If it's not, it's because food elitists made a sub they really like and now pretend it's in its own category of foodstuffs because they don't want it compared to lesser subs. It's just a long piece of bread with meat and cheese. A higher quality of a footlong steak and cheddar from Quiznos.

The real question is what bread dimensions make a sandwich a "sub".

Is a hotdog a sub?  (it is certainly a "sandwich", at least)

If not a regular hotdog -- is a footlong hotdog a sub?

😛

But yes, a Philly cheesesteak is a type of submarine sandwich.

1) it's a sandwich

2) it's significantly longer than it is wide

3) you generally keep the two halves of the bread connected (not a strict requirement, since some places do a full separation-slice or a trench cut -- but a pretty common feature of sub sandwiches)

I've never heard the term "sub sandwich" before though.

Sub is short for submarine sandwich.*

Subs are also sometimes called hero sandwiches (or sometimes just heroes).

*I have always wanted to open a sandwich shop called "Captain Nemo's."

Yes, I am quite aware of that, but submarine sandwich isn't the same as sub sandwich; the latter combination I've never heard before, I mean why abbreviate only partially?

Some  Many people  are just downright lazy.  Look at how many people can't be bothered to spell even relatively simple words correctly.

I usually think of subs as having lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and other garden vegetables on it. Phillies in that regard are a sandwich but not quite a sub.

Yet they do serve them at Subway... although they also serve wraps, salads and did serve pizza...

What about meatball and chicken parmesan subs though...

I think a lot of hot subs don't necessarily have such an array of veggies on them.
