  1. The swamp level in Monster Hunter G is the first thing that comes to mind. I think the other areas might have good environmental sounds, but the swamp is what stands out to me. I'm guessing Monster Hunter on PS2 would be mostly the same.
  2. You're not completely out of luck with RPGs. There are two compilations of Wizardry games that have English language options. Wizardry Llylgamyn Saga includes the first three games in the series and Wizardy New Age of Llylgamyn includes the fourth and fifth. If I recall correctly, the save/load menus stay in Japanese, but they should be easy enough to figure out. There is an enhanced version of the fourth game included too, but most of the text is in Japanese only for that one. Here are a few more that haven't been mentioned: Internal Section - Tunnel shooter. If you like games like Tempest, n2O, and Rez, give this a try. Ore No Ryouri - Cooking game. There's quite a bit of Japanese text in this, but it shouldn't be too hard to figure out through trial and error. There are a lot of command prompts that tell you what to do. Beat Planet Music - Rhythm game. It plays like Frequency and Amplitude, although it's less complicated. Has a music generator as well. Vib Ribbon - Rhythm game. Only has a few songs, but you can use your own CDs and it will generate new levels from them. Kyutenkai Fantasic Pinball - Reminds me a lot of Devil's Crush, except everything is made to look cute. The Cameraman: Gekisha Boy (Simple 1500 series Vol. 94) - Photography game. Port of a PC engine game. Imagine a 2D Pokemon Snap. I don't have much to say about these, but they are all sequels to games that got a US release. If you enjoyed the originals, they might be good choices: Tobal 2 Psychic Force 2 (actually a port of Psychic Force 2012, with some differences) Poitter's Point 2 (Poy Poy sequel) Xi Jumbo (Devil Dice sequel) IQ Final (Intelligent Qube sequel) Mr. Driller Great (3rd game in the series) Finally, here are a couple of other games that are related games you may already be familiar with: Kero Kero King (the original Ribbit King game) Klonoa Beach Volleyball (Volleyball game with Klonoa characters) Note that some of the games I've mentioned were released in Europe, so they're not actually exclusive to Japan. I'm just assuming you're looking for Japanese games that weren't released in the US.
  3. Seiken Densetsu really is a Final Fantasy spin-off. They used the Final Fantasy name in Japan too. It's full name is Final Fantasy Gaiden: Seiken Densetsu. You might be thinking of the three SaGa Game Boy games. They were released in the US as the Final Fantasy Legend series. Although the fourth Seiken Densetsu game, Seiken Densetsu: Legend of Mana isn't part of the main series. Seiken Densetsu 4 was released on PlayStation 2 and sold in the US as Dawn of Mana.
  4. I started playing yesterday after I finished Yoshi's Story. I'm not looking to rush through it though, so it will likely take me longer than a day.
  5. I played through Yoshi's Story today.
  6. 230,100 I'm a bit rusty, so this took me a few tries. To get this score, I played until just before the final boss and lost on purpose twice so I could replay the stage. I then beat it on the third life. I played pretty cautiously, so a significantly higher score is possible.
  7. Yeah, I do have a feeling Mysterium won't be as good as I remember. I'd still like to go back to it though. What did you (or anyone else here) think of Wizardry IV? Has anyone beaten it without help? It had some nice ideas and I really wanted to like it, but the extreme difficulty made it a chore to play. It's got to be the most difficult RPG I've ever played. It's the only one that ever I started but didn't finish due to the difficulty.
  8. I'd say Wizardry V is my favorite. I've only played the first 5, so I'd like to give the others a try someday. If you count it, the original Persona is pretty good too. I don't even mind the translation everyone complains about. Swords and Serpents isn't bad either. the multi-player option seems interesting, but I never took advantage of it. I'd like to revisit Mysterium for Game Boy some day. I played it for a bit a long time ago and kinda like it, but I never went back and finished it.
  9. I started playing Starlink Battle for Atlas. It seems a bit repetitive so far. I just keep fighting the same or similar group of enemies over and over. I'm hoping it will get better if I just ignore the side missions (with the exception of the Star Fox stuff) and focus on the main campaign.
  10. Glad you guys had fun. I enjoyed putting it together and would like to run another contest some time (likely at the end of the year again). I'm not sure if it would be another Game Boy one or something else yet.
  11. I recall having fun with it, but I haven't played in a long time. Can't say I remember much about it.
  12. That's it for the Game Boy Weekly Contest! The leaderboard has been updated. Congratulations to @0xDEAFC0DE for taking the top spot. Hope everyone had fun!
  13. No mention of Silpheed yet? It's one of my favorite shooters. It's pretty simple, but it plays well.
  14. You might want to consider putting a limit on the number of lives and loops you can use for this contest. It loops endlessly and the difficulty doesn't change significantly after the second loop. You can also score enough points on the last level to get an extra life, so you can just keep playing that level over and over until you reach 1,000,000 points (you stop getting extra lives after that).
  15. Hello and welcome to the final round of the Game Boy Weekly Contest! This week's game is Tetris. If you've never played before, don't worry! It's pretty easy to learn. Guide falling blocks to the bottom of the screen to create horizontal lines. When a line is made without any gaps, all the blocks in the line will disappear. Clear multiple lines at once to score big points. Be careful! The more lines you clear, the faster the blocks will fall. If the blocks pile up to the top of the screen, it's Game Over! How long will you last? Rules: -Choose Game Type A -Start on any level you want -Play until Game Over or you max out the score -Highest Score Wins -If you max out the score, immediately pause the game and take your picture. If more than one participant maxes out the score, the participant who did it with the least amount of lines is the winner -You have until 11:00 PM EST on Sunday, February 9, 2020 to submit your score. 16. I might join in every now and then, but I don't plan on being a regular participant.
  17. Hello and welcome to the ninth round of the Game Boy Weekly Contest! This week's game is Mercenary Force. Rules: -Start a new game and choose any characters you'd like -Play until Game Over or you reach the Stage 6 (final) boss -If you reach the final boss, pause the game before the fight starts (your run ends here) -Bonus Points - If you reach the final boss and have a full 4 person team and one of your team members is the mystic, you may add your unused money to your score -Highest total score wins -You have until 11:00 PM EST on Sunday, February 2, 2020 to submit your score. 18. I've suggested this one before, but I think Ghostbusters II would work as long as a rule is made to prevent a one-up loop in the first driving stage. If you want to do The Guardian Legend again, there is a way to make it work as a high score competition. When you use the TGL code, it shows a score between stages, but this score isn't the same as the one shown while you're playing. It disregards any points you receive during the boss battles. There are a few problems with this though. You can only see this score between stages, so you'll have to keep taking new pictures as you play. It doesn't stay up very long either. The last time it shows up is at the end of Area 10, so the last two areas would have to be excluded. Xexyz might be a good choice. Like The Guardian Legend, there's a password that lets you just play the shooting stages. Although, it has been a while since I've played, so I don't remember if you could point press at the bosses. Tiny Toon Adventures might work as well. Have you ever considered adding Famicom games? I'm guessing you'd want to keep things accessible to people who play with real software/hardware, but adapters aren't very expensive and you could choose cheap games like Atlantis No Nazo or Pooyan.
  19. Hello and welcome to the eighth round of the Game Boy Weekly Contest! Tired of reptile-based Weekly Contest games? Let's try a penguin-based one! This week's game is Amazing Penguin. Hopefully it goes better than last time I chose a penguin-based game. Rules: -Play until Game Over or you beat the game (you may not use continues or passwords) -Highest score wins -You have until 11:00 PM EST on Sunday, January 26, 2020 to submit your score. For general contest rules, click here: https://www.videogamesage.com/topic/1468-game-boy-weekly-contest-leaderboard-rules-20192020/ Good luck and have fun! 20. @Ausden Please check the rules. This is a distance/low score contest. You have to take your picture on the pause screen so we can see which level you reached.
  21. What should the win condition for Championship Pro-Am be? It loops after 24 tracks, but if you do 2 loops, your trophy room is filled and you get extra bonus points. In the NES thread, one loop of RC Pr-Am is considered beating it (Championship Pro-Am is a port of it).
  22. Hello and welcome to the seventh round of the Game Boy Weekly Contest! Ever play Snake Rattle 'n' Roll? Tough game, right? Do you think it would be easier if it was 2D side-scroller? Well, find out with this week's game, Sneaky Snakes! Collect power-ups and 1-ups to reach higher stages. Careful! This is a distance/low score competition, so the more items you collect, the easier your score will be to beat! Rules: -Play until Game Over or you beat the game (you may not use continues) -Submit a picture of the pause screen at the beginning of the furthest level you reached -You must reach Level 2 to submit a score -If you beat the game, take your picture on the Final Score screen -Furthest distance wins -If more than one player reaches the same stage or beat the game, lowest score wins -You have until 11:00 PM EST on Sunday, January 19, 2020 to submit your score. For general contest rules, click here: https://www.videogamesage.com/topic/1468-game-boy-weekly-contest-leaderboard-rules-20192020/ Good luck and have fun!
