  1. Besides video games I also collect the boxes that house said video games. Nothing else really. Books about art and design I guess. I'd love to get into synthesizers and sound equipment
  2. I think for snes there's repro trays that look different and they're obviously not original. If I can tell, doesn't bother me because I'm more concerned for the structural integrity of the box
  3. I use a turbo booster that I bought a while ago. I think I payed 120 or something for it
  4. A couple people playing Earthbound here, maybe I'll make that my next game after I beat Ninja Gaiden
  5. The trick only works if you mash down and b at the same time, if you autofire just the slash, it still has a cool down and you can only slash a couple times before hitting the ground again. Pushing down at the same time is what cancels the cool down
  6. Haha man that feeling of defeat after all that work to beat the last couple levels only to be sent all the way back. I'm going to keep at it though while I still have the muscle memory. That said I am enjoying the game a lot, its very rewarding when you make progress
  7. I guess I'll find out when I get to him. Makes it a bit more stressful knowing if you fuck up you get sent back
  8. I usually use up all my sub weapons in the main stage, there's a couple areas before the last boss that are a pain otherwise. With the bosses my strategy so far has been mash the sword and hope they die first, which has been working beautifully so far I just didn't bother trying again this time because I had been grinding the last stages for a while and didn't feel like doing it again. But now that I've beaten all the levels in world 6 it shouldn't be too bad getting back to it.
  9. I am now fairly comfortable saying PS2 era is retro. Anything newer not so much. It won't be long before we start getting into games that will flat out not work anymore due to servers shutting down and all that, so I dunno how lucrative this era will be from a collecting and preservation stand point anyway
  10. You mean each form? That makes it much more comforting actually. I have found all the bosses really easy so far. I only gave this boss one go because I didn't want to play through all those levels again right now, but if I only need to kill each one once thats not too bad. Should be able to finish this on my next go
  11. Got to the final boss of Ninja Gaiden (first form). Then died. Then went all the way back to 6-1. Then rage quit. Fuckin game. On the plus side I got pretty good at wall climbing and slash cancels, so thats cool
  12. Nah just kinda in general. The conversation has mostly been about whether a game aging well should impact a review on it
  13. I understand the context isn't the same in 1985 that it is in 2021, but this is the year 2021, so what exactly do we gain from thinking about the games in their original context? I guess I just dont see the point. I wanna know if the game is fun now
  14. I used to be primarily a crt user but damn are they a pain in the ass to move around haha. I've softened up on using newer displays, and I know it's not the same but I dont really see it as hampering my experience. The controller is a deal breaker for me though, if I'm playing NES, I want an NES controller. As much as I hate to say it I think using original hardware is getting to be more trouble than its worth.
  15. I dont know why there's this need to compare everything though. Like yeah comparing contra to the witcher is dumb and says nothing about the merits of either game because they were trying to achieve completely different things. But even comparing say Mario World to Mario 3, is world "technically" superior, sure. But does that affect how much fun Mario 3 is? I dont think so personally. Mario 3 is a fun game, just because Mario World now exists doesn't change that. More levels, longer levels, being able to save, doesn't necessarily make a better game. They're both platformers and if the running and jumping feels good, what's the problem? I dunno, not directed at anybody but I see the comparison thing coming up a bit. It's fair to see how one game stacks up in its respective genre as a whole, but they're all different games whether they're from the same series or not. So comparing one game to one other game doesn't really help much. If I like Mario World, I would probably like Mario 3 as well, it doesn't have to be a competition between the 2, right?
  16. I think it just boils down to trying to get a formula thats easy to replicate so they can churn out more content. But to me that kinda stuff has little substance
  17. Looking forward to your thoughts on Undertale. I liked that game a lot
  18. I've been messing around a bit with mega man 3 and duck tales and so far I thought both games were quite good but neither has really grabbed me yet. Today I popped in Ninja Gaiden and I think this game is fantastic. I am hooked. Gunnuh try to beat this one before the end of the month, to meet my 1 game per month goal. Got to 5-2 today.
  19. For me personally I think the best way to tackle this is to decide: Is this game fun? Why or why not? I see a lot of reviews where they look at one aspect at a time and categorize everything, like music is 4 out of 5, graphics is 3 out of 5, etc. But to me that doesn't really say much. The game should be looked at as a whole, if it is fun you should be able to explain why it is fun in a succinct but well thought out manner. A lot of the time I see reviewers just explain what the game does. "So its a side scroller, you jump on enemies, you get power ups, then there's a boss." That's great they can regurgitate what they see happening on the screen, so can anyone else. I want to know why these aspects of the game are fun. I dont need the whole game explained to me from start to end. Another thing to consider is we all have our preferences. If someone doesn't like a genre of game, their opinion of that game won't have any meaning to someone who does enjoy that genre of game.
  20. Great, 2 completely opposite answers haha. I guess I'll just try it and see
