Sad to see the Action 53 moniker being phased out but certainly glad the comp carts will continue. Excellent write up.
I still need to dive into the last year's competition entries.

@DefaultGen How dare you badmouth Videomation. The single best art-as-video-game ever made.

Still haven't seen The Thing. Always meant to.

I'm ashamed to admit I've never watched Jaws in it's entirety. Just never really appealed to me.

Ask any person over the age of 40 what the scariest movie of all time is, and there's like an 80% chance they're going to say The Exorcist. Ask a Catholic, and it's like a 150% chance.
Scariest movie of all time. Over 40 and raised Catholic.

I guess I just liked the homespun feel of the thing. It was being run by a guy who loves Atari. But now that it's being run by a company instead of a person, it lost that uniqueness, which was, in my opinion, a main reason of its existance. It rebelled Atari, and for Al to just do a 180 and embrace the company? That just seems kind of odd to me,
Well, it's still being run by a guy who loves Atari. But now he's beholden to the man. I expect AtariAge will ultimately become an advertising vehicle in the long run. How long til they're shilling Atari brand products? Wait...
QuoteIt is very exciting to see Atari release the 2600+, a new 2600 you can feed actual cartridges, and without giving anything specific away, this is just the beginning of what we're going to see from Atari going forward.
I do want one of them 2600+, though.

Dude, that news totally caught me off guard. I don't frequent AA often but I'm on there. Can't say I wouldn't make the same decision as Al. While it's certainly concerning, I feel like there's still passion there. I don't expect it will be the same shit show as NA.
At least until the ad banners arrive...

He didn't provide a link to his weblog, where is it? Is it a separate website?
There is totally a link to the previous entry immediately preceding you're first post.

I tried to fire up Mario 35 bout a month ago just to see. Can confirm it's still down. Such a good game.

Always love a good Mega Man writeup. It's no secret that MM2 is my top and although MM5 is in my bottom half of the NES saga, I would hesitate to say it's one of the "worst" of the series. It's more like it's among the least best. It def has some hits, Gravity Man's level is some of my favorites across the 6 titles.
I still love MM5 more than probably 85% of the entire NES library. And it's better than any of the X entries which are still amazing games (X4 being my particular favorite of that series).
I'm probably due for a replay of 5. That'll be my next playthrough on the Nintendo.
Obligatory MM ranking: 2>3>1>6>5>4

Dude I get that all the time. I always tell people about this old computer game where you're a sleezy 40 year old virgin running around trying to score. Nobody ever knows what I'm talking about.

Twilight
I had the misfortunate obligation to watch Twilight after losing a Super Bowl bet some years ago. I cheated a little and watched the RiffTrax version, but it was pretty awful. Never took you for the sparkly vampire type.

Great write up on the scene. I often wonder about the beta testing corner. I'm not on social media so my own avenues are pretty limited. But it seemed like testing was more prevalent a few years back.
I'd love to see a centralized tester resource available for dev access. And definitely understand the apprehension brewers have with just soliciting the fanbase. I've seen a couple different betas where more than a few testers on the roster offered little feedback or were completely MIA. Devs should be able to ask for a level of commitment as well as non-disclosure from a potential team.
Really, feedback should flow both ways. With a centralized resource, developers could give feedback on individual contributions of team members.

This is huuuge! Congrats @dra600n on landing Montezuma's Revenge. It's been a minute since I've been this stoked about a homebrew.

In depth fantastic read and great interviews. Thanks, Deadeye. Nebs 'n Debs is some of my favorites.
For my money, I'd have given it the top marks for the '16 compo. Not to discount Twin Dragons. It had a lot of polish and I can see how it won. But Nebs is so damn fun to play.
Great write up on the mechanics in particular. There's a bit more to the feedback system than I noticed. It's very intuitive.
