  1. How far removed from the original game can you be and still get a first appearance credit? Sorry if this has been debated before but my buddy @hyrulevyse pointed out that NES Donkey Kong Wata cases credit it as the first appearance of Mario and Donkey Kong, which is only true in the sense that the other, original version(s) of Donkey Kong were the first appearances. The first appearance of Mario would be the Donkey Kong in arcades of course. The first console game appearance would be on Colecovision if you really want to say a game that doesn't fit into a small plastic case doesn't "count". As a different example, NES versions of The Legend of Zelda say it's the first appearance of Link (first American appearance but let's pretend I'm not pedantic). However, the GBA re-release just says it's a port of the NES game and Link doesn't get a first appearance credit. This makes more sense to me personally and as far as I know is how comics usually work, e.g. Action Comics #1 says 1st Appearance Superman on the label, the Loot Crate reprint of Action Comics #1 does not and just says it's a reprint. I don't think one way of thinking is objectively correct, but do think it's a minor inconsistency that some ports get the credit and others don't. But people drop money on the first appearance thing so it matters at least somewhat. Thoughts? Should ports get first appearance credits, and over time should they stop getting those credits? Donkey Kong label (FWIW, Donkey Kong Classics does not get the credits ) Zelda NES (top) vs GBA (bottom) CGC Action Comics 1 (top) vs Reprint (bottom)
  2. The holes like 28 and 30? Another fun fact, those tiny holes aren't consistent between all releases (at least for Sega CD and Saturn). If we ever go far enough down the variant hole for that stuff, there might be correct and incorrect jewel case variants if anyone ever really bothers to document that. I learned that while trying to make replacement case hinges and use those tiny holes to snap into for a little bit of support but some cases have them in different spots or not at all.
  3. Sell it sealed. Let someone else worry about it.
  4. This Sonic 3 manual "tip" is hilarious
  5. I just read a book on Beanie Babies. Apparently in the mid/late 90s Beanie Babies was 10% of total Ebay traffic. Absolute bananas. I kind of like Beanie Babies. I don't understand the fake market, I know none of them are worth $10,000s, but you can get a Princess Bear or whatever for $5 and there are BINs on Ebay for $100,000 for no reason, I think it's novel to own as a fake collectible!
  6. Most recently memorable one is Gemini Man just disappearing in Mega Man 3 after I hit him once. Apparently one of the many known bugs in MM3, the most overrated Mega Man game.
  7. Don't do it! Stick to your principles! Think of the children! It does look slick though.
  8. Have you played the US version? It's brutal (as someone who isn't good at beat 'em ups). I don't know how different the JP version is.
  9. Altered Beast. This game is pretty terrible, but it's also only 8 minutes long. I have so much respect for a beat 'em up that knows beat 'em ups are only fun for 8 minutes.
  10. I can't get over the mind blowing feeling playing GTA3 for the first time, even if something like SA was so much more feature packed. It's like how BOTW is probably better than OOT, but I'm pretty much resigned to OOT being my favorite Zelda forever because how I felt playing it the first time.
  11. A game where you commit mass murder, theft, and gamble in 6 prostitute filled casinos, but opt in gay dialogue is what makes people complain, man. These people need to stick to Wisdom Tree.
  12. Interpolation was actually patched out of Hi-Def NES Not enough room in the FPGA after fixing other things.
  13. I have no issue with replacing PS jewel cases with like music CDs, but wouldn't replace them with lower quality modern jewel cases. Same as Sega CD cases, I replace them with cheap Sega games, not modern ones. Some guy on Reddit has a bunch of details on modern jewel cases, all of which are apparently cheaper than original 90s jewel cases: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamecollecting/comments/36vkch/where_to_find_high_quality_replacement_ps1_jewel/ I'm sure I have a copy of Spec Ops or something with an incorrect jewel case and will never notice, but I'm not going to intentionally swap out my games with incorrect jewel cases if I can help it.
  14. I think it's mostly because they age well and are infinitely replayable, similar to how RPGs are usually this expensive, evergreen thing because they're mostly stories. It's also an easy genre for adults with limited time and the people who play shooters seem to hold onto them, at least from what I've seen. I've never seen anyone post their platformer collection or FPS collection, I've seen lots of shooter collections. For imports it's definitely just demand. People pick a console they know nothing about like PC-Engine or JP Saturn and the first thing they do is look for shooters because they know their English speaking ass can play them.
  15. Just imagine how many boxes get crushed into bubble mailers every single day alone, let alone all the minor wear you're talking about. There's millions of games on Ebay. If you are condition OCD, the earlier you were in this hobby the better.
  16. I like SM64 the best. The non-linear 3D world is my favorite style of Mario game and I still think that one's the best. Not that Mario is often imitated well, but there are lots of other 2D platformers I enjoy, but almost no one gets the 3D platforming formula down like Mario 64.
  17. It is the only Mega Man game Wikipedia considers best enough to be on their best list of the best. Not even Mega Man X makes it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_video_games_considered_the_best
  18. Night Trap on PC has no manual It doesn't even have a cardboard insert, it's just the jewel case rattling around a giant box. Not that anyone cares about LRG Night Trap on PC though.
  19. I would skew towards the simpler game being "greater" personally. Tetris will probably be on top of puzzle games for a long time. If BOTW2 fixes all the little things in BOTW and has a better framerate, better cooking system, and (imo) harder dungeons, it could essentially supplant BOTW. This happened with Uncharted. UC1 came out, everyone thought it was the bees knees, then UC2 completely polished every little thing, and now people look at UC1 like it's some kind of archaic wreck even though it's still amazing. Since there isn't really much in Tetris that can be fixed, an entire paradigm shift would be required to beat it.
  20. SMB3 has no save feature because it's so great that you should experience its entire greatness every time you put it in.
  21. Same reason Beanie Babies are retired. Artificially limiting production creates FOMO. If they sell 2000 copies of some anime game, few people would care that it's scarce secondhand. If they artificially limit it to 2000 and advertise that, everyone knows it will be "scarce" (big quotes) secondhand and people who otherwise don't care about the game might buy it to keep it sealed. Many of the big LRG games are unrestricted preorders now so the artificial scarcity isn't too exciting, at least IMO. Or the limited print run is spread out over like 4 different SKUs to mask how big the print run actually is. When they have artificially-limited, exclusive, well reviewed games, which is pretty rare, I think it's interesting to own a copy. Multiplatform games, meh, I can always find it somewhere or on the next console it comes out on.
  22. There's lots of choices. I usually think of Super Mario Bros., Doom, and Grand Theft Auto III if I had to pick a top 3. Minecraft would be a solid pick too. I think Doom is in a sweet spot of importance from a gameplay and technical perspective as well as holding up super well over time.
  23. I know Spook-o-Tron works in the Nt (because I complained about Virtual Boy controller compatibility, lol). To be fair, if there's a software way to turn off Four Score on the Nt, the Virtual Boy controller should work.
  24. Yeah, but so many games try to imitate or be inspired by classics are come across as clones or just not quite as "great" in the importance sense. I'm definitely excited for BG3. Larian definitely 'gets it' when it comes to quest design and doesn't just give you ignorable text and make you follow quest markers to something you have to click to win.
  25. As far as I can glean (because I don't have one) the mini is better than the original in terms of compatibility, or at least I haven't seen many complaints and I know it sold a lot better. That's funny because the whole reason I bought the original was because it has original Famicom chips so I assumed it was essentially the same as a real Famicom, but them's the breaks.
