Moonwalker – I could have sworn Thriller was in the game?  Alternate version?

It kind of is. In the first revision of the game (so probably a mistake), they left in a couple clips of the song that play when using special attacks. But the version I linked was meant to be a full level theme.

See https://tcrf.net/Michael_Jackson's_Moonwalker_(Genesis) for more details

Day 31 - Lunatic (at least 1 song pick per participant) Best of "31-Day VGMC 3" List:

Day 01: [2005] Sticky Balls - Intro [GZM] acromite53

Gizmondo has redeeming qualities? Silly but great tune.

Day 02: [1991] Turrican II - Title Theme [AMI] acromite53

Christopher Hülsbeck tunes tend to have this epic 80s-90s TV theme quality to them which I like.

Day 03: [1994] Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - File Select [GEN] nesmaster14

Just jamming in the tropics with Sonic, Tails and Knuckles.

Day 04: [2003] Sword of Mana - Seeking the Holy Sword [GBA] AstralSoul

Very heroic theme, the backing flutes are kind of a miss for me though.

Day 05: [2007] Contra 4 - Stage 1: Jungle [DS] rdrunner

Virt is god, nuff said!

Day 06: [1990] Mission Impossible - Moscow [NES] PII

Certified Konami style with punchy groove and some melody sprinkled in there.

Day 07: [2010] Castlevania: Harmony of Despair - Ebony Wings [X360] ZeldaFreak

This is some good chuggin' and epic melodies lad.

Day 08: [1996] Logical Journey of the Zoombinis - Zoombiniville [PC] 0xDEAFC0DE

Mysterious ambiance to boot.

Day 09: [2010] Deadly Premonition - Greenvale [X360] Sumez

I fricking love Twin Peaks. This imitates the show's music style perfectly, love the huge nods to Laura's theme.

Day 10: [1993] Socket - Antiquity [GEN] acromite53

It's bouncy and happy tune but the melody lines have this melancholic timbre that brings it all together in a sublime way.

Day 11: [1995] Waterworld - Diving [SNES] acromite53

One of the most fitting and chill underwater tunes I've heard.

Day 12: [1990] Supremacy - Title Theme [C64] 0xDEAFC0DE

Now I understand where the band Machinae Supremacy came from haha. I really like them.

Day 13: [XXXX] HeroQuest - Title Theme [NES] AverageOliver98

Really SID-inspired style when the song gets going.

Day 14: [2010] Xenoblade Chronicles - Agniratha, Mechonis Capital (Night) [WII] koifish

Beautiful beyond belief. Makes me tear up on sound alone.

Day 15: [2020] No Straight Roads - vs. SAYU [PS4] Aguy

Cool high energy EDM.

Day 16: [1994] Final Fantasy VI - Kefka [SNES] tigerwolf

Mischievous staccato notes shift into triumphant melodies. Planning on world domination are ye?

Day 17: [1991] Super Spy Hunter - Band Cover by Harmsing [NES] nesmaster14

These guys bring the FUNKY JAZZ!

Day 18: [1998] F-Zero X - Devil's call in your heart (Devil's Forest) [N64] AstralSoul

Fervent tremolos and drumming rarely heard in video game soundtracks.

Day 19: [2013] Rad Raygun - Berlin [X360] acromite53

This song has a really tight beat, you just have to bop your head. Slap bass parts for good measure.

Day 20: [1995] Ristar - Round 5-2 - Ice Scream [GEN] acromite53

Love the brightly bubbling notes that occasionally have that harder edge to fit the icy theme.

Day 21: [1992] Spider-Man / X-Men: Arcade's Revenge - Cyclops [SNES] rdrunner

In true Follin manner this song is a long epic trip with twists and turns.

Day 22: [1994] Biker Mice From Mars - City [SNES] / [1982] Judas Priest - Riding on the Wind fox

Judas Priest is one of the greats of Metal music, fitting for riding motorbikes. Loved the show as a kid.

Day 23: [2018] Them's Fightin' Herds - Alpake Highlands (Paprika) [PC] fox

Like a mix of humppa, klezmer and electronic shenanigans. Bomb.

Day 24: [1993] Shining Force II - Town Theme [GEN] tigerwolf

My favorite Genesis game and definitely my favorite town theme in games. Just so cheerful.

Day 25: [1995] Eek! The Cat - Opening Movie (JP Version) Remix by SiIvaGunner [SNES] acromite53

Mother!!! Super smooth combo.

Day 26: [2011] Catherine - Track 9 [PS3] / [1831] Chopin - Étude Op. 10, No. 12 AstralSoul

Chopin is one of my favorite composers for piano, not quite on the level of Liszt though.

Day 27: [1990] Thunder Force AC - Stage 4 [ARC] AverageOliver98

Love the song but I used to know it as "Truth" on the SNES Thunder Spirits soundtrack, more smooth this time around.

Day 28: [2007] Super Paper Mario - Castle Bleck [WII] AverageOliver98

Super cool and quirky soundscape.

Day 29: [1998] Resident Evil 2 - Final Boss [PS1] fox

You can feel the urgency and danger in this song.

Day 30: [1987] Goonies II - Ending Theme [NES] fox

Delightful and concise composition that you want to listen to again as soon as it ends.

Day 31: Favorite Selections from Every Participant

(trying it the other way this time!)

@AverageOliver98

Day 1: Zero Wing, Introduction (Part 1) - Ignoring the infamous content of this scene, the music is good too!

Day 15: Naval Ops: Commander, Wirbelwind Theme - Totally was not expecting this.  Not much into war sims but suddenly interested.

Day 16: Earthbound, Pokey Means Business - His fight is nothing compared to Giygas, but Pokey's song kicks some serious behind!

Day 24: Mega Man: The Wily Wars, Wily Tower 1 - Really wanted this game and still annoyed that we never got it stateside.

Day 29: Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Zero Two - Never played much Kirby, but his music is always great.

*And a huge thanks for putting together this challenge together again.  Loved reading all the comics as well!

fox
Day 1: Soul Blade, Intro
Day 3: 3rd Strike, Character Select
Day 17: Sega Genesis Mini, Menu
Day 19: Curse of the Moon 2, Chains of Fire
Day 24: Guardian Heroes, Jazzy Sabotage

*Never knew the rap from 3rd Strike actually had verses.  Only the refrain plays during the actual game menu.

Sumez
Day 6: Pink Sweets, Tiger Bianca
Day 7: Thunder Cross 2, Heavy Metal Bomber (Stage 3)

*Out of curiosity, what don't you like about the mechanics in Pink Sweets?  I checked a video and saw a bunch of ways to cancel bullets, which I still find odd whenever I see them in such games.

Aguy
Day 1: Batman, Prologue
Day 4: WonderBoy: The Dragon's Trap, The Last Dungeon
Day 7: John Madden Football, Title
Day 10: Spanky's Quest, Tower 5
Day 15: No Straight Roads, Sayu

*Terribly sorry for your loss.  Hope everything is ok.  For what it's worth, I was really impressed by No Straight Roads.

ZeldaFreak
Day 6: Haunted Castle, Cross Your Heart
Day 7: Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, Ebony Wings
Day 10: Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Hail from the Past
Day 13: Castlevania: The Adventure Rebirth, Battle of the Holy
Day 24: Castlevania Bloodlines, Beginning

*When someone puts 5 Castlevania tunes in one of these lists, it was bound to happen.  I like other stuff from the list as well (DKC2 rocks!), but just had to do it.

nesmaster14
Day 4: Castlevania Bloodlines, Iron Blue Intention
Day 5: Sword Master, Stage 1, Forest
Day 12: The Sword of Lxsor
Day 17: Super Spy Hunter, by Harmsing
Day 29: Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi, Final Boss

*Really loved that band playing Super Spy Hunter.  Nice pick!

sp1nz
Day 2: Donald in Maui Mallard, Title
Day 4: Gauntlet 4, Sortie
Day 22: Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Ice Cap Zone
Day 25: Kirby Super Star, Float Islands Remix
Day 27: Super R-Type, Solo Sortie

*Super R-Type is one of my favorite tracks and I think you picked the best tune from it!

AstralSoul
Day 4: Sword of Mana, Seeking the Holy Sword
Day 17: Banjo-Kazooie, Medley
Day 21: Plok, Akrillic
Day 23: Extreme-G, Track 1
Day 27: Star Fox, Meteor

*Never heard of Extreme-G before this challenge.  Sounds intense!

acromite53
Day 2: Turrican 2, Title
Day 12: Superman, Stage 5
Day 16: Adventures of Batman and Robin
Day 21: Target: Renegade, Level 1
Day 23: Sega Touring Car Championship, Don't Drop Me

*Loved seeing a Superman game make the list.  I still only really like the arcade game, but the Genesis one has the better music.

tigerwolf
Day 7: Romancing Saga, Beat Them Up!
Day 10: Paperboy, Main Theme
Day 15: Actraiser, The Beast Appears
Day 19: Shovel Knight, Strike the Earth
Day 29: Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, In the Final DX

*Had to give props to arcade Paperboy.  Every fan of the NES version needs to hear this.

0xDEAFC0DE
Day 3: Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Menu
Day 5: The Messenger, Bamboo Boogaloo
Day 10: Rygar, Mt. Primeval Cave
Day 12: Supremacy
Day 15: Undertale, Dummy!

*Probably goes without saying, but pretty sure the Smash series has the best menu selection music of all time (among its other many accolades).

PII
Day 1: Castlevania Bloodlines, A Vision of Dark Secrets
Day 3: Cool World, Stage Select
Day 6: Mission Impossible, Moscow
Day 10: Back to the Future, The Power of Love x4
Day 17: 16-Bit Wave

*Don't give up on Mission Impossible.  It really is a fun game once you figure out how to play it.  Killer soundtrack too!

koi fish
Day 4: Meteos, Main Theme
Day 23: Sound Voltex 2, Brain Power
Day 24: Gain Ground, Dark Ages
Day 27: Mario Party 2, Space Land
Day 29: Elite Beat Agents, Jumpin' Jack Flash

*Love the ending of Elite Beat Agents.  Way more dramatic than you'd expect from a game this light-hearted.

BONUS: Popular Picks!
Cave Story, Title
Cyber Shadow, Mekacity Ruins
Final Fantasy 6, Intro
Hero Quest, Title
Puyo Puyo, Final of Puyo Puyo

*Always fun when multiple people list the same tunes!  Really looking forward to playing Cyber Shadow.  Hero Quest sounds fun too...oh wait. 😞

  • The title was changed to 31-Day Video Game Music Challenge 3 - Day 31-2

31

DAY 1)   Gley Lancer (Mega Drive) - Introduction    [nesmaster14]   Sounds/looks like another great deemed unfit for North Americans.  I'd give a penny to have been a fly on the wall in the boardroom for that decision...

Flashback: The Quest for Identity (SNES)   [rdrunner]   ...like a lost track from Chrono Trigger 2300 A.D.

DAY 2)   [Amiga] [1991] Turrican II - Title Theme   [acromite53]

BallBlazer (Atari 800)   [rdrunner]    {gettin the most from the least here, very impressive}

Cave Story+ - Title Screen   [AstralSoul]

Too many title screen goodies = had to add a bronze medal lol.

DAY 3)   Thunder Force III - Beyond the Peace    [AverageOliver98]

Shatterhand    [Sumez]

Menu [Ultimate] - Super Smash Bros. Ultimate    [0xDEAFC0DE]    {makes me feel like I'm outrunning the bad guy in 70's Bond Movie = def. a way I like to feel}

DAY 4)    Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap: The Last Dungeon [NSW/PS4/X1]    [Aguy]
{Absolutely GAW-JISS]

Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis) - Iron Blue Intention    [nesmaster14]

DAY 5)    Jungle - Terraria    [ZeldaFreak]    {Wow, unique, intriguing; really makes me want to hear where the music is going to go}

Chrono Trigger - Secret of the Forest    [AstralSoul]

Secret of Mana, "What the Forest Taught Me" (Hiroko Kikuta)    [tigerwolf]    {haven't heard this one since it's heyday; used to listen to it a lot back then}

DAY 6) [spn1z]  [2000] Sheep - Chillin Fields [PS1]   -   {Awesome, sounds like Portishead.}

[acromite53] -  [SNES] [1991] Super R-Type - National Anthem of Bydo Empire

[fox] - Day 6: Toxic Crusaders - Tromaville Highway

So, for those of you who have already completed their Day 31 lists, feel free to take a listen to my list to see if there's any additions/alterations you'd like to make 🙂 I'll get to work on mine in the coming days.

Thanks for the fun, folks! This was a great diversion from work and life stresses. I do love a good mixtape, and you all picked some awesome tracks.

Here's my slightly-belated "best of" mix for the final day. I picked one track from each person's playlist that jumped out at me the most:

  1. AverageOliver98 - Hollow Knight, “Main Theme”
  2. fox - Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, “The Forest Poachers”
  3. Sumez - Sexy Parodius, “Vic Viper & Lord British’s Theme”
  4. Aguy - SNES Classic Menu
  5. ZeldaFreak - Final Fantasy VI, “Dancing Mad” (aka Mozart - Dies Irae)
  6. nesmaster14 - Shatter Hand, “Final Area"
  7. sp1nz - Dragon Warrior Monsters, “Never-Ending Journey”
  8. AstralSoul - Chrono Trigger, “Secret of the Forest”
  9. rdrunner - Final Fantasy Legend 2, "Heroic Tune"
  10. acromite53 - Sesame Street 1-2-3, “Ernie’s Magic Shapes"
  11. 0xDEAFC0DE - The Messenger, “Bamboo Boogaloo II (Bamboo Creek”)
  12. PII - Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu, “Levels 1-4, 1-5, 1-6, 5-3 & 5-5”
  13. koifish - Wario’s Woods, “Practice Mode”

And here is a playlist with all my selections (including the ones above):

Looking forward to the next one!

Wasn't planned! When playing Cyber Shadow the Mekacity Ruins seemed like a standout track on an already good soundtrack.  Guess I wasn't the only one who thought so.  Hope you enjoy the game.

Day 6 - Chrono Trigger - Corridors of Time

Looking forward to people reply bombing this one (¬‿¬)

I'm trying to decide whether to politely ask for an explanation or just have a crate containing one slightly peeved Black Tyranno shipped to your front door.

  • The title was changed to 31-Day Video Game Music Challenge 3 - Day ?
  • 6 months later...

I feel so bad about dropping out of the last challenge midway, especially after @AverageOliver98 prepared all those cool daily pictures! I actually had tracks prepared and written out for almost every day, but some things came up IRL that ended up stressing me out, and I couldn't really keep up with VGS in that period. 😞

I'm hoping to remedy that this January. Looking forward to participating again.
