Artists create more unique styles in 2D on top of the games being more timeless. Half of 3D games simply try to look as much like real life as possible, and anything but the cutting edge immediately looks old.

Million Dollar Mario...1.56M...What the..?
DefaultGen replied to BortLicensePlate's topic in Sealed & Graded Collecting
The sales prices and headlines always include the buyer’s premium because it doesn’t matter what the seller nets, just what the buyer is willing to pay. You wouldn’t have Pricecharting take out 10% for Ebay fees. -
Need help determining print run

The bottom one has a flap code SNS-MU-USA. One in Ebay completed of the top ones is SNS-MU-USA-2, so the bottom one is earlier. https://snescentral.com/box.php?id=0455&num=0&side=front -

The new breed of collectors thread
DefaultGen replied to LeatherRebel5150's topic in General Collecting Discussion
I just got this FB ad which made me think of this thread. Mix our custom cases with real boxes to make a collection look complete. Not the same thing as bootlegs but it's all about the appearances baby -
Just noticed another newcomer to the card world. No idea if they will grade video games like all the other up and comers. They're starting with a bang though, this Vmax Umbreon was graded SHEEEEEEEEEEESH, which a perfect grade. Great to see more competition. https://www.ebay.com/itm/384214378348

4/10, pretty much impossible to rate this game without putting it in historical context. There are times where it's great: I'm killing new dudes, I'm gaining levels, I'm finding new things. Then there's the rest of the game: walking back and forth in a line grinding to level up. Its simplicity lends to continuing playability though. An old RPG like Wizardry can bog you down with menus or Ultima can bog you down with archaic systems like food, where your character just permanently dies if you didn't buy enough. Dragon Quest is 35 years old and anyone who's ever played an RPG can pick it up and play without even reading a manual, so that's surely a point in its favor.

I back homebrew but have no reason to back a promising PC game or something that might not deliver. I have literally 10 billion game choices I can buy, I don’t need to prepay full price for hopes and dreams 3 years in advance.

The JRPG book is great. I love that import and history enthusiasts sites like HardcoreGaming101 document all this stuff that otherwise is lost on the English-speaking world but it's so great to have it actually published. It just feels so much more permanent. I also just got this Encyclopedia of Legendary RPG, which is a more of a reference-y one game per page type book but the JRPG book is more beautiful and informative (and much more English) Best thing I got recently was the PC-9821 release of Policenauts. I'm not an Japanese PC expert but it doesn't seem easy to find this at least. One big step closer to the Kojima set.

Starting a Game Historical / Preservation Society
DefaultGen replied to fcgamer's topic in Everything Else
Whatever you do locally I hope there's eventually a website with little exhibit pages like the Strong puts out. An actual organized catalog of all the weird old shit not enough people care to preserve would be awesome. I have like a 10 year old 100 page list of games you put out at some point, is that still the English speaking world's leading source in lists of unlicensed Chinese Famicom history? -
Silverspoon Fridays #1: Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario 64?
DefaultGen replied to SilverspoonGaming's topic in The Gauntlet
Excuse me, the market has spoken and this poll is moot. No one on the planet loves Mario 3 a million dollars worth but someone does Mario 64 -
9/10. I will take comic book movies that rip off classic films over green screens and explosions 10/10 times. One thing that made me cringe was when it’s revealed they play a little Saw montage to make it crystal clear for like 2 minutes longer than they need to because it’s a movie for dummies. But I still love it.

Apparently the winner bidder hasn’t paid (someone on FB contacted the seller). Could just be shenanigans. If anyone’s making big buying decisions based on sales prices, you are truly in the wild west these days.

A 9.4 SE sold for 30k on HA. Probably the highest grade one out there, for whatever it’s worth, but someone will pay crazy for the best thing, even a loose cart. One week later a reggo SE cart sells for 30k on Ebay. What’s going on man.

I grew up with Game Gear and Genesis but always knew NES/SNES/GB was way better so I'm not really a convert. I didn't convert but moreso was able to live the childhood I always wanted once I started earning money for myself.

Guinness WR For Most Consoles Owned Video (posted 6/7)
DefaultGen replied to RH's topic in General Collecting Discussion
You have to pay Guinness to show up and it’s apparently an arduous process. The current video game WR guy apparently had Guinness counting games for 8 days, and IIRC The Last Gamer didn’t just call Guinness back to retake the record because of the process itself (but I could be misremembering). I also think in the age of the internet “real records” like athletics are super easy to find, so Guinness focuses on all this oddball stuff. -
I liked it more than I remembered. I had to play through DKC1 again during VGS survivor. I’m all about validating my strong opinions but it’s a pretty great game.
