I did see that. But logically, if he's making them, I'll just wait until they're in stock. At no point did he mention they were only made to order.

That's on you, then. Logically, nobody ever once mentioned stock being put up on his store. The intent of the thread was to me pretty clearly for these to be made to order. He literally said "PM me what you want and I'll get it to you".

There was a wide variety of those available - from cheap utilitarian models to more elaborate ones with pictures on them.  If you had the rack that would hold the trays (generally 4 trays) they could be tucked away in various places close to (or in) the TV room (often the living room) until needed.   They were generally pretty small and not particularly stable so they really only easily  fit one need.

You know what there may well have been 4 and placed exactly as you describe. Interestingly it wasn't even the pictures that triggered the nostalgia, it was the four little screws at the top of each which connect the "table" to the legs - I recall those being there. And then of course the picture quickly followed. I think it may be the case that I just considered the one with the dogs as "mine", and if I recall (I don't) they were likely at my grandparents' house.

The TV dinners back in the mid-fifties thru mid-seventies were very  much a reflection of the influence of television on US society.   (There were people who argued that tv dinners were a negative influence since families no longer  had dinner at the dinner table where they could discuss things and actually communicate- now they met in the living room where whatever was on the screen was the central focus,)  They fit an economic niche where companies such as Swanson could produce fairly elaborate meals at a relatively cheap price.  The nascent fast food industry was not in a state where they could provide much competition in variety and while a bit cheaper not nearly as satisfying (for a long time McDonald's, White Castle etc offered only hamburgers, cheeseburgers, sodas and fries).  The advent of microwaves and the shift away from the dominance of traditional television (with the introduction of recorded mediums the TV networks no longer dictated (in a sense) when a family would dine to watch popular only broadcast series at times not of the families choosing).  For better or worse it was the end of an often  unrecognized era.

Hey I had one of those! It had hunting dogs on it, if I recall.

  4. I took a break from beating games to play the ever loving hell out of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (PS2) online. There are a number of PS2 games with small communities dedicated to playing their online versions (gonna play some OG Killzone in a bit here...) and there was an achievement set added to BF2MC, so I felt the call of the completionist as I tend to do with competitive multiplayer FPS games. Yesterday I wrapped that up, earning the final achievement I needed for 100% completion.

The whole thing took around 90 hours to do, which honestly is actually less than I expected. The existing player base is insanely highly skilled at the game, and I ended up rank 21 upon completion, so I believe we can now consider me to be insanely highly skilled at the game. There was a pretty significant early game hurdle to get over, the people playing are not very welcoming in their gameplay style; sure they'll greet you nicely enough on Discord, but in-game you're gonna get fuckin' stomped. I had to really suck it up and git gud quickly before it got too frustrating, and while I still go "ugh, this guy - may as well just turn the game off" when I see certain people hop into the game, I got there in the end; there may even be a person or two now who see me login and go "ah shit I'm fucked".

Anyway, that's my annual dose of bragging. That out of my system, I can get back to playing normal human games.

  5. It's done so a few times, yeah. I've not pared down recently, trying to avoid having to do so (despite the no job thing) as I legit have like 99% of my personal collection goals completed and I don't want to have to revisit that in the future.

Over the last year or so I've started a very humble big box PC game collection, but it's slow going; I basically started with the one key game I wanted to get in mint condition (Might and Magic VII), and everything after that is icing on the cake. I did manage to get an ok condition Planescape: Torment for $20 hand delivered to my door, so that was pretty excellent.

Beyond deals like that though I'm currently prioritizing keeping my house over game purchases. I have plenty of games to keep me busy, RetroAchievements to earn via emulation, and Oldschool Runescape for when I wanna veg out. Honestly I could basically be set for life right now if I never bought another game again.

  6. I've not played it, and it'll be a long while before I entertain doing so. You know I was really disappointed with the direction of both the combat and the story in the first Remake game, never finished that, so it's a hurdle I'd have to overcome to even glance in this one's direction.

I'm honestly really disappointed that I don't like it. They don't have to cater to me, nobody needs to make games the way I want them, but such a drastic shift from both what I'd consider a good remake of FF7 and from what I enjoy playing in general has made the whole thing incredibly unappealing for me.

I still think some of the stuff on the current list would be good to do but here is my running list of suggestions for the future.  Feel free to repost at any time with your own commentary, additions etc.

SUSHI - (I'm not really expecting a whole lot of people to want to do this, but you never know unless you ask...)

SEAFOOD - (Make something that came from water)

MUSHROOMS - (Make something that utilizes mushrooms in some way)

STUFF IT IN - (Make something that involves stuffing one or more things inside of something else)

GRILL IT - (Make something on the grill outside)

    SOUP OR STEW (Make one)

AWESOME SAUCE - (For dipping, pouring, marinating etc. just make an awesome sauce)

BIG KAHUNA BURGER - (I think most of us probably know where the idea for this one originated.  Pick one of the made up recipes available online or make up your own version of this semi-fictitious burger.)

Stew is by far one of my favourite meals to make. Top 3 easily.

I have some questions for everyone.

How often do you play these games outside of playing in the tournament?

How often do you play retro games for fun in your every day lives?

When was the last time you played world 4-1 of this game?

I regularly, near daily, play retro games. As for 4-1, I recently played through the game on All-stars, if you wanna count that (I played and beat every game on the compilation), so a few weeks ago.

  10. "Why should movies and games get all the attention?", I asked myself today. And so here I am stealing @Reed Rothchild's formula for success and totally definitely not gonna stop at number like 10 or whatever cuz I get bored or busy or something.

So let's start with something people have probably actually seen. Ren & Stimpy.
