  1. Just an update, I'm still working on this and I'm going to try to get it started this weekend, but if not, definitely the following weekend. It's going to be ten games for ten different consoles. Each game will be a different genre. I'm still working things out, but right now, the consoles will likely be: NES Super Nintendo Nintendo 64 Game Boy Game Boy Advance Sega Master System Sega Genesis PlayStation TurboGrafx-16 Atari 2600 I may swap out NES and/or PlayStation for Vectrex and/or PC. These contests were partially meant to be a break from the NES contests, so I'm not sure if I want to keep it in. As for PlayStation, I'm not familiar with how reliable emulation would be. Is that something that would be a problem? I decided against posting all the games and rules at once, so the games will still be played one week at a time. While I still like the idea of the games being played all at once, I'm thinking something like that would work better with higher participation than I'm expecting.
  2. I'd like the two I suggested, Atlantis no Nazo and Xexyz. Thanks!
  3. I don't know who that is in @spacepup's avatar, but I thought I'd try animating him. I know this is late and won't count for anything, but I'm okay with that. I wasn't going for bingo, I just wanted to try doing some pixel art again.
  4. @CMR Maybe that is the case. I haven't been able to get it started again since turning it off the other night. I'll pick up a multimeter at some point and post back here what I find out.
  5. Nice! That might be for the best. While I got a kick out of the game, it has a reputation for being poorly designed and overly difficult. I didn't think it was so bad once I got the hang of it, but I completely understand why it's not very well liked.
  6. Nice. I seem to recall you wanting to participate in the SMS ones more than you did, but didn't have the free time. I always encourage using original hardware and software, but I do allow emulation. TG16 is another one I'm considering and if I go the multi-platform route, a TG16 game would most likely be included.
  7. Thanks for the replies. It seems to be working now, but I'm not sure for how long. I must have powered it on and off at least 50 times, slightly adjusting it's position each time, on different SNES consoles, sometimes using a pass-through cart, sometimes just the bare PCB. It finally started up, bare PCB in a pass-through cart, on a model 2 console. I'm afraid to turn it off at this point until I finish the game! @CMR@FireHazard51 I didn't have a multimeter, so I had to track one down. I wound up borrowing one, which turned out not to work, which lead me to just try starting it up again tonight. If I got it to start up once, would that mean broken traces were not the issue? As for the white stuff, I'll have to take better pictures. I didn't notice it when I first took pictures, so I don't have a clear picture of it. Cleaning it with a pencil eraser is the first thing I did, but it didn't seem to help. @ProtonX It's Metal Warriors, which is why I'm quite interested in getting it working. @austin532 It looks like it could be a crack, but it doesn't seem to go all the way through, so I referred to it as a bend. If I (lightly) scratch it with my finger nail, it does get caught in the groove, so it' ether a deep scratch or a crack in the pins.
  8. I've been running a weekly contest for the past five years during the off-season of the NES weekly contests. I would always have it centered around a different console, the first two years being Sega Master System, then Game Boy, then Virtual Boy, and then Nintendo 64 last year. If there's sufficient interest, I'd like to run another contest this year. I was thinking of doing it a bit differently this year though. Instead of doing one console, each week would be a game for a different console and each game would be of a different genre. Alternatively, it could be genre specific contest, so every week would be a game from the same genre, but on a different console. Another variation to consider is an idea @Splain posted during the N64 contest: "What if there were some crazy meta-mechanic of presenting all 10 games/challenges right at the get-go, then allowing everyone to submit one score per week, whichever game they want. If the problem is that people don't have the same amount of playing time from one week to the next, then they can budget the time they DO have however they want to, and either submit a throwaway score for games they don't really want to sink into, slam out a good score for games they're already good at, save their time for games they want to spend more time on, etc. That would also keep people (to some degree) from hiding their score till the very end of the week; anything they've already submitted can't be improved upon, and everyone else can see what they're up against, bit by bit, as the weeks go on." I think that would be an interesting twist for a genre specific contest. Of course, I could just do another contest like I've done in the past. Maybe do PS1 this year? Sega Genesis? Sega Master System again? Game Boy again, but include Game Boy Color and Advance games as well? I would like to hear what other people think.
  9. I have this SNES cart that won't boot up. I've included some pictures of the board. It looks like there is some sort of scratch or bend along the contacts. There's also a blemish right above one of the contacts (visible in the second and third pictures). Also, the little metal prongs that connect to the ROM chip aren't shiny. They have some sort of white stuff on them. I'm assuming one (or multiple) of these things is causing the problem. Can anything be done to fix this cart? Thanks in advance.
  10. So, I've been thinking about starting another RPG. I've been playing a lot of PlayStation lately, but I've played most of the better PS1 RPGs already and wanted to try something new. This thread got me thinking about Earthbound again and that maybe it was finally time for me to give it a try. I dug it out last night and played for a bit. It's not really grabbing me, but I'll keep at it. It seems like something I could get into. Also pulled out Contra III, another game I never really gave a chance. Played it a bit and it seemed like it could be really fun, but I was a bit tired by that time for such an action-packed game. I'll surely play some more in the coming days. Aside from these two, I think there's a good chance I've played all the remaining games in the top ten. I know I've played five for sure. I think I know the other two, but it's possible I haven't been paying close enough attention and that they've already been ranked. If they wind up being games I haven't played, I think I'll make an effort to try them as well. I haven't posted in this topic much and haven't read through every entry of the rankings, but I have enjoyed skimming through every update.
  11. A few more ideas... The dancing gators from the opening of Revenge of the Gator: The break dancers from Bad Street Brawler: The ghosts from Time Soldiers: Something from Xexyz: Or Legacy of the Wizard:
  12. How about the enemies from Wrecking Crew? Or these guys from Alf? Or this thing from Atlantis No Nazo?
  13. Haha, I just found that out earlier this evening and was just about to post about it. Thanks for looking into it for me though! It's kinda weird how I found out. I was playing Jersey Devil and when you choose which block you want to save your game in, it shows all the other games saved on the memory card. For some reason, it was able to identify the game as Road Rash when my PS2 could not! Now I'm wondering if the names not displaying have something to do with the console. Maybe if I checked using an original PlayStation the names would have shown up? I'll have to dig out my old console sometime and check. Anyway, mysteries solved. Thanks to everyone who helped.
  14. That last screenshot for Final Fantasy II has been bugging me. I've played this game multiple times through and I don't remember there ever being a reference to espers in the dialog. I even checked a few videos of that scene from multiple versions of the game and the dialog in that screenshot doesn't match any of them. Which version of the game is that screenshot from?
  15. Yeah, I know they're not really related, but whenever I see mention of the Xenoblade games, it reminds me that I still have an unplayed copy of Xenosaga that's been laying around for nearly 20 years.
  16. I've had that problem for years. Actually, forget about wanting to play Xenoblade Chronicles 1, 2 and X before 3. I still want to play Xenosaga 1, 2, and 3 before even starting the Xenoblade series.
  17. I tried playing this one a few weeks ago. My initial impression was that this game could be kinda fun. The controls and camera didn't seem too bad, but after about 10 minutes, I really started to dislike it, for pretty much the same issues you described. I think the only reason it seemed promising at first was because I tried it out immediately after trying Bubsy 3D. Bubsy 3D has the most horrendous controls of any 3D platformer I've ever played. Even trying to line up Bubsy in front of a stationary object so I could collect it was a chore. After playing it for a minutes, I probably could have tried almost any other subpar game next and would have had a positive first impression.
  18. None of the new game announcements really interested me. This Direct really just reminded me that I still need to get around to playing Octopath Traveler, the Xenoblade games, the Fatal Frame games, the Bayonetta games, the Romancing SaGa games, and Breath of the Wild. The sequels all look like they could be fun, but it's hard to get too excited for them when I haven't gotten around to playing the originals.
  19. I'd like to see a new Wave Race, Star Fox, and/or F-Zero. Not expecting any of them though. As far as something that seems more likely, a Metroid Prime Trilogy with Splatoon style motion controls would be nice.
  20. There are some things that make the NES or SMS versions easier or harder than the other, but overall, I think the SMS version is a bit easier. It feels like the SMS version controls slightly better. Some of the enemies are a bit easier to deal with as well. The cobras don't spit fire and the bad eggs are speckled (in the NES version, the good and bad ones look the same). The SMS version doesn't have the fireball upgrade though, so you can't just destroy all the rocks and boulders. To play the final level in the SMS version, you have to collect all the dolls in the previous stages. In the NES version, the dolls are replaced with pots, which only give bonus points. You can access the final stage whether you collect them all or not. The SMS version is longer too, with 10 stages total, compared to 8 on NES. I've played very little of the arcade version so I can't comment on that one. I haven't played the Game Gear version, but I hear it's based on the SMS version.
  21. I figured out the second one. It's ESPN Extreme Games. That leaves just the third one.
  22. I was thinking it might be a game set in Japan or at least have significant Japanese influences. That's exactly what I was thinking right before I posted this topic. besides a Google DuckDuckGo search, I checked Game-Rave and The PlayStation Datacenter thinking that if anyone did it, it would be one of them. No problem. I like where the conversation is going. If this thread inspires the creation of such a database, I'd say it got better results than I had hoped!
  23. The World Ends With You has one of my Favorite RPG battle systems, which wouldn't be possible without a touch screen. The Switch version tried to make it work with motion controls, but it just didn't feel right to me. A few more that I think worked well: Electroplankton Elite Beat Agents/Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 1 & 2 Picross 3D WarioWare Touched! & DIY Star Fox Command (I was skeptical of the stylus controls in this one, but really got into it once I gave it a chance)
  24. That seems to be it. Thanks! Ha ha. I was looking for something like this and couldn't find it, but there it is as the first image in Google search results. That's what I get for having DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.
  25. Unfortunately, that wasn't it. I just tried loading from that memory card with Castlevania Chronicles and got nothing.
