  1. 81,920 Just casual play. Annoyed that I didn’t actually finish the game.
  2. Today I am covering a game that I was very excited to try out and see what it was about. I read about and saw pictures of The Magic of Scheherazade in old gaming magazines I had growing up. It seemed interesting but the game never crossed my path so I never got to try it out. I was expecting the game to be somewhat like a Zelda clone, and I guess in some ways that's true. The game definitely has more to it than meets the eye. Put it all together and this is a pretty neat NES game that often flies under the radar. This time I also recorded my first true longplay for YouTube, clocking in at 10 hours. My longest video before this was around 2 1/2 hours. It might be something to check out if you are stuck and bored at home! Full Review: http://takeontheneslibrary.com/finished/145-the-magic-of-scheherazade/
  3. My game picker says I need to play Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego? next, so yeah guess I'm starting that one soon...
  4. Wheel of Fortune has become one of the longest running game shows of all time that is still incredibly popular. You can find it on TV at its normal timeslot like clockwork. It's nice to have a least a little stability in our lives! It was popular enough during the NES lifespan that there were four different Wheel of Fortune games. Most of them don't distinguish themselves in any meaningful way, but since this is the first one in the series and first one I've played for this project, this game gets a normal sized blog post. 5. I'm at Level 52/120 in QBillion. Gonna be chipping away at it for awhile but I expected to finish it sometime this year.
  6. Snake Rattle N Roll is a game that intrigued me from the beginning. I randomly bought a copy of the game knowing that it was something fun. I have a sort of fondness for isometric games, such as Solstice, Equinox, and Super Mario RPG. Before real 3D rendering, especially on console, this was the best we got for these kinds of games. These games do suffer from perspective issues and no depth perception, but under the right conditions they can be fun. I had a really good time with Snake Rattle N Roll though it is pretty tough and made me sweat a little. Full Review: #143 - Snake Rattle N Roll
  7. This is my first time promoting one on these on VGS! This was a long, time consuming thing to put together, but I like how these turn out in the end. I had the idea at the start of this project to do an awards show type of post where I go over every game played in the prior year and assign them to a bunch of categories. It's a fun way to go back over some neat (and sometimes frustrating) things that happen as sort of a "best of" of the year. These articles of mine get bigger and bigger every year, and indeed this one is the longest one yet. Perfect for a Friday afternoon (or whenever)! Here's my 2019 Year In Review: http://takeontheneslibrary.com/misc/2019-year-in-review/
  8. I think you've got it right. I definitely remember some tight jumps when you have to land on the edge of a block that is trying to slide you backward, then jump right away to keep from falling off. The timing is pretty tight in some cases but I was able to manage.
  9. Equinox is great! I beat it a few years ago for the first time, no turbo. I don't really remember that part with the columns but I know conveyor blocks are all over the place in that game, usually placed to catch you by surprise. I take pride in beating games without enhancements like turbo, even it it makes things painful with heavy mashing or what have you. Ghostbusters on NES is sure to put me to the test though when the time comes. I seem to remember beating that game as a kid without any turbo. I have to imagine I would fare better today.
  10. This is the next game for my blog. At least I know better on what to prepare for!
  11. Power Soukoban is a really fun game, excellent choice. There is also the more "vanilla" Super Sokoban. My favorite Super Famicom puzzler is Little Magic. It's a single screen puzzle game where you blow bubbles around. It's not really like Adventures of Lolo but it has that same vibe. Umihara Kawase is really fun, cute, and tough as nails.
  12. I'm gonna give QBillion a shot. Now that the contest is over I feel like starting up something on GB.
  13. I'll chime in with my own thanks to Red. It was a fun contest and nice to compete again. This filled my need to do a contest for awhile. Happy to be on break now!
  14. There is precedent for this ... I played through and reviewed Battle Kid a few years back. Eventually there will be more and I have plenty of candidates on hand.
  15. I am very guilty of buying homebrews and not playing them. Most of them I have played at least a little bit, some I have beaten to completion, and some I haven't even tried yet. It's shameful, I agree.
  16. I'm not sure there's a lot I can add to the conversation about Metal Gear. The series was one that took all of video games by storm during the PS1/PS2 era, and here I was way on the outside. I have always been a Nintendo kid, happy to play Marios and Zeldas forever, and so I was never even really interested in Metal Gear Solid. I did eventually write my wrongs for at least the first three games in the series, and though I look back on that experience fondly, I did struggle through the games and probably forced myself through some parts. I knew about Metal Gear on NES but didn't really care to try it. Now I'm righting another wrong by beating NES Metal Gear. It is rough around the edges and has some issues, but I did enjoy my time with it. Review: #142 - Metal Gear
  17. 77,550 Pretty close to beating the game I think. Very interesting game! I think I would have beaten it on the next try.
  18. It's the end of January, which means it will soon be February, which means pitchers and catchers will soon be reporting to Spring Training, which means baseball is just around the corner! Even if things don't get into full swing until late March, it is still exciting to have the buzz in the air, however faint. For me, in a way, baseball never really ended like it normally does. Almost a couple of weeks into the offseason, I started up a playthrough of Bases Loaded II. This is another game that requires a full season of play, which meant I got to have my baseball fix for a little while without actually having baseball. It's been stewing in my mind ever since, from compiling this review to creating the video to releasing my review. Now I'm really ready for Spring to get here. I'm really proud of how this review turned out. Don't miss it just because it's about another baseball game! Review: #141 - Bases Loaded II: Second Season
  19. I have a disk system and a few games. Eggerland, Otocky, Nazo No Murasamejou, Meikyuu Jiin Dababa, maybe one or two others. I've never gotten my disk system to work fully though. I replaced the belt, got it to run once or twice so I know it works. I haven't messed around with it in a year or two now, but I probably should figure it out.
  20. I am getting this cart out tomorrow for a try, excited to give it a go!
  21. Shoutout to this thread for about giving me a heart attack this morning. Happy both sites are still alive!
