  1. Loose carts, display? pfft, I just make toppling dominoes.
  2. nesmaster14

    bats

Ninja Gaiden birds come to mind too
  3. This awesome cover of Astyanax for NES. It's a fun listen and watch, the video editing and musical composition is quite dynamic, even a bit surreal at times ha.
  4. Castlevania III comes to mind. Love the game, but a few levels I remember spending like hours on. Stage 7 with the falling blocks, gets my blood boiling just thinking about it hah.
  5. Been digging the new Gojira album. On the track Sphinx right now.
  6. I'd rather it be extra terrestrials versus what I think it may be (bezos satellites) Edit* or musk, confused billionaires for a second.
  7. **EDIT** - Doh. Just noticed I think I misread the rules about the final boss. So if I'm correct, the final boss is stage 6? I think I mistook it for Stage 12. I got to this boss but wasn't sure how to defeat it and think I got like 10k while shooting at it but didn't beat it anyway. I'll see if I can try again and make sure to use only missiles. ***Disregard/misread ***Finally got a chance to play a bit. Not sure if I have time for another, but always forget how fun/strategic this little shmup is. 134,320
  8. Man, that's kinda sad to see from an environmental standpoint. Awesome you fished it out though! Here's hoping you can get some gameplay out of it, if nothing else it has a story to tell at least. I think you'd deserve a VGS Rescuer badge especially if you got it to bonk again.
  9. For starters I'd recommend: Super Bat Puncher Battle Kid Larry and the Long Look for a Luscious Lover (Leisure Suit Larry NES port) Blade Buster Streemerz The Mad Wizard (by Sly Dog Studios) Nomolos: Storming the Catsle Micro Mages (by the same guy who made Super Bat Puncher)
  10. What an epic journey it's been. Special thanks to @AverageOliver98 for creating this awesome series and event out of sharing game music. The comic/narrative banners were super creative and I thoroughly enjoyed looking what you had in store for each day. I had some great laughs, a few gasps, some ???'s, and overall a great time. Bravo, sir! Now, I look forward to checking out more tunes everyone's shared for the Day 31 list. Lots of great stuff, hope folks who haven't had a chance to participate yet may get to in the future. Cheers all NESMASTER14's Selections from VGMC #3: AverageOliver98 - Day 6 (Music You Like, Game You Don't): Odallus: The Dark Call - Aqueducts 1 - 2015 Day 7 (Rock): Sonic Adventure 2 - That's The Way I Like It (Metal Harbor) - 2001 Day 28 (Final Area): Super Paper Mario - Castle Bleck - 2007 fox - Day 1: Soul Blade Intro - I dig the rockin' 80s/90s anime intro with vocals vibe, nice! Day 23: Them's Fightin' Herds - Alpake Highlands (Paprika) Day 24: Guardian Heroes - Jazzy Sabotage Sumez - Day 1 (intro): Final Fantasy VI - Opening - It's such a beautiful theme, I don't blame ya. Day 2 (title screen): Yoku's Island Express - Yoku Taidua and the Village Day 5 (forest): Super Mario RPG - Beware the Forest's Mushrooms - Really distinct musical style, I'd like to check out more of her music now. Aguy - Day 9 (Games After 2010) - River City Girls: Bully [PS4/X1/NSW] - I've been hoping modern games would start to embrace vocals again, done right like this, Sonic R, Daytona USA, it's refreshing. Day 15 (Boss) - No Straight Roads: Sayu [PS4, X1, NSW] - I dig this too and the use of vocals, thanks for sharing these. Day 10 (Underrated) - Spanky's Quest: Tower 5 [GB] - Haven't heard this Natsume tune before, nice one! ZeldaFreak - Day 3: (Menu/Stage Select) | Journey to Chaos - Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge Day 7: (Rock) | Ebony Wings - Castlevania: Harmony of Despair - That's a great jam, thanks! Day 4: (Heroic) - Escape from the Floating Continent - Owlboy sp1nz - Day 06: [2000] Sheep - Chillin Fields [PS1] - Boppin' my head to this one! Day 08: [2007] My Word Coach - Menu [DS] - Wow, that's a nice track. In a word game, of all places. Day 12: [2008] Suikoden Tierkreis - The People of the Sea [DS] AtralSoul - Day 1 - Intro/Prologue - Monster Party - Prologue - Great melody and slightly juxtaposed with the game's theme, love it. Day 2 - Title Screen - Cave Story+ - Title Screen - Nice groove! Day 18 - Music that gets you pumped - F-Zero X - Devil's Forest - Intense track, I dig the little vocals too! rdrunner - Day 8 Educational: M.U.L.E. (Atari 800) - Lots of style I dig it. Too many folks overlook the Atari 800 it seems. Day 11 Sea/Air: Raskulls (X360), Pirats 'Til We Die (Credits) Day 24 Sega: Shinobi 3: Return of the Ninja Master (Genesis), Shinobi Walk - Boy, what a jam, hits all the right Sega notes. acromite53 - Day 2: title [Amiga] [1991] Turrican II - Title Theme - Chris Huelsbeck made some great tunes. Day 9: since 2010 [Wii U] [2015] Yoshi's Wooly World - Wonderful World of Wool 6 - Nice upbeat tune, and I dig the bass guitar in it. Day 10: underrated [Genesis] [1993] Socket - Antiquity - Wow, thanks for sharing this one. I'll have to check out more Vic Tokai Genesis stuff now. tigerwolf - Day 15: Actraiser, "The Beast Appears" (Yuzo Koshiro) - Yuzo Koshiro is so epic, not only can he jam but make an intense orchestration too. Haven't heard this one before, thanks. Day 22: Aerobiz Supersonic, "Tears in Heaven" "North America" - I remember hearing this track years ago and its connection but forgot about it until now. I laughed out loud reading your description of it, pretty spot on haha. Romancing SaGa 3, "Last Battle" (Kenji Ito) - Jammin' metal track! 0xDEAFC0DE - Day 8 (Educational): Zoombiniville - Logical Journey of the Zoombinis - This takes me back to playing old DOS/PC games in the 90s, though I don't even recall playing this. Nice one. Day 18 (Pump-up): Bicycle Training / Warming Up with Doc - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! - Classic NES tune! Day 22 (Samples/Inspired By/Sounds Similar): Star Dust - Lazy Jones (C64) - It's interesting how many composers in that era lifted from popular music. Haven't heard that one though. One that always cracked me up was Up, Up and Away (C64/Hubbard) -- Shamelessly (but fittingly) from the 5th Dimension song of the same name, ha. PII - Day 12 (Never Played): Castlevania Chronicles[X68000 / PS1] - The X68000 Castlevania is underrated in my opinion, and has some nice jams. Day 16 (Evil): Cauldron II [C64] - Opening - Cool to see this game mentioned! I enjoyed this one. Another one I'd recommend with a spooky vibe is Forbidden Forest (C64) Day 6 (Dislike Game/Like Music): Mission Impossible [NES] - Moscow - Wow, never heard this one before, really nice jam. koifish - Day 5 - Wario's Woods - Practice Day 11 - Uncharted Waters - Aboard in the Temperate Area Day 12 - Mario Hoops 3-on-3 - Sherbet Land (CD Version) -Dig it! Another nice vocal track I've never heard, reminds me of Sonic R. Blown away once again, kudos everyone for so much great tunes!!
  11. I'm still very much learning, but here's one I just created: Pink Horizon, 16x4
  12. I still need to get the fishing rod, but it's been on my to-play list for awhile. It'd be nice if the gameplay was as good/fun as the soundtrack
  13. Cool stuff! Those landscapes are impressive and I really like the gradient on the desert one. I don't consider myself a graphic artist, but I've always been drawn to pixel art, specifically making the most within limited resolution/palette/hardware. I remember now one of my blogs needed a favicon and had a limit of like 16x16. This is what I came up with like 6 years ago: 16x16 by nesmaster14 It's not palette/hardware restricted pixel art of course, but I think even making pixel art in the modern sense (limiting resolution with more palette) has plenty of merit and craft to it. I enjoyed making it and feel inspired now to try it again. Cheers!
  14. Wow that was quite the blow, I guess don't underestimate sumez' rainbow islands power.
  15. Oh boy! What's strange though is my choice for today was Erik The Viking (nes, unreleased) Neil Baldwin is one of my favorite composers, actually had his music going in another tab, this freaked me out, weird!!!! hahah
  16. These banners are so awesome! Love the pixel rendition of my avatar
  17. Custom Mode Day 1 (Intro) - Gley Lancer (Mega Drive) - Introduction - Gets you ready for the game, I really love the part around 1:25 when it starts picking up and fully kicks in at 1:45. Best with good headphones/speakers and some bass. Day 2 (Title) - Jill of the Jungle (DOS) - Title Screen - Something about the music from these early DOS games, especially by Epic Megagames, so much style haha. Day 3 (Menu) - Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Genesis) - File Select - Getting my Sonic 3 track out early I guess, but always has a spot. I don't think there's a track I don't love from this game. Day 4 (Heroic) - Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis) - Iron Blue Intention - Great overall Genesis track, I feel a sense of urgency to defeat Dracula when I hear this so it must be heroic. Day 5 (Forest) - Sword Master (NES) - Stage 1 - Forest Day 6 (Like Music/Dislike Game) - All New World of Lemmings (Amiga) - World #2 Day 7 (Rock) - Gran Turismo 2 (PS1) - Blowing Away - Wanted to find something more traditionally rock here instead of overly metal (which I love but figured I'd switch it up a bit). Day 8 (Educational) - Word Rescue (DOS, 1992) - Title/Level 1 - This track is almost too swanky for its own good. And that little syncopation near 1:10, *whew!* Day 9 (Since 2010) - You mean games existed past 2010??? I must be in the Twilight Zone... Ok fine. Sonic Generations (Multiplatform, 2011) - Collection Room [Door Into Summer] - Any song from this soundtrack is solid, but how about a nod to Knuckles' Chaotix. Day 10 (Underrated) - The Rise of Amondus - Elderwood (NES homebrew by Sly Dog Studios, 2015) - Sly Dog Studios pushing boundaries again, this time bringing blast beats/tremolo picking to NES music, so cool haha. @ 1:35 Day 11 (Sky) - Daytona USA (Sega Saturn) - Sky High - I always thought the title theme was the main attraction, but this track really shines. These composers on Sega Saturn made great use of the technology, and the voices of Mitsuyoshi and TJ Davis elevated it. Day 12 (Never Played) - The Sword of Lxsor (X68000) - Not even sure if this game exists, tried finding box art or gameplay images (translated title to japanese as well) to no avail, but it sure does sound great. Day 13 (Unused) - Mr. Gimmick! (NES) - Strange Memories of Death - Don't think I've used a Gimmick song yet. It's a wonder this song was so hidden/unused, but glad we get to hear it. Day 14 (Ambient) - Erik The Viking (NES, Unreleased) - Peace In The Harbor - I remember when this track was released back in 2009/10 on Neil's blog. I've always enjoyed his creative use of the 2A03, like incorporating bird sounds or creature chirps into an immersive chiptune atmosphere. Day 15 (Boss) - Revival Xanadu (PC-98) - Gros Monstre - Killer track, the intro feels like you've approached the gross monster, then the track really kicks in and it's time to kick its arse! Day 16 (Evil) - Castlevania III (NES) - Nightmare - That ominous triangle wave note, pressing through the entire song, dread! Awesome atmosphere. Day 17 (Medley) - Super Spy Hunter (NES) - By Harmsing - One of my favorite VGM cover/medley videos, I still think this guy's channel deserves way more views. This one combines tracks from the entire game into one solid jam! Day 18 (Pumped) - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 (PS1) - Superman (by Goldfinger) Okay this probably stretching for this VGM list, but to me this song is intertwined with the game's soundtrack. Day 19 (Modern Retro) - Alwa's Legacy (Steam, 2020) - Town of Westwood - Actually never played this one, but has music by one of my favorite NES composers, Rushjet1. This is a modern Steam game, but composed with 2A03+VRC6 NES hardware. Day 20 (Snow) - Final Fantasy III (SNES) - Snowy Field - Nobuo Uematsu, what more to say. Day 21 (Follin) - Ghouls 'n' Ghosts (C64) - Title -The soundscapes he creates with those 3 channels. His prog-rock tunes are great too, but something about his atmospheric/experimental work that really captivates me. Day 22 (Samples) - Warhawk (C64) - Title [Rob Hubbard] ---> John Keating - The Unknown Planet (1972) Day 23 (Chaotic) - Metal Slader Glory (FC) - Bottom Floor - This game is pretty epic in scale, there's incidental music throughout the entire game, somewhat novel for NES. This part has a neat droning PCM sample underneath that adds to the feeling of massive rampant machinery/chaos. Day 24 (Sega) - Sega Bass Fishing (Dreamcast) - Huge Fish Music - This game has no business having this intense metal track, yet it does. Long live Sega. Day 25 (Silva Gunner) - Hebereke! Ufouria (NES) - Title [Silva Gunner, umm "Remix"] - Just discovered this person's channel and went through a bunch. This one's pretty great haha. Day 26 (Classical) - Tetra Star: The Fighter (FC) - Title Theme / 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky - This whole soundtrack is classical music. The use of real orchestra hits/timpani samples/etc makes it pretty epic on NES. Day 27 (Space) - Astro Warrior (SMS) - Asteroid Zone Day 28 (Final Area) - Shatterhand (NES) - Final Area - Got to give at least one Natsume jam, so many greats. Day 29 (Final Boss) - Doki! Doki! Yuuenchi (FC) - Final Boss - Pretty frantic and nicely composed final boss theme. I'm pretty sure this is by the same composer who did the final boss theme for Recca. Day 30 (Credits) - The Typing of the Dead (Dreamcast) - Ending Theme
  18. 84,800 Just got another run in, here's my best so far. Pretty fun/immersive game and feels overall well-made. I think I might try to beat it outside the contest. So earlier in the week I thought my batteries were bad (it's been a long time since I've fired up the ol' VB), but then noticed it started having display issues. Ordered a gamebit and took it apart. Seemed the ribbon cable got nudged. Luckily, was able to fix it by 3d printing a bracket! (white piece in picture) Rescued virtual boy, now I just need to improve my game lol.
  19. I think it's hard to go wrong with a Pi 3B+. I have a bunch of them, and all the others (I use them outside of gaming as well) It's easy to setup as it has multiple USB ports, wired ethernet and Wi-Fi. it'll smoothly run all the 8/16-bit classics, arcade gaming to the mid 90s or so, and PS1 (PS1 even ran fine on Pi 2's). For whatever reason N64 emulation on Pi is still catching up a bit. I think the Pi 4 will handle it, but I don't dabble in N64 much myself. I mainly use my Pi setups for arcade gaming /MAME and PC Engine CD. The downside of the Mister is most arcade machines aren't included yet, but are being worked on. A few other tidbits: If you want to play on a CRT, you can get composite output on most Pi's via the TRS 3.5mm port. You just need the right cable (readily available). With a cheap HDMI-Component adapter (no lag) you can even play RGB/Component through CRT as well. I tried it last October and it looked incredible. I used my RetroPie mainly for arcade gaming and PC Engine CD. Of course, if you wanna just play on HDMI, it's all their built-in ready to go. Pi 4 requires USB C power supply and you'll need a micro HDMI cable or adapter, but it'll run N64 and PSP a bit better. Pi Zero W will definitely run the 8/16 bit classics, it just doesn't have full-size USB ports built-in so you'll need a micro-usb to full size adapter and also a Mini HDMI cable or adapter.
  20. This one is a novel "turbo" peripheral for NES. It's all mechanical/gear driven. You insert a controller and roll the unit like a toy car which rotates the gears and quickly taps the buttons. Have had this for years, such an odd accessory but always a fun conversation piece.
