Go To Game

So you have some free time and sit down to play something.  Are you always playing from your backlog or do you have a go to game you will revisit often?  I.e.  a Contra run through or a couple worlds of SMB3.   If so, why is that game your go to?

A little of both. There are some I put next to my console because I want to play it and chip away at the game, but there are others I keep nearby too because I like playing them on days where I feel “ok I don’t have much time because it’s been busy but I’m going to play something for a little bit and enjoy some free time damnit!” So for instance, my chipping away game is Final Fantasy III in SNES, but my play something quick game is 0-to-X.

Super Smash Bros is my go-to game usually. Melee is my preferred version but I've been playing Ultimate when I have only enough time for a quick session and try to chip away at getting 100% in the game (and that will take quite a while given how much stuff is in the game).

Tetris/Tetris 99 is another one that's good to pick up for a quick game or two when I don't have much time. The Switch is just perfect for quick gaming sessions.

But if I have a longer amount of time to play a game then I'm usually tackling something in my backlog/whatever I'm currently playing

Castle Crashers for sure, I've beat it dozens of times over the years and generally if I want to play something for a little bit I will just fire it up to work on leveling up or unlocking a new character generally I am in no hurry to do so as I am really just dicking around until either I think of something else to play, if its not that I will toss in a random shmup or play something retro that's a quick play or might take a couple hours to run though, castlevania, mega man, double dragon  or just some random something I haven't played in sometime.

If I have quite some time on my hands I will fire up something off the backlog and try to work on completing it or whittle at it at least.  With cold weather/winter coming my backlog hopefully will shrink some.

Mine varies by console (mainly, which one is easiest available):

7800:   Food Fight
5200:   Gremlins
2600:   Kaboom!
NES:    Super Mario Bros.
GB:     Kirby's Pinball Land
INTV:   Happy Trails

As to "why", I guess mostly comfort factor and because I know exactly what to expect. These aren't necessarily my favorite on the respective consoles but they are up there. In most cases, these specific games stay in or next to said consoles.

I go to these because I'm guaranteed to enjoy my time playing them. Some systems I've yet to find a game to fill that need, like Master System, PC Engine/TG16, NGage, Tapwave Zodiac, etc.

Some great answers here.  I usually will pop in SMB3, Mega Man 2, DuckTales, Marble Madness, or NES Virus Cleaner to name several.

@MachineCode I too wish Marble Madness had a sequel.

As far as the ones that are just pick up from a save, if there has been a while between plays, I usually have to start over.  This mostly applies to RPGs.  However, @RH I agree with you about FF7.  I have played it so many times, I can load a save, look at where I am on the map or in a town and know what I have to do.  This also applies to Castlevania SOTN.  Just open the map and go.

I wish more people talked about Intellivision.  My friend had one growing up and we love playing BurgerTime and Lock N Chase.

My next door neighbor friend had an Intellivision. I had an Atari 2600. We played a lot of Demon Attack, Frogger, BurgerTime and Night Stalker among others.

Breath of the Wild

Multiple playthroughs or the same save?

The first time I played it (around release time), I poures 150+ hours into the game, then I didn't play it again until about a week ago.  Me personally, I needed space from the game for a while.

It is just me, or did they add more treasure chests in the world?
