal Bearers)
    • Chocobo Series(Chocobo's Dungeon 2, Chocobo Racing, FFF: Chocobo Tales)
    • Dissidia Series(Original, 012, NT)
    • Spin Offs(Mystic Quest(SNES), 4 Heroes of Light, World of Final Fantasy)

  • The SaGa Series/Franchise(Final Fantasy Legend 1, 2, and 3 are part of this series despite the name change for the US).

  • The Kirby Franchise
    • Main Series(Adventure, Squeak Squad, Triple Deluxe)
    • Spin Offs(Pinball Land, Star Stacker, Tilt 'n' Tumble)

  • The Metroid Franchise
    • Main Series(Original, Super, Fusion)
    • Prime(1, 2, 3)
    • Prime Spin Offs(Pinball, Hunters, Federation Force)

And to potentially help someone out: the Donkey Kong (Country, Jungle Beat, Barrel Blast), Yoshi (Island, Story, Touch & Go), and Wario (Land, World, WarioWare) games would be considered their own franchises, not part of the Mario franchise.

Hopefully, this helps with the differentiation of what is considered a series and/or a franchise.

From this point on, I'll leave it up to judgement's of "The Brave Few" to make the best call of whats what.

AO98's 31-Day VGMC 3 Challenge List
Hard Difficulty

Day 1 (Intro/Title Screen): Title Screen - Cyber Shadow (Various, 2021)*
Day 1 and I'm already using a game from my last list😅. Regardless, the game is great and the entire soundtrack matches it and then some.

Day 2 (Opening Stage/Grass Lands): The Flatlands - Octopath Traveler (Switch/PC, 2018)
All the music for the overworld sections are pretty great with Flatlands being one of the better themes... the Sunlands theme is still top though.

Day 3 (Simulation Game): Birth of a People - ActRaiser (SNES, 1990)
I haven't played many simulation games, with the only ones being SimCity 3000, SimCity 4, and my Day 7 Selection.  Yeah, never even played ActRaiser. But this song's good so here it is.

Day 4 (Impressive/Mind-Blowing):  Gust Planet Zone Act 1 - Sonic The Next Level (Mega Drive, 2015)
Take a listen to the Original Song as well. And if you're really interested, visit the Sonic-Retro/Download Page.

Day 5 (PlayStation Exclusive): Girl Who Stole the Stars - Chrono Cross (PlayStation, 1999)
Not a big PlayStation person, so this was another tricky day. I only remembered it after thinking
about potentially including the
Radical Dreamers version on some other day.

Day 6 (Strange/Weird): Orn Mantra - Thunder Force VI (PlayStation 2, 2008)
On its own, this is great. But its baffling as to why its in a Thunder Force game. Being used as the theme of the last stage.

Day 7 (Computer Games): The Machine - 3D Ultra Lionel Traintown Deluxe (PC, 2000)
Up until a few days ago, I wasn't aware this game had a soundtrack. Or how good this track was. If I had to guess, we didn't have headphones and someone older then me turned off the music and I never bothered turning it back on.

Day 8 (Mini/Bonus Game): Bonus Room Blitz - Donkey Kong Country (GBC, 2000)
If you didn't care for Donkey Kong Land's OST, this is just the same, BUT. ITS. IN. COLOR. I think most of the level designs are the same compared to the SNES game, with a new level tossed in too.

Day 9 (Same Game, Different Song/Region): Opening - Mega Man 6 (NES, 1993)
US and JPN
Both intros are great, with the Famicom theme edging out the NES counterpart IMO. There might have been a chance the US version would have never seen the light of day had Nintendo not published the game for NA (the JPN theme was used for the version on the Anniversary Collection).

Day 10 (Nostalgic): Vegetable Valley - Kirby's Adventure (NES, 1993)
I think this was the first NES game I ever completed. And I still prefer this (music and all) over the remake for the GBA.

Day 11 (Rom-Hack/Fan-Game): Dive Man - Rockman 4 Minus Infinity (NES, 20XX)
I must confess that I've never beaten this without cheats. But even with them, it truly is a fantastic, creative hack, which is loaded with stellar arrangements from a wide variety of games. Pharaoh Man was supposed to be the original pick, but Day 3 botched that up so we have Dive Man instead (presumably @ZeldaFreak's soon to be "favorite theme"😏)

Day 12 (Wild West): GBA Sunset Wilds - Mario Kart Tour (Android/iOS, 2019)
I really do hope that Sunset Wilds makes it way into Mario Kart 9, if not for this wonderful (then fully orchestrated) arrangement, to at least add more Super Circuit courses(they were some of my favorites from Mario Kart 8).

Day 13 (Remakes/Remasters): Lava Reef Zone Act 1 - Sonic Mania (Various, 2017)
I think its safe to say that Tee Lopes' remixes for the returning Mania stages are the definitive versions. (S&K Version)

Day 14 (Dungeon): Flow with the Wind - Blaster Master Zero 2 (Various, 2019)
Probably not the first thing you'd expect when someone said dungeon music, but its a damn fine composition regardless. Also, BMZ 2 is a great game. Easily my favorite of the trilogy(this and Montoj's 'overworld' music help).

Day 15 (Boss Battles): Major Boss Battle - Freedom Planet (Various, 2014)
Captures the energy of the games' bosses perfectly, especially the runner bosses.

 Day 16 (Retro Day)
A: Wily Battleship Stage - Mega Man IV (Gameboy, 1993)
B: Walk the Invisible - Mega Man 7 (SNES, 1995)
CTengu Man - Mega Man 8 (Saturn, 1997)
D: Freeze! - Paper Mario (N64, 2000)
I checked to see if I was compensating now for a lack of Mega Man games from the previous months. That doesn't appear to be the case though. Just criminally underappreciated by almost everyone else, IMO. As for Paper Mario... its cool.

 Day 17 (Racing/Driving Games): Rainbow Road - Mario Kart 7 (3DS, 2011)
Its been at least 7 years since I last played this course on my 3DS and pretty much forgot how beautiful this piece was (not the typical sounding Mario Kart song).

Day 18 (Short and Sweet): Stage Clear - Hyper Duel (Arcade, 1993)
Its short... and its pretty sweet... yeah😎.

Day 19 (Name Entry/High-Score Screen): Name Entry - Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth (N64, 1998)
It took a lot of willpower to put a new game here rather then use Thunder Force IV/V or Gleylancer again. For what its used for, it sounds good.

Day 20 (Homebrew/Indie Game): Vitality - Helltaker (PC, 2020)
Nice little puzzle game with great music. FYI, the game is FREE.

 Day 21 (Casino/Carnival): Casino Night Zone Act 2 - Sonic Generations (3DS, 2011)
One of the last days I had figured out. Most of the games I played/remember playing don't have these areas in them, with Sonic being the exception. Also, just a really nice arrangement.

 Day 22 (Saturday Morning Cartoons)
A: Zone J - Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers (NES, 1990)
B: Super Fighting Robot - Mega Man (1994)
Unlike the Ducktales soundtrack, I hadn't looked into CnD's soundtrack before attempting to beat it. And because of that, it feels even more special to me. Also, I think Zone J is better is then any of the Ducktales songs. As for the choice of Mega Man... I really liked the intro animation (yeah, songs good too).

Day 23 (Free Day or... I Want 3 More Song Slots)
A: Fortress of Philosophy - Raiden V
(Various, 2016)
B: Carry Away - Psychic Force (Arcade, 1995)
(X68000 Arrangement)
CPlanet Timbertree - Super Bomberman R (Various, 2017)
At some point, I told myself that I would include each of these songs. Unfortunately, they either didn't fit somewhere else or something else was better then them so here they are: One of six songs put on the Mini-CD included with the Switch release, a song that I ended up reverse searching from a 10-hour mix of X68000 remixes, and a song that I'm not sure how I found, but I've been loving for the past 4 years.

Day 24 (Pinball): OMAKE 4 (Shin Kyuugyokuden-Etude of Wind) - Dragon's Fury (Mega Drive, 1991)
Better known to non-NA audiences as Devil's Crush MD. This, along with 3 other tunes from Technosoft's library, were hidden alternates for the Main Table theme. From what I've heard, most of the MD music sounds better then the original PC-Engine version.

Day 25 (Acapella): Bergentrückung + ASGORE - Undertale
(Smooth McGroove, Various, 2015)
Ah Undertale. Such an amazing soundtrack. Kinda surprised that it took me this long to finally include a song for one of these challenges.

Day 26 (Shmup): Dezant - Lords of Thunder (TurboDuo, 1993)
Pretty metal stuff here. Something that I wasn't that aware of until recently was that the lead programmer for Thunder Force III left Technosoft in 1991(along with other employees) and went to work at Red Company, developing this and Gate of Thunder.

Day 27 (Unsettling/Foreboding): Maridia Drifting Sand Underwater Area - Super Metroid (SNES, 1994)
To my memory, no other song has managed to instill a feeling that something off screen is stalking me and is readying to attack/kill me, even though I KNOW its not possible.

Day 28 (Final Boss): G Free~Final Dream - Touhou Mutsuigeki~Concealed the Conclusion (PC, 2006)
... I just really like this song.

Day 29 (Secret/Super Boss): THE WORLD REVOLVING - Deltarune (Various, 2018)
I knew I had to include this since the first challenge, I just love this song to death, the energy, instrumentation, the feeling of CHAOS!!!! The big problem was finding a great place to put it. This category was perfect, but the name generator skipped it for challenges 2 and 3. But now, for the 2nd to final day, it truly is the perfect spot for this.

Day 30 (Ending/Credits + Favorite 31-Day VGMC Song)
A: Run to the Future - Broken Thunder (PC, 2007)
B: Supremacy (nesmaster14, C64, 1991)
This makes it three times in a row that I ended one of these with a Thunder Force game. Although it is a fan game, Hyakutaro Tsukumo (Hyper Duel, Blast Wind, Thunder Force V) is responsible for this soundtrack and while some of the other arrangements for BT sound... off, this one is rather nice, if a bit short. At some point, he arranged a version of RttF for a FM-Synth album called "Spirit of Stone" which is an amazing arrangement on an already fantastic album (other personal favs include "HELL HOUND" and "Extreme Fighter").
As for my favorite VGMC-song: Supremacy was a song that I just kept going back to listen to over and over again. I really hadn't had that happen with any other song. Bollywood from Scott Pilgrim and No Way Out from Rolling Thunder 3 did that to me too, but for some reason, they didn't stick. Supremacy just stuck.

     Day 1 Intro/Title - Excitebike - Title Screen (NES)
Nothing especially great here, but this quick 10 second tune from one of the first video   games I ever played will stay with me always.

Day 2 Opening Stage/Grass Lands - Kirby's Dream Land - Green Greens (GB)
Another classic for me; is there anything more happy and upbeat than a Kirby ost?

Day 3 Simulation -  Civilization V - Europe: Sicilienne (PC)
I don't think I've ever played a game more than Civ V. I really like the flute on this track, reminds me a lot of Sugiyama's Dragon Quest.

Day 4 Impressive/Mind Blowing - Star Fox - Corneria (SNES)
A little guitar driven rock under the 80's synth lead fits the game perfectly as your mind explodes from the awesome power of the FX chip!

Day 5 Playstation Exclusive - Gran Turismo - Home (PS1)
I'm kind of surprised I haven't used anything off of this soundtrack yet. I played this so much when I first got my Playstation. So many cool 80/90's cars but I usually bought a used Miata MX5 as my first car and upgrading it to the moon so I could save up for a Skyline.

Day 6 Weird - Resident Evil - Mansion Basement (PS1)
Oh the hornmanity.

Day 7 Computer - Rollercoaster Tycoon - Children of the Regiment (PC)
I played this so much as a kid, so it's probably subjective but all the merry-go-round music is a nostalgia trip.

Day 8 Mini/Bonus Game -  Super Smash Bros. Melee - Targets (GC)
"A new record!"

Day 9 Same Game Different Song - TBD

Day 10 Nostalgic - Microsoft Windows 95 - Canyon (PC)
Not from a game, but considering how much I just played around with our first windows PC when I was a kid, it counts enough to me.

Day 11 Rom Hack - AM2R - Initial Descent (PC)
Hacks aren't really my jam so it took so thinking to find one, but then I just ended up going with Another Metroid 2 Remake.

Day 12 Wild West - Oregon Trail II - Trail 1 (Good) - (PC)
I'm not sure if this is correct title of the song, but this was one of my favorites from the first version of Oregon Trail I had at home.

     Day 13 Remake/Remaster - Metroid 2: Samus Returns - Surface of SR388 (3DS)
And now for the actual remake of the game that got a hacked version...

Day 14 Dungeon -  Crypt of the Necrodancer - Mausoleum Mash (PC)
The whole game is nothing but dungeons and awesome music, like the underground version of Shovel Knight.

Day 15 Boss - Golden Sun - Fusion Dragon (GBA)
This song is bonkers and borderline awful with all the time signatures and asynchronous "melodies", but you couldn't ask for more in an epic rpg final boss battle theme.

Day 16 Retro - Alien 3 - Main Theme (GEN)
I haven't put much from Sega up this round yet so here's one by Matt Furniss. The synth work is so good, it sounds like it could easily be a background track for a Thomas Dolby song.

     Day 17 Racing - Colin McRae Rally 2.0 - Intro (PS1)
Peak 90's European Drum and Bass.

Day 18 Stage Clear - Sonic 3 - Act Clear (GEN)
It's the first non SMB thing I thought of.

Day 19 High Score - Silver Surfer - High Score (NES)
Good a time as any to pull out something from the Super Follin Bros. catalogue

Day 20 Indie - Slime Rancher - Ranch Night Theme (X1/PC)

Day 21 Casino/Festival - Chrono Trigger - Guardia Millenial Fair (SNES)
A little obvious, but it's just a nice little tune I could listen to all day.

Day 22 Saturday Morning Cartoon A - The Incredible Crash Test Dummies - Title Theme (NES)
From the licensed game masters at LJN.
Day 22 Saturday Morning Cartoon B - Pokemon - Main Theme (Italian)
My cousins found this during the early days of Napster, good times.

Day 23 Free Space - Pokemon TCG - Battle Theme (GBC)
I've probably pasted this before on a previous list, but it's one of my favorite songs from a game so I'll put it down again.

Day 24 Pinball - Kirby's Pinball Land - Kracko (GB)
This was one of my earliest Gameboy games I got to borrow from my cousins and I played it so much. I particularity like this track for it's very innocent and whimsical feel.

Day 25 A Capella/Vocals - LoZ: Link's Awakening - Ballad of the Wind Fish (NSW)
LA on the Gameboy is my favorite game, but when Nintendo released the official lyrics for this song, I did not like it at all. After hearing it for so many years with just the musical melody, words did nothing but detract from the beauty. I'm glad the switch remake did not include it and just went with vocables.

Day 26 Shmup - UN Squadron - Front Line Base (SNES)
I never really felt like this served as a shmup kind of song, but it's awesome none the less.

     Day 27 Unsettling - LoZ: Majora's Mask - Okana Valley (N64)

Day 28 Final Boss - Blue Dragon - The Seal Is Broken (360)

Day 29 Secret Boss - Super Mario RPG - Fight Against Culex (SNES)

Day 30 Ending - Blaster Master - Ending (NES)

Past lists:

Day 1 (Title Screen): Title - Overlord (NES), I've done several of these already, so I have to refrain from the Zeldas/Marios/Megamans. It turns out I still have many great title screen songs. I've actually kinda picked a song from Overlord (aka Supremacy in Europe) in VGMC 3 but it was from the C64 version which has entirely different music (so it almost qualifies for day 9 only with a different console instead of region). Both are composed by Jeroen Tel, so both are kickass in their own way. Honorable mentions: Title - MOTHERTitle - Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of DemnosTitle - The Battle of Olympus (I played this one recently and was blown away by the title screen theme), Opening - Super Smash Bros. Melee (Ah nostalgia), Title - The Secret of Monkey Island
Day 2 (Opening Stage/Grass Lands): Stage 1 - Batman Returns, I couldn't really think of many good Grass Lands themes except for maybe Green Greens - Kirby's Dream Land. So, I decided to focus on the Opening Stage themes instead. Another returning category, so I'll stay away from my honorable mentions as I've found more. Although I did put Batman: The Video Game as an honorable mention, Konami's Batman also has a great opening level theme. Honorable mentions: Stage 1 - Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES)Levels 1-3: Parking Garage - Target: Renegade (well I guess it's used in levels 2 and 3 as well but close enough)
Day 3 (Simulation Games): Credits - Captain Tsubasa Vol. II: Super Striker, I do not play simulation games, so I figured I'd probably pick an Animal Crossing song. But it turns out there is one other song from a simulation game that I have in my library, Captain Tsubasa 2. Also it means I don't have to settle on one AC song. Honorable mentions (all AC lol): K.K. Steppe - Animal CrossingK.K. Cruisin' - Animal CrossingStale Cupcakes (Aircheck) - Animal Crossing: City FolkMain Theme - Animal Crossing: New HorizonsBubblegum K.K. (Radio) - Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Day 4 (Impressive/Mind-Blowing): Title - Ghouls 'n' Ghosts (C64), for some reason the only songs I could think of were all C64 songs. However, I think this song stands about the rest in terms of impressiveness. I picked it in VGMC 1, but I couldn't think of a more fitting song. To quote my original comment, "It's crazy how many different sounds Tim Follin managed to squeeze out of an 8-bit machine (a comment on the full OST listed 29 of them) and yet somehow it still feels like a cohesive piece that matches the games theme perfectly. Just watching the oscilloscope view is extremely entertaining in itself." Honorable mention: Monty on the Run (C64) (the musicality of the song is extremely good)
Day 5 (PlayStation Exclusives): The 1st Tide - I.Q.: Intelligent Qube, there's a lot of great PS exclusive music, so I decided to go with something hopefully a little less known (IDK much about PS so hopefully I'm not too far off base). I.Q. has a kickass classical score. The track above is my favorite, but honestly the whole soundtrack is worth a listen. Honorable mentions: Pleasure Quarter - Gravity RushKlaymen's Theme - The NeverhoodSouthern Front Porch Whistler - The Neverhood (technically it was a windows game first but only came to PS for home consoles), Polaroid - Vib-RibbonOverflowing Emotions - Vib-Ribbon
Day 6 (Strange/Weird): Free Money! - Pikuniku, I didn't come up with anything super weird, but I think they fit and they are all listenable. I decided to go with this quirky song for a quirky game. Honorable mentions: Beep Bop Bo Shards - Skullmonkeys (such lovely vocals), Dogsong - UndertaleTemmie Village - Undertale (the first thing I thought of)
Day 7 (Computer Games): Myth (C64), I have no knowledge of music for MSX-2 or Sharp x68000. So, C64 it is. I've featured quite a few C64 tracks in this list and past ones, so I'll try to seek new ground. But of course I still picked a Jeroen Tel tune. Honorable mentions: Title - Gauntlet III (my Follin pick), Spellbound (my Rob Hubbard pick), Wilderness/Title Theme - Golden Axe (I love that intro, especially that gliss at the end of the first two phrases), After the War (another good one by Charles Deenen), Ghosts 'n Goblins (and finally one from Mark Cooksey)
Day 8 (Mini/Bonus Games): Secret Course - Super Mario Sunshine, I'm sure there are billion good ones, but I could only think of two. Still, I really love this one. Honorable mention: Minigame Parasail - Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Day 9 (Same Game, Different Region and Song): Accursed Kingdom - Argos no Senshi (FC/JPN) / Cave - Rygar (NES/USA), I took a look at this list on vgmpf, but I only found one game that song I knew I liked and was changed beyond using different sound hardware (which disqualified all the FDS to NES ports). And this is cheating because I used it on my last list, but I felt I had to include it because I had no clue so much of the music changed. And thank god it did because I like the US version much better.
Day 10 (Nostalgic): Grandma's Theme - Wind Waker, a returning category from VGMC 1. Most of what I said last time still stands. "Gamecube wasn't my first console, but it's the one that I first really got into gaming with and therefore the one I'm most nostalgic for." But this time instead of a SMS track, I'll go with a WW track. I always loved Grandma's Theme and it just sounds like the epitome of nostalgia. Honorable Mentions: Opening - Super Smash Bros. Melee (I mean my comment for it's honorable mention in day 1 was "Ah nostalgia"), A-Type Music - Tetris (GB) (before I got a Gamecube, I had a GBC and while I often played with the sound off, I also loved the Tetris theme)
Day 11 (Rom Hacks/Fan-Games): Oath to Order - Moonfall: A Legend of Zelda Compilation, so I really haven't played any ROM hacks and therefore nothing came to mind. However, I remembered I bought this chiptune Zelda remix cart from our very own @TylerBarnes. That's a good enough excuse as any as to relisten to the full album. I choose Oath to Order because it is one of my favorites and also because the original never stuck out to me as remarkable to be. But, the remix is very well done especially with the smoothly shaped arpeggios. I'm not sure if it's still on sale, but if it is you can buy it here. Honorable mention: the rest of the album
Day 12 (Wild West): New Heights in El Machino - Steamworld Dig 2, my first thought here was SteamWorld Dig 2. It very much has the wild west theme throughout the full game. Honorable mention: Precipice - Steamworld Dig 2
Day 13 (Remakes/Remasters): Tal Tal Heights (Heroic) - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch), most of the remakes that came to mind have very similar music to the original. However, Link's Awakening for Switch is an obvious exception. I went with the great Tal Tal Heights as my pick. Honorable mention: Face Shrine (Level 6 Dungeon) - Link's Awakening (Switch) (I very nearly picked this as I normally don't care as much for the dungeon music and this is very much improved over the original), Title - Link's Awakening (Switch)Sword Search - Link's Awakening (Switch)Overworld - Link's Awakening (Switch)Player Select ZELDA - Link's Awakening (Switch)
Day 14 (Dungeon): The Great Palace - Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, I thought we did this one already, but apparently not. So, time to whip out my Zeldas. I really enjoy Zelda 2's final palace theme. Honorable mentions: Dungeon - The Legend of ZeldaHyrule Castle - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the PastHyrule Castle Interior - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Day 15 (Boss Battles): Pardoner's Dance - Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight, well we've done this multiple times, so I'm all out of choices if you include the honorable mentions. Or so I thought until I remembered the last game I beat had some decent boss tracks. This one is a lot more sparse and less driving than the rest of the boss music, but it's still my favorite. Honorable mention: Assault - Momodora Reverie Under the MoonlightConfrontation - Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight
Day 16A (8-bit): Match 8: Team USSR - Super Dodge Ball, apparently there are still several great NES tracks I've never mentioned. Here's three. Honorable mentions: Fish Got Away - The Blue MarlinHeat Wave - Bionic Commando
Day 16B (16-bit): Opening - Final Fantasy VI, I thought I had used this one before, but it turns out I haven't.
Day 16C (32-bit): Dies Irae (Wolfgang Krauser Theme) - Fatal Fury 2, I think this counts as 32-bit. IDK really.
Day 16D (64-bit): Title - Buck Bumble, always such a fun silly one.
Day 17 (Racing/Driving Games): Las Vegas - Top Gear, I've used my Mario Karts already so on to the other song I really like.
Day 18 (Short and Sweet): Spooktune - Undertale, I love this dumb song. Honorable mention: Victory! - Final Fantasy (the intro fanfare for this category), Item Get - Zelda (Various)Totaka's Song - Various
Day 19 (Name Entry/High Score Screen): Name Entry - The Battle of Olympus, I had a hard time deciding between these three. I ended up going with the Name Entry theme since I feel like a good Name Entry theme is rare. Honorable mention: High Score - EliminatorHigh Score - Commando
Day 20 (Homebrew/Indie Games): Forest - Anodyne, I've featured most indie games with good music I know. But, this is one I've played recently. To be honest, part of the reason I like this one is because it was heavily inspired by Gymnopedie No.1 by Erik Satie (as noted by the composer in the comments).
Day 21 (Gambling/Casino/Carnival Areas): Casino Calavera - Grim Fandango Remastered, gotta love that casino jazz. Honorable mention: The King's Court - Cuphead
Day 22 (Saturday Morning Cartoons): Stage Mushroom Forest - Little Nemo: The Dream Master, I've just beat this game (on the 23rd as I'm writing from the future). I really enjoyed the game and this track remains a standout. Honorable mention: Moon Theme - DuckTales (I've used this one already), Scene 3 - TMNT III: The Manhattan Project
Day 23 (Free Space): Zelda: Breath of the Wild "Kass's Theme" - The Game Brass, I decided to return to remixes with my free space. All of these released since I did the remix edition for VGMC2. And of course I had to pick a song from The Game Brass. They released two albums since then (Brass Castles and Horns of Hyrule) as well as an MSU-1 pack for aLttP. I couldn't not pick this one from their latest album. I'm a sucker for a cadenza and I love the Carnival of Venice references. Honorable mention: Super Mario Land Underground - The 8-Bit Big Band (that Bari Sax...), Zelda Majora's Mask - Oath to Order - Mart0zz (the mythical Mart0zz makes their annual appearance with a banger), Hacking the JANUS System - Julien Mulard (I wanted to call this one out because I normally hate this style of music but this track was really well done)
Day 24 (Pinball Games): Title Theme - Revenge of the 'Gator, I don't know why this was the first thing that came to my mind but it was. Fun fact: this song was unintentionally ripped off my the famous Kick ringtone for the Nokia 3210.
Day 25 (Acapella/Vocals): Douse Shinundakara - Gravity Rush, another returning category. Luckily I was introduced to the Gravity Rush soundtrack in VGMC2.
Day 26 (Shmups/Shooters): Main Theme - Delta, for some reason I missed a lot of good ones the last time this category came up. Honorable mention: Main Theme - EliminatorMain Theme - CommandoEnding - Crisis ForceTitle - Air Fortress
Day 27 (Unsettling/Foreboding): Title - Metroid, a classic. Honorable mention: Sweet Little Dead Bunny - Doom (I've used this for Evil before but unsettling works as well), Ending - Splatterhouse (Arcade) (I used this one for Sad but it also is Unsettling), Your Best Friend - UndertaleUnholy Captives - Return of The Obra Dinn (I wanted to fit in RotOD somewhere but it wasn't as foreboding as I remember)
Day 28 (Final Boss): Gwyn, Lord of Cinder - Dark Souls, I don't care much for boss music so it took a while to find one I like but haven't used before.
Day 29 (Secret Boss): Fight Against Culex - Super Mario RPG, I know this was used in the example but I couldn't think of anything better. Honorable mention: Last Battle - Cave Story
Day 30A (Ending/Credits): Ending - Bandit Kings of Ancient China, a great song that I discovered via @Optomon's NES music list. Honorable mention: Ending - The Typing of the DeadEnding - Blaster Master
Day 30B (Favorite VGMC Song): Four Seasons - WarioWare, Inc. Mega Microgame$!, man there are so many that qualify. Just from earlier in this list I've already used songs from Gravity Rush, The Neverhood, Skullmonkeys, Fatal Fury 2, Top Gear, Crisis Force that I found out about because of past VGMCs. I ended up going with this one because before hearing this song I thought all GBA music was bad. This song blew me away. It still probably could still be improved with better audio quality, but I think it does work well on the GBA. Honorable mentions: Isle Of Inisfree - Endless Ocean: Blue WorldTitle - Gauntlet IIIStage 1&4 Part 1 - Super Spy HunterThe Singing Alarm - SegagagaAlpake Highlands (Paprika) - Them's Fightin' Herds

So, for this list, I'm going to be doing something unusual: I am ONLY (within reason, at least) going to be using songs, or at least game franchises, from my childhood. This was something I wanted to do since the end of the last VGM Challenge, wanted to try something different and challenging. This should be fun.

As per usual, I'll once again be doing Hard difficulty.

My 30 Day VGM Challenge List IV - Hard Difficulty

893ec1a3ccdeb003f50e84238ad63206--zelda-

Day 1: (Intro/Title Screen) | The Legendary Hero - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Gotta keep up the trend of starting and ending all of these lists with songs from the Zelda franchise, and there was no way I COULDN'T start with this one, y'know? I still remember the day I got a Gamecube for Christmas, along with Wind Waker and only Wind Waker. Instantly ran to my room, hooked it up, booted the sucker up, and was greeted with an opening I'll never forget.

Day 2: (Opening Stage/Grass Lands) | Green Hill Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog
Figured this inclusion made perfect sense, given that the first 3 (well, 4 if you count Knuckles) Sonic games played a pretty big part in my childhood.

Day 3: (Simulation Games) | Sporepedia - Spore
I only played a little tiny bit of Spore as a kid, however I didn't play very many games I'd consider "simulation games" as a kid so I had to dig a little deep. Even so, I do have some fleeting memories of some of the earlier stages of Spore, just goofing around as a kid not really fully sure of what I was doing or how to progress, haha. I liked just messing around in it.

Day 4: (Impressive/Mind-Blowing) | The Opened Way - Shadow of the Colossus
I actually never played Shadow of the Colossus as a kid, however I watched multiple playthroughs of it and listened to the soundtrack a TON. This game's OST was immediately what came to mind when I had to decide a song for this category, words cannot describe how incredible this soundtrack was to listen to as a kid. If I had to guess, I'd say this game's OST might've played a part in why I absolutely love epic, sweeping orchestral scores to this day.
(1 Game Reused, 4 Remain)

Day 5: (Playstation Exclusives) | Sleepyhead - LittleBigPlanet 2
I'm actually not 100% sure if this song plays in the game itself, but it's in the OST so it counts. This song means so, so much to me. This is an instrumental version of a song by Passion Pit, called Sleepyhead. This was the song they used for the announcement trailer for this game, and man... I remember when that trailer came out, being SO excited for the sequel to one of my absolute favorite games of all time as a kid. This version of the song really takes me back.

Day 6: (Strange/Weird) | Temmie Village - Undertale
Don't think I really need to explain much about this one, haha. Undertale played a super huge part in what I would consider the end of my childhood, having just turned 14 when it first came out. Love this game (and Deltarune) to death.

Day 7: (Computer Games) | Into Sandy's City - DOOM II
My mom was actually the one who introduced me to the DOOM series as a really young kid, and it was one of my favorite older PC games I played, even if I wasn't the best at it at the time.

Day 8: (Mini/Bonus Games) | Bonus Time! - Donkey Kong Country 3
Definitely one of the most memorable minigame themes from the games I played as a kid. I always loved DKC 3 just as much as DKC 1 & 2, I dunno why it gets so much flak. I still prefer it over DKC 1 honestly.

Day 9: (Same Game, Different Region & Song) | Stardust Speedway Bad Future - Sonic CD
US
JP/EU
This one was super easy for me. I never played Sonic CD until later on in my life, however I listened to the soundtrack every once in awhile as a kid, most notably Stardust Speedway. These songs are both super, super good honestly, although the "hues" of the JPN/EU version are of course iconic, as are the repeating sirens in the background. The US version does have that super stanky electric guitar though!

Day 10: (Nostalgic) | The Orb of Dreamers - LittleBigPlanet
This one's super, super nostalgic for me. LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2 were some of my absolute favorite games as a kid, they were a wonderful outlet for creativity and imagination. If I had to assign a song to my childhood, this one might well be a contender.

Day 11: (Romhacks/Fan Games) | Orb Room - Brutal Mario
I had a lot of trouble with this category. I never really played many fan games or romhacks as a kid, but after sitting there thinking for a few minutes, I dug super deep in to my memories, and I finally remembered a romhack from when I was a kid: Brutal Mario. I used to watch a lot of playthroughs of this romhack when I was a kid, I always enjoyed seeing people struggle with it, haha.

Day 12: (Wild West) | Al's Penthouse - Toy Story 2
I mean, doesn't get much more western than this, haha. Toy Story 2 is actually one of the first games I remember playing, and certainly the first 3D game I ever played. The soundtrack to this game is really, really good, this song in particular being one of the stand outs of the whole OST.

Day 13: (Remakes) | Bloody Tears - Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles
A remake of my very first Castlevania game that I absolutely loved. The game itself is great, but man, the soundtrack to this game is truly fantastic! This is one of my personal favorite versions of Bloody Tears.

Day 14: (Dungeon) | Temple of Droplets - The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
Super underrated track from a super underrated Zelda game. Not much else to say really. Always loved this dungeon as a kid, and I always really loved Minish Cap in general. It's still to this day one of my absolute favorite 2D Zelda games.

Day 15: (Boss Battle) | Stagnox - The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
Yet another super underrated track from a super underrated Zelda game. Fun fact: Spirit Tracks was the first game I remember getting on launch day! I loved Phantom Hourglass so much, I remember being super excited for this game.

Day 16: (Retro Day)
A | 8-bit: Vampire Killer - Castlevania
B | 16-bit: Opus 13 - Castlevania: Rondo of Blood
C | 32-bit: Requiem for the Gods - Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
D | 64-bit: Opposing Bloodlines - Castlevania 64
Tried to stick with a bit of a theme for this day, haha. Also, apparently the PS1 was actually a 32-bit console, which was news to me, up to this point I always thought it was a 64-bit console like the N64. This is convenient for me though, since that meant I could include SotN in the 32-bit category, when there were otherwise very few 32-bit CV games to choose from (if any at all.)

Day 17: (Racing/Driving Games) | DK Mountain & Dino Dino Jungle - Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
I actually very rarely played Mario Kart as a kid, but there was one single time I played MK Double Dash with a group of friends at school during... I don't even remember, some sort of school event, and it was a blast even though I absolutely SUCKED at it since I had never really played Mario Kart up to that point, haha. It was nice though, I really like that memory. DK Mountain was the stage I specifically remember playing, hence choosing this particular song.

Day 18: (Short & Sweet) | All Clear - Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Not much to say about this one, just a really, really solid all clear theme. Castlevania III always kicked my ass as a kid, way more than the first game ever did, haha.

Day 19: (Name Entry/High Score Screen) | Name Entry (2nd-5th Place) - Galaga
One of the few arcade games I played as a kid. My mom introduced me to Galaga at a super, super young age, and I always had a blast playing it.

Day 20: (Homebrew/Indie Games) | Sacrificial - The Binding of Isaac
I never played any homebrews as a kid, so I had to go for an indie game for this category instead, and I ended up going with The Binding of Isaac, which was one of the only rogue-like games I played as a kid, and I always really really loved it. The dark themes of the game never bothered me at all, and I always really loved the gameplay, especially all the random elements of it, such that no two runs of the game were exactly the same.

Day 21: (Gambling/Casino/Carnival Stages) | Casino Night Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog 2
Pretty easy choice for me for this particular category. Doesn't get much better than this for casino-sounding themes, and this was always one of my favorite zones from Sonic 2 as a kid.

Day 22: (Saturday Morning Cartoons)
A | Cartoon/Kids Show/Movie Licensed Game: Main Manu - Ghostbusters: The Video Game
B | Video Game-based Cartoon/Movie: Opening Theme - The Legend of Zelda Cartoon
Ghostbusters: The Video Game was a game I replayed multiple times as a kid, and it's easily the best movie licensed game in my opinion. The story is a direct continuation of the first two films, and it has the same lighthearted and fun feeling as those two movies, with a bit of genuine horror sprinkled in at some points for good measure, and the gameplay is the absolute best you could ask for from a Ghostbusters game, it's SUPER fun. Highly highly recommend playing the remastered version of this game if anyone hasn't played it, it's a real blast. As for the Zelda cartoon, I watched it quite a bit when I was a young kid, since it was the only real example of a show or movie based on the Zelda series. I've always wanted someone to make an honest attempt at a Zelda TV series or movie, even though I know Nintendo will probably never let that happen these days.

Day 23: (Free Space - Sandbox)
A | 3D: Wet Hands - Minecraft
B | 2D: Day - Terraria
I mean, what can you really say about Minecraft? If you were born around the same time as me, Minecraft was almost certainly a massive part of your childhood. The first sandbox game I ever played, and still to this day by far one of the best. Not much I can say about Minecraft that hasn't already been said, other than that it'll always hold such a special place in my heart. As for Terraria, well... pretty much everything I said about Minecraft applies to Terraria as well, but in 2D rather than 3D. As a game, I actually prefer Terraria over Minecraft, even though I first played Terraria after Minecraft. The soundtracks for both of these games are absolutely phenomenal in their own ways, and the games themselves are some of the best examples of sandbox games out there. Sandbox games played a very big part in my childhood, as they were ways for my super active imagination to just... go wild. Do whatever I wanted.
(2 Games Reused, 3 Remain)

Day 24: (Pinball Games) | Theme - 3D Pinball Space Cadet
This was the one and only pinball game I ever played as a kid, hahaha. My dad was always way better at it than I was.

Day 25: (Acapella/Vocals) | Secret Gardens - LittleBigPlanet 3
This is an acapella version of a song from the original LittleBigPlanet that I'm super nostalgic for. I never did play LBP 3, however this song itself means so much to me that I felt it only made sense to include it in this category, given that they included an acapella version of it in the third game.

Day 26: (Shmups/Shooters) | Tearing Up the Turnpike - Contra III: The Alien Wars
I always really loved Contra III as a kid, even more so than any of the other Contra games. I thought the gameplay was super super fun, the music really pumped you up, and I really loved the challenge the game had. Still sometimes go back to this game to have a bit of dumb fun every once in awhile.

Day 27: (Unsettling/Foreboding) | Cerberus - Castlevania: Dracula X
Dracula X was my first Castlevania game, and I still remember the first time I fought Cerberus, the first boss in the game. The flames in the burning village in the background had turned a pale green. At first I thought that was awesome, I didn't know green flames were a thing! But then I started listening to the music playing, and I realized that something was wrong. I kept on walking forward, knowing something was gonna happen, and then Cerberus screeched and jumped at me from out of nowhere. And... I got my ass handed to me of course. Like I said, first Castlevania game, and one of my first video games in general, hahaha. But I kept trying, and eventually I did beat him and progress further in to what I consider to be one of the most underrated Castlevania games.

Day 28: (Final Boss) | Ganon Battle - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Felt like this made the most sense to use, given that ALttP was the first Zelda game I remember playing, and it was definitely the first one I ever beat.
(3 Games Reused, 2 Remain)

Day 29: (Secret/Super Boss) | Fight Against Culex - Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
I thought for awhile about any secret bosses that were in any games I played as a kid, and the only one I could really think of was Culex from Mario RPG. I myself never actually fought Culex, but I had heard about him and seen gameplay of the fight against him, and I remember thinking how much harder he seemed compared to all the normal bosses. I dunno why I never actually fought him, I always remember wanting to.

Day 30: (Credits/Ending) | Ending Theme - The Legend of Zelda
Felt that this was the best way to close out this list. Any other choice just didn't feel right, y'know?

+

(Favorite VGMC Song) | Mount Vesuvius - DuckTales Remastered
I'll admit that FAVORITE is a bit of a strong word, I dunno if I could choose a single favorite out of all the fantastic songs that I was introduced to via these challenges, but Mount Vesuvius is most certainly up there for me. I went back to listen to this song several times after I first heard it way back in the first challenge, it was one of @rdrunner's picks. At the time I still hadn't played DuckTales, nor DuckTales Remastered, so this song was a brand new experience for me, and MAN is it just so damn good!

698250b3bb812bb8d34e51a852d99b39.png

And so ends yet another VGMC. Already looking forward to the next one! And I'll try to break my streak of promising to work on my Day 31 list, but then not actually doing it this time around, hahaha.

Probably should have done a shout out a day or two ago: @Gaia Gensouki@AstralSoul@koifish@ookii_risu  @TriHart@acromite53@Sumez@tigerwolf@nesmaster14 @Jeevan(its probably a no, but just in case)

wish I had more time to focus on this, thanks for the offer, it was definitely a good experience.  maybe next time as I've got a few rpgs set for my backlog along with n64 beat them all, maybe after knocking some of those out I can do one of these.

  • The title was changed to 31-Day Video Game Music Challenge 4 - Day 3

Man, I thought VGS was a goner!  I've been trying to access the site for like 2 weeks now to no avail.  Just randomly sought more info and saw a post stating I had to add /forums to the domain and the site would work. 🤯

With that out the way, I'm super excited for this thread!!!!

NESMASTER14's VGMC 31-Day Challenge List IV

Day 1 (Intro) - Demon Sword (NES) - Title Screen - This title screen always stood out to me, and I've yet to hear the NES channels pushed to these registers either haha.  Pretty intense.

Day 2 (Opening Stage) - Sonic Adventure 2 (DC) - Escape From the City - Getting my Sonic pick out early, but a classic.

Day 3 (Simulation) - Aqua World (Saturn) - Options - For when you want to turn on your hi-fi and watch fish.

Day 4 (Impressive) - Harmsing - Astyanax / Lord King (NES) Cover Arrangement This is a very unique and epic cover of an NES soundtrack,  both the video and the music.  It gets pretty wild midway and is a trip to listen/watch.  Tasteful and well-made.

Day 5 (Playstation) - Tsukiyo ni Saraba [10,000 Bullets] (PS2) - D.O.L.L - A little smoother/funkier jam from this jazzin' soundtrack.  Hard to pick one track from it, others are worth a listen as well.  One Note Blues is pretty jammin' with a breakbeat vibe and frenetic organs/sax.

Day 6 (Strange) - Po Pi Pa Pi - Mario Artist: Talent Studio (N64DD)
What puts it over the top for me is the unexpected telephone off-hook tone at 1:16.  So strange... Lol.

Day 7 (Computer) - Cannon Fodder (Amiga) - Intro

Day 8 (Bonus-Stage) - Touhou - Great Fairy Wars (PC) - Magus Night Extra Stage Boss - I don't follow anime much but I like a good shmup.  Finally tried a few recently and they were pretty fun.  I dug the music in some of the stages. Same song maybe higher quality (if you have YT Music subscription)

Day 9 (Same Game/Different) - My pick is a bit silly, but it's a difference.  They swapped the opening stage tracks around.

Day 10 (Nostalgic) - Sonic Spinball (Genesis) - Stage 1 - Fond memories of this game, and what a jammin' soundtrack!

Day 11 (Romhack)Chose two tracks for today, I really dig the melodies and composition.

Day 12 (Banjo NES/Country) - The Lone Ranger (NES) - Train Ride - Super short theme, don't miss it or forget your banjo.

Day 13 (Remake) - Sonic Generations - File Select (PS3) [Sonic 3 & Knuckles (GEN) File Select music remake)] -

Day 14 (Dungeon) - Legend of Zelda (NES) - Dungeon Theme -  A mysterious piece full of wonder as you venture through the perilous dungeons.  What more to say other than classic.

Day 15 (Boss) - Werewolf The Last Warrior (NES) - Battle Theme - A bit odd to have a reggae style beat for a battle theme but I dig it

Day 16 (Retro) -

Day 17 (Racing) - Wave Race (N64) - Title Theme - Didn't own this back in the day but played it and I appreciate the tunes more now.  Reminds me of Casiopiea haha.

Day 18 (Short) - Galaga (Arcade) - Game Start - Iconic tune and transports me to the arcade with a pocket full of quarters and a joystick ready to shoot.

Day 19 (Name Entry) - San Francisco Rush (N64) - Name Entry Screen - Wh-wh-wh-what's yo' name?

Day 20 (Homebrew) - The Rise of Amondus (NES) - Elderwood - Blast beats on NES🤘

Day 21 (Gambling) - Peek a Boo Poker (NES, *Adult, NSFW*) - Title Theme - Panesian game, so don't expect much, but I always thought it had a nice little melody.

Day 22 (Cartoon/Movie Based) -

Day 23 (Free Day) - Gone Away (MSX cover of Offspring) by Meits (1997) - Something about this rather obscure MSX rendition of this 90s song hits me with a nostalgic bittersweet feeling.

Day 24 (Pinball) - Epic Pinball (DOS) - Intro Theme - Early 90s tracker music with driving bass and kicks, reverb snares and tasteful synth , a classic video pinball DOS game.

Day 25 (Vocals) - Vandal Hearts (PS1) - Intro

Day 26 (Shooters) - Cho Ren Sha 68K (X68000, Windows PC) - We Love the E.A.R.T.H (Name Entry) - I remember playing this in the mid 2000s when it got ported to Windows and was really impressed with it.  Solid oldschool indie shmup from 1995 in the vein of PC Engine shooters. There's also this arranged track called Fight To Your Happiness from the official soundtrack which has vocals.  It doesn't really fit with the game but is kinda awesome because of that.

Day 27 (Unsettling) - Taboo: The Sixth Sense (NES) - Prologue - I wouldn't consider this horror but it definitely gives a very unsettling vibe.

Day 28 (Final Boss) - Hyper Wars (PC Engine CD) - Battle Theme 7  - Welp, winding down the list with a ROMPING heavy metal PC engine CD soundtrack.  That cover art! If I heard this track when I got to the end of a game, I'd probably need a minute to take it all in, lol.

Day 29 (Hidden Boss) - Gimmick (NES) - Final Boss Part 2 - I've beaten Gimmick but didn't get the secret items to unlock the final "good ending" boss fight.

Day 30 (Ending & Favorite VGMC Tune) -

To avoid confusion: you actually have to add an "s" to the end of the videogamesage domain name to access the site right now. A temporary fix for an annoying problem.
