Almost everything I own was bought in lots well after the given system was popular, so there really was no "first" game for most. A few exceptions:

Atari 2600: Video Chess (before I knew it was famous for cheating).

Commodore 64: Gridrunner

3DS: Fire Emblem something. Can't remember which one.

WiiU: Pikmin3.

I'm only listing the consoles that were purchased new or given to me new when the systems were active.  I'm not listing consoles that I purchased years later in the used market.

  • Atari 2600 - Space Invaders (purchased the week I was born)
  • NES - Super Mario Bros. / Duck Hunt (purchased out of the blue by my parents - not Christmas)
    • First game not including the pack in was Rad Racer
  • SNES - Super Mario World (surprise Christmas present)
    • First game not including the pack in was Donkey Kong Country
  • Game Boy - Tetris (Christmas present)
    • First game not including the pack in was Super Mario Land
  • PS1 - Crash Bandicoot & Tomb Raider (Christmas present)
  • PS2 - James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire (Christmas present)
  • PS3 - Motor Storm, Rock Band & Call of Duty 3 (bought myself several years into the PS3's life)
  • Wii - Wii Sports (Christmas present)
    • Not sure about first game after the pack in
  • Xbox 360 - Kinect Adventures (Christmas present)
    • First game not including the pack in was Forza Motorsport 4
  • 3DS - Super Mario 3D Land (bought as an impulse at Target while on sale)
    • Not sure about first game after the pack in
  • PS4 - I owned about 30 PS4 games before getting the system.  I have no idea which one was first.
  • Wii U - I owned about a dozen Wii U games before getting the system.  I have no idea which one was first.
    • The PS4 and Wii U were both bought on Cyber Monday the November before the Switch launched during 20% off sale at Target.  As mentioned, I had moderately sized collections for both systems before getting the actual consoles.
  • Switch - Mari Kart 8 Deluxe (Christmas present for my oldest son)

GBC - Tetris DX, Game & Watch Gallery 2
GBA** - Super Mario Advance, F-Zero, Chu Chu Rocket
           - Castlevania, Tony Hawk 2, Iridion, Super Dodge Ball, Namco Museum, Konami Krazy Racers, Iridion 3D
GC - Luigi's Mansion, Star Wars RS2, Wave Race
DC - Sonic Adventure, Hydro Thunder, R2R Boxing, Airforce Delta
NGPC - Sonic(pack-in) and others ***

NDS - Super Mario 64, Feel the Magic, Asphalt Urban GT
WiiU - New SMB U
3DS - Pilotwings, Steel Diver, Ridge Racer, Super SF IV 3D Edition
Switch - Zelda, Super Bomberman R

** - I was working online with the right people at the time, got the GBA in April (before the June US launch) along with the 3 games listed, by sheer luck with the glacier model.  The other games I listed I bought up to 2-3 weeks ahead of launch as companies sent them to retail in advance so I just went in daily to buy them as they arrived.

*** I got a few games with the NGPC but I don't remember which day one, but some had gone on sale already and I got the system close to the Dreamcast launch.  By the end of 1999 I remember having: Metal Slug, Neo Turf Masters, Samurai Shodown 2, KOF R2, Bust a Move Pocket, Biomotor Unitron, Pac-Man, Fatal Fury, Snk vs Capcom MOTM.

I started to participate when this went up, but then held off, as this seems like one of those questions that's better to talk about in person versus text that's available forever, since these skate nearby to what type of questions get asked to secure someone's online account.  I know that's not the case here, but it did make me hesitate, then reverse my decision to share.  Maybe this could be brought up during one of the next game nights, as it would be fun to compare and contrast without the worry.

Is this the order in which you got the various gaming machines? If so, no wonder out tastes vary so much. Wow.

Correct.  I did not own my own personal NES and Genesis until the 2010s.  I had to play them at friends' houses, and later, emulate.

What's the maiden name of the woman who bought you your first NES game?

At which school did you first play your first GB game?

These would be terrible security questions since it would be pretty easy to guess the answers for people who lived through the era of the "pack in game."

The first game I played with each console isn't the same as the first game that I owned. So for example on the SNES I first played Super Mario World, but the first game I personally owned was Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts. That's because up until my teens it was always my older brothers who decided which console, handheld and games we had. I only got to wish for the occasional game on whose systems. Eventually I got Super Mario Allstars, Mega Man X, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and Lufia II.

The first console, that I personally bought and owned, was a run-down PS1 that I got around 2000 from a mom-and-pop store. By that time it was very cheap, but luckily still functioning very well. I wanted the PS1 in the first place because I once saw it at a friend's house and how they had Final Fantasy VIII. I couldn't believe it! FF II and III were legendary games that I could have only dreamed about owning back in the day. I would read through gaming magazines with eager eyes not knowing that they never made it to the EU and that I wouldn't even be able to play them. But then they had FF VIII?! Where were FF IV - VII?

Anyway, after that I just had to own this console and play FF VIII to my heart's content. However, when I eventually saved up enough money and got the console, the store didn't have the game that I wanted. It did have Final Fantasy though, but it was only FF VII. My kid logic was like 8 > 7, so FF VII must be worse than FF VIII …

I totally forgot the N64. My brothers got to own the classics, like the Mario and Zelda games, so I got stuck with the "leftovers" like Bomberman 64. I can't remember any other game that I personally owned. Those were mostly my brothers's games and I was still catching up with SNES and GB games like Pokemon.

Next up was the Gamecube and the first game I got for that one was Metroid Prime which absolutely blew my mind back in the day. What a game!

Playstation 2 - Final Fantasy X. I regretted buying a Gamecube after I saw this game at another friend's house.

Playstation 3 - Final Fantasy XIII. The third and ultimately last time that I bought a console for a FF game. This one burned me pretty hard. It's not bad as a game though, just not was I was looking for in a FF game.

Playstation 4 - Persona 5 and Ys 8.

Wii and Wii U - I can't even remember. I got those pretty late and honestly didn't play much on them at all.

Switch - Breath of the Wild.

Handhelds:

Game Boy - Mega Man 3, Mega Man 1

GBA - Pokemon Gold

DS - Pokemon Diamond

PSP - Rockman Dash 1 and 2, Rockman Rockman + Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X. I got these during my time in Japan.

3DS - Pokemon X

PS Vita - Persona 4 Golden

Atari 2600 - Pitfall, Combat (Was my dad's system not technically mine but I did play it some as a kid in the 80s.)

SNES - Super Mario All-Stars + World (Got it March 1995 with birthday money)

GBA - Mario Kart Super Circuit, Golden Sun (first console I got on release day, June 2001)

GCN - Super Smash Bros Melee (Another one I got on release, Nov 2001. Actually smash bros didn't come out til a few weeks after launch so I bought the system without any games)

What makes this a tad hard is some of these systems for me were purchased in lots.  So, my first "game" were actually games, and I have no clue which one I played first, but in mostly chronological order, here's the main systems.

  • 2600 - Pac-Man, Pole Position, Combat and Missile Command.  I think there were a few more, but these  were the ones most played.  I seem to recall my parents bought us a 2600 at the end of the crash and managed to get a system and probably 5-8 games for less than $100.
  • NES - SMB/Duck Hunt
  • Game Boy - Tetris, World Cup Soccer, Alley Way & Duck Tales - I got this on Christmas day.  Tetris was the pack-in, but the other games were also gifts.  I think my brother got Gargoyle's Quest so that too might be a first since we always shared games.
  • Game Gear - Sonic 2
  • GBC - Probably Link's Awakening DX?
  • N64 - Super Mari 64.  Let'sa go!
  • PSX - Final Fantasy VII / Star Wars: Rebel Assault II.  I've documented my hype for FF VII.  I legit bought both the strategy guide AND the game before I owned a PSX.  I went to my Dad's house for Christmas in 1997 and I had no clue he got me a PSX.  When I opened it, he also gave me a gift of Star Wars: Rebel Assault II so technically Rebel Assault is the first game I played on my own system, but it wasn't the first game I owned.
  • PS2 - Street Figher EX 3, Ridge Racer V and Kessen. (My first and only system import!)
  • GBA - Advance War, maybe.
  • GameCube - I think it was Metroid Prime
  • X-Box - I think it was a Rainbow Six title, but this was a gift and I, uh... returned it because other than Halo, I wasn't an X-Box fan. 😛
  • DS - SM 64 DS or Mario Kart.
  • Wii - Wii Sport
  • 3DS - The "Ambassador's Club"  DLC.  It was a long time before I bought a 3DS title.  I'm not sure which one it was.
  • SNES - Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (and others, but can't recall which ones.)
  • Genesis - Sonic 2. Probably.
  • Saturn - I legit walked into a game shop and made a deal with the owner to buy every unique, good conditioned title he had.  I picked up maybe 20 games?  I wanted to start strong.
  • Switch - Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • TG-16 - Keith Courage
  • This is where it all get's hazy.  I'd started collecting in 2016 and it's tough to say, but I picked up many other systems and most came in lots. I have no clue which games came in which lots.

(Forgot to add Switch.)

Did you get 3DS just to play DS titles? They didn’t announce the Ambassador program, so you likely didn’t know you were going to get all those ambassador GBA games at the time of buying the 3DS

No, they released the Ambassador program (or announced that they would be doing an Ambassador program) and at that time, getting those 20 classics was a BIG deal--official, portable NES titles plus a bunch of GBA games I missed, but wanted to play!  For me it was a no-brainer, so I bought a unit as soon as I heard about the program.

I mean, it wasn't worth (what, $200?) at the time just for those 20 games, but knowing that I would be buying more 3DS games (and I did have a DS, so it was an upgrade) meant that it wasn't that expensive.  I still have the device with all of those games on it.

I thought it came out at $250 and then the day they announced the price cut, they also announced the ambassador program so that people that already paid $250 wouldn’t be pissed
