  1. Dragon Fighter is obscure? You're killing me
  2. I'm going to take a good guess and say that if you spent 2 hours on one level, you probably got a game over more than a few times. Maybe that's why people say it's difficult?
  3. Still trying to understand the theme of this thread
  4. When you're rolling, you can't take damage. When someone attacks you and you are familiar enough with their attack animation to know how it will play out, roll into their attack with correct timing, so you can counterattack immediately afterwards. This is really important for an early boss which will gate off the rest of the game until you get a good feeling for this.
  5. Definitely resist the urge to spoil yourself at this point! So that trip to the esper gate wasn't what you expected, but the game is gonna surprise you eventually. Honestly, just stay completely off guides until that point (and ideally a while after). FF6 is pretty straight forward and whenever you need to go somewhere specific to progress the story, the game always tells you quite clearly what it is you need to do, so I don't really think relying on a guide should be necessary at all. If you have any questions, better to ask here instead.
  6. This is the most bootleg looking NES cart I've seen in a while. There are no logos on the label, the image is stretched horizontally, and the paper itself looks like a photocopy. I'm curious what about it makes you think it could be legit?
  7. I rarely buy NES games anymore, because I basically have everything I want. "The complete set" as they say, except across all regions, and without all the garbage shovelware. There's only a handful of the more spicy titles left that I still don't own - Cowboy Kid, Young Indiana Jones, Over Horizon, Cosmo Police Galivan and a few I don't really remember. But some times there are games I just didn't consider previously, for various reasons. The Ultima series, of course, is mostly at home on PC platforms, with the console versions being massively simplified - "dumbed down" even. On paper that's not really ideal for a series that's notable specifically for its complex underlying systems. Ultima 4, however is a game that's often highlighted as one of the better NES RPGs, and I think most people would tell you that this game and the original PC/Apple2 version are two entirely different games, and I feel like my exploration of the NES library isn't really complete unless I've played it. Playing it without playing any of the PC Ultima games beforehand does feel kind of dirty though. This is also one of those annoying games that aren't particularly "expensive" as just a single cartridge, but which are only available as an import - so with shipping and customs and everything, it ends up costing three times as much, more expensive than any modern PS5 game would have been And I feel like I'm gonna miss the manual for this one particularly.
  8. If you rely on the Contra code to get through the game, and wish you could get more than 30 minutes out of it, there's a really simple cure for that. Practice beating the game without cheat codes and without continuing
  9. Comix Zone isn't even good. The question is whether Splatterhouse 2 is
  10. Agreed. All the games are great, but 4 is where I felt the MM series really coming together in a single flawless package!
  11. @Gloves arguing the "moral rights to pirate" is a completely different subject that's never gonna end well anyway
  12. It's not really DLC. Like you said, it's already included in the physical game, and doesn't actually require any additional purchase. If the game did have day 1 DLC, I don't think the fact that other games also have that should excuse it. It's always scummy, and should be criticised every time it happens.
  13. Oh, this game is on my backlog list for 2024, so I'd love to participate. I guess the contest is over already?
  14. Marble Madness without a trackball sounds like something that just wouldn't work, but I've heard people speaking really favourably about tengen's MegaDrive port as well. Haven't heard that much about the NES port before.
  15. This game apparently has several levels of "completion", some of them seemingly just to waste your time. I honestly wish it didn't, because gong for the optional challenges is generally what makes this series fun,and that's true for crash 4 as well.
  16. Crash Bandicoot 4 is one of those games that you think you're done with and then it goes on for another 180 hours. What the hell was going through the heads of the people who made this. I'm lagging behind on my backlog now
  17. Have you ever tried Super Burger Time? Sounds like a similar deal.
  18. A rare Never/Never from me. I actually bought the game, expecting to play it some time. But I've become increasingly jaded with these types of games and David Cage in general... I feel fairly certain that it's not a game that'll realistically ever enter the rotation at this point
  19. Busy with other games, so only played around on the first two stages. I try to support any promising looking homebrew, but I'd say so far Sam's Journey has been a very positive surprise regardless! Easily in the upper echelon of NES homebrews. I'm not a big fan of C64 games, but I do love the C64 look, right down to the music and color palette. And even the attract mode is a loving callback to the C64/Amiga era of European video games. I watched some footage from the C64 version, and obviously the NES one seems to mimick it very closely, just with somewhat more detailed graphics. The platforming and enemy design so far feels a bit pedestrian, but where the game really shines is how cleverly the secret collectibles are hidden, making good use of thinking slightly outside the box, and maintaining the various skills you can pick up throughout, even on the very first stage finding 100% was very satisfying. The aggressive vertical scrolling was a bit uncomfortable to me at first, but I got used to it really fast. I do wish the various powerup pickups had had a different sprite indicating which power you get, instead of having to remember which similar color is which.
  20. I agree with one thing, that *is* outrageous. Completely different game, too, barely resembling the original. If it weren't for all the tedious puzzle elements it could have been a lot of fun. I wouldn't count it. But then I wouldn't count Zelda either, but that one definitely is a lot better.
  21. Can't wait to try this out tonight Really nice production quality too, the cardboard, manual, etc.
  22. Rocket Knight and Sor2 are both absolutely in the run for best megadrive game whatsoever
  23. It's a classic for a reason. It's often been framed as sort of an underdog cult classic, or a bad movie that's endured through its camp values and loving fanbase, but I'm not really sure it fully qualifies as either. Sure, Tim Curry probably(?) wasn't a big name until after he broke through with this role, but it's also got Susan Sarandon and Meat Loaf on its cast list. Richard O'Brien getting both the stage production and this movie made however probably still qualifies as quite an underdog story In general it's just a fun movie with memorable songs and setpieces, that's ultimately more than the sum of its parts. If nothing else it's an important piece of cultural history. I don't really feel like ever watching it again however. Maybe when my son gets old enough to appreciate it? 6/10
