I'll get back to you if I ever get around to playing through every single heavy on both systems.  Without doing that, no one can give a compelling answer imo.

But from what I have played, it's something like this:

  1. Ocarina of Time
  2. Symphony of the Night
  3. Super Mario 64
  4. Final Fantasy Tactics
  5. Metal Gear Solid
  6. Star Fox 64
  7. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
  8. Majora's Mask
  9. Final Fantasy VII
  10. Resident Evil 2
  11. Silent Hill
  12. Vagrant Story
  13. Mario Kart 64
  14. Perfect Dark
  15. Final Fantasy IX
  16. Front Mission 3
  17. Banjo Kazooie
  18. Goldeneye

You tell me how that shakes out.

I love MGS and SOTN helped pave the way for the better Metroidvania games on the GBA & DS. FFVII is also a fantastic JRPG but you can play that on the PC so not an exclusive.

When you go up against Mario 64, Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, OoT, Banjo Kazooie, Starfox 64, Paper Mario and Conkers it’s really a no brainer. N64 all the way.

I feel that Goldeneye and Perfect Dark belonged on the list back in the era, but due to framerate, textures and how far the FPS genre has come, they haven’t aged well. I don’t think I can play them anymore.

I beat Conkers back in the day. Don’t remember it being particularly great. Maybe compared to other N64 titles it was very developed, but compared to other games on PS1 PS2 and Dreamcast that had already come out by then, it was ‘ok’. I liked Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 way better than Conker

Also, why would you include a sports game on a top 10 list? Do people play outdated sports games other than Tecmo Bowl

I'm obviously biased being an N64 kid but I thought N64 and it wasn't even close. The difference was that PS1 had a much deeper library where N64 was top heavy.  But if you limited it to top 10 games only I'd rather have the N64 every time.

Ironically enough I asked for a PS1 in Christmas of 1996 assuming that N64 was sold out everywhere and would be tough to get at Christmas (and it was sold out).  Yet my parents somehow made it happen with SM64 and the rest is history.

May not have become a collector or NintendoAge member if it weren't for that pivotal moment, who knew!

I imagine I'm somewhat in the minority for the forum which generally favors Nintendo, but I prefer PS1 over N64 by a very very significant margin.  Now, some of the great N64 games are awesome and I have a lot of nostalgia for them, but the great PS1 games like Symphony of the Night and Metal Gear Solid, are much higher in my personal list than the N64 games.

Both systems are fun and have good games.  Overall, I think PS1 has FAR more games that I love, generally speaking, but I guess the thread is mainly about the "top 10" of each.

Any top 10 lists will be subjective, so it's hard to really compare in a group setting as there is no list everyone will agree on.

For me, games like Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time, are excellent.  I love them.  But SOTN and MGS are in a different league - again, just personally for me.

Additionally, I'm a big RPG person, and PS1 kills in that arena.

I haven't played a lot of the heavies for Playstation, but I have played a bunch of RPGs. My list is going to reflect that, which is why there is no SOTN or MGS on there. In no paticular order:

1. Final Fantasy 7

2. Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey

3. Chrono Cross

4. Tony Hawk Pro Skater

5. Lunar: Silver Star Story

6. Star Ocean:The Second Story

7. Crash Bandicoot

8. Crash Team Racing

9. Wwf Smackdown2

10. Lunar 2: Eternal Blue.

Twisted metal was really fun having deathmatches with my friends, as well as Coolboarders was real fun too, but I don't really remember a lot about them to make the list.

N64 is much easier for me to make. No thinking involved. Also in no paticular order.

1. Ocarina of Time

2. Mario Kart 64

3. Diddy Kong Racing

4. Goldeneye

5. WaveMaker 64

6. 1080

7. Cruisn USA

8. No Mercy

9. Conkers Bad Fur Day

10. Mario 64
