How big is your collection in 2024??

Recommended Posts

Very impressive numbers in this thread! My collection isn't too big, but it's currently at 413 games across various consoles as follows:

NES - 92
SNES - 30
Virtual Boy - 2
N64 - 16
Gamecube - 13
Switch - 17

PlayStation - 8
PS 2 - 24
PS 4 - 11
PS Vita - 4

Dreamcast - 83
Genesis - 15

XBox - 35
XBox 360 - 46
XBox One / Sx - 5

Odyssey 2 - 12

I collect mostly stuff from my childhood; have never been big on playstation. Growth going forward will mostly be NES, SNES and Dreamcast, but taking it pretty casual.

Happy collecting in 2024! I'll be interested in seeing some of these numbers next year! 🙂

2,500+ easily. I don't have a collection tool though. Anybody have any good recommendations?

Excel and Onedrive. Doesn’t cost much for a license or O365 subscription, infinitely customizable, store on your own storage, no outages or chance that a company stops supporting it. My problem with all the ones that exist like GameEye is they don’t account for homebrews and adding an entry for every one I buy is cumbersome.

Google sheets is a close second but I don’t like how it doesn’t support tables for sorting A-Z, unless it was recently added. Still don’t like its reliance on an internet connection.

It is really just personal preference though for whatever you use. I was keeping track in Game Value Now for a while as well just for fun to see a value of my collection but I stopped doing that a couple months ago. Remembering to add in two spots was annoying.

I'm currently sitting around 370 physical games:

45% - NES / FC

28% - Atari 2600

9% - SNES / SFC

6% - GB

5% - Genesis / MD

5% - TG-16 / PCE

2% - SMS

I plan to put a hard cap on my collection around 460 physical games, which should be enough to cover most of the "must-have" titles left on my shopping list for the next several years.

I know a lot of people roll their eyes at the idea of "playing every game in your collection", but I'm actually aiming to do it - so I need to be wary of adding too many more titles. (Especially since it'll take me well over a decade to play through everything I already have just a single time haha.)

I have been slowly pairing down my game collection for a little while now to focus on arcade stuff.

In terms of arcade cabinets, I have 20 now. One is a playchoice, I think I have 12 carts for that. I have tons of boards and monitors these days but I don't count that really. If you wanna see what I have, my VAPS is up to date (except for congorilla, I forgot to add that): https://www.arcade-museum.com/members/member_detail.php?member_id=486462

Otherwise, I have about 20 games for each nintendo console except for NES which is closer to 80ish these days.

Okay here's what I have. I'm pretty sure I have some homebrew and other items that somehow didn't make it onto the list, then again the copied PlayStation stuff is on here (any probably could be removed). Also am pretty sure I have about 100 SFC CIB titles that I never bothered to document, so with those things accounted / not accounted for, the number at the bottom is more or less correct.

@fcgamer bro do you store famicom games in like your walls and shit? I though apartments/housing in Taiwan is like very small and minimal?

My apartment is quite big for the area, luckily, and the price is also quite a steal for the area. That being said, I'm in the same boat as @MegaMan52 as I have games and machines stashed away in cabinets in basically all rooms of the apartment, aside from the bathroom, though in the living room, aside from the television set up, there are not many games or anything on display.

I do have some really nice glass cabinets built into the walls in the living room, and I've often considered just using them exclusively to display the prime gaming stuff, boxing the rest up, and then turning the current game room (which is quite small) into an office area. The only problem with that is I really hate the idea of people possibly defining me by my games, whenever I host parties or invite friends / dates / family over. It's certainly a part of my life, and it's certainly not something I am ashamed of, but at the same time feeling like I have to "explain" it or "justify" it anytime a non-game collector is over doesn't sound very fun, especially when my actual time playing games and the like is quite limited.

Funny this topic came up. As I get closer to death my wife is getting more insistent I sell it all ( just hate to sell things; especially to collectors). I decided to put together an excel sheet of it all. I only collect CIB and 99% of my collection is CIB. I also collect box variants so I have multiple copies of the same game with different boxes (Gameboy GBC GBA and DS mainly for variants).

Ya know I've had Atari stuff (not a lot, but a heavy sixer and maybe 30 loose games) for many many years but since I don't actively collect it, haven't added it to my count. Next year's list I'm gonna add it and hopefully a little more Atari since it was my first console experience along with the 800xl computer, thanks dad. 🙂

This is a really interesting point and I'm curious how others feel. I would assume most of us are not ashamed, but we may not want to be judged or labeled by others due to our collections.

Personally, I feel like this is who I am and I let it all hang out. I have Donkey Kong, Mario, Zelda and more stuff behind me in my Zoom background (I work from home and take lots of meetings). I play Dungeons & Dragons. I love having my game collection on display, and I love showing anyone my shelves (although they probably are not as excited about my DK Jr. Math as I am). Games are meant to be displayed 🤣 (jk)

I know some folks do not want to show off their collection to people due to safety concerns (lot of value there).

And I believe @fcgamer that you play music, work, enjoy food...games are just a small part of who you are and not one thing defines you. I have plenty of other hobbies as well.

Also, the people who come over to your place may have garages full of games and will just throw them away because they had no clue you would be interested in it. I tell everyone I know for that reason.

But I do hear you.

At this point in my life, IDGAF, this is me. And I celebrate other people's passion, if it makes you happy then have at it!

For context, I have built in shelves at the back of my basement that holds my collection and most people that come over never even ask or acknowledge it besides, "Damn that's a lot of games. Remember playing xyz?".

I don't really care what people who don't share my hobby think so I don't need to have it front and center in my house to invite people who don't know or care about my hobby to provoke a conversation. In my experience, most conversation with non collectors go in a couple directions. 1) it's space 2) it's money or 3) it's useless. After you have this conversation a ton of times, it becomes tiring.

So since I don't care what people think, I don't provoke their responses by putting my games front and center - and my wife wouldn't have it lol. In the living room I have a Xbox Series X with the OEM Star Field wrap with the Star Field controller under the TV and my HDMI N64 above that. Those alone have been enough to spark any other closeted gamer or collector to start asking questions.

I definitely see your point. And I would imagine it depends on:

a.  How large a collection you have

b.  Where it is located in your place.

c.  How many guests come to your house

d.  How much you have spent on certain items and willingness to disclose that

I have a small collection and a small amount of guests so it doesn't bother me too much, but I could see where it would become tiresome to talk about!

I don't have a lot of guests and when I did they didn't really see my collection (it's in a somewhat tucked away area). Unless someone saw the arcade games and wandered over this way, they wouldn't normally have a reason to come by my game room.

However, I have definitely experienced that conversation, when I'm telling someone (at work, or otherwise) about something I'm excited to have bought, or looking to buy, or whatever. Often times the price will come up and there's an awkward conversation about why I spent all this money on a video game when it's a down payment on a car. It's not necessarily a judgment conversation, but it's definitely a shock to most people.

I know a lot of people on here tend to be thriftier and have hard limits of not spending over $100/game or whatever, but I've spent a fairly significant chunk of change on a few of the games I have and whenever I share that with friends/family/co-workers there's always some sticker shock of what I could've otherwise spent that money on.

I'm at like 3000-3500 games, and pretty happy with where it's at. Most of my collection budget goes towards displays, signs etc these days, but definitely happy with the state of the collection. Only picking up the most-wanted games these days, no room for filler. lol

For me it's more of a safety/not wanting to get robbed concern than anything else, but outside of my two game rooms with locks on the doors (and the arcade games in the basement), walking through the common areas of my house you wouldn't even know that I own a single game or console...

A bit less than 2000 I would guess (I should probably recount sometime soon) the two biggest components being in the NES and a sizable (~240) original Xbox collection.  I used RFgeneration to track everything but NES and then Google Sheets to keep track of my NES stuff.  Pretty happy with where I'm at, and now I really only look for a few rare NES variants and international versions of Super Mario Bros.  And I have hundreds of NES games I need to sell that I didn't include in the count haha.  Damn I have a lot to do.

I track everything in Excel which I keep saved on OneDrive so I can access it from my home computer or my phone if I'm in a game store.  Excel is great, because I don't have to worry about some types of games not being included in the list.  I also use it for tracking all of my consoles, controllers and accessories.  I also have a tab with a pivot table for tracking the total number of games along with how many are from each system.  I didn't open it this morning to get the specific number, but I know I'm a little north of 3,000 titles.  Approximately 25% of that is PS1.  The other biggest sets are PS3 and PS4.

In addition to my overall collection tracker in Excel, I also keep a second excel tracker specifically for PS1.  The second workbook is more of a checklist for the entire NA set, along with the breakdown between long box, black label jewel case, greatest hits, and collector's editions.  Since I track PS1 in two spreadsheets, I have a check figure set to the total game count to make sure there isn't a difference between the two lists (adding a game to one, but not the other).

I almost see my collection as different - I can't imagine someone "knowing me" but also trying to hide what I consider a huge part of my life. I host a lot of get togethers for local friends, and our joining factor is mostly that we collect video games (actually, most of those are past tense, but I digress).

Collecting has been such a big part of my life, that if people don't like my collection, they can GTFO of my house. Luckily, collecting hasn't just brought me video games, it's brought me so many great close friends that are friends for life, regardless of whether or not they continue to collect.

So in short, I do care what people think, because it's a good judge of whether or not I want them in my life.
