Just a random thought and I’m not sure if it’s been properly defined...

is gaming considered a sport?

I mean, you use your muscles, you need quick reflexes, you can break a sweat, your brain is constantly thinking of ways to win...those are just  some of the similarities.

I might need to check on the dictionary to see what “sport” actually means. Until then, what do you guys think?

Yeah, e-sports guys practice for intolerable hours then have to retire in their 20s because they physically aren't as good as the younger guys anymore. That's why every pro team looks like a high school D&D club.

I chose maybe because it CAN be, but isn’t always.  The folks who do it professionally, who train in a similar fashion as pro athletes, yeah, they’re playing it at a sporting event level.  Most of us sitting on our couches, regardless of how good we are?  Not so much.  The definition of the term just mentions physical exertion, but it doesn’t specify to what degree, so I believe that people who have trained their reflexes, reaction times, etc., to the Nth degree aren’t just playing a game as part of a hobby anymore, the same way that some athletes rise to televised event levels versus just playing softball with a bunch of relatively inactive folks they work with.

I thought that's why golfers had to walk in the pros, because without walking the course there isn't enough physical activity to justify it being a sport.

So if you want to make gaming a sport, mandate walking on a treadmill while you're rushing B.

It's a game. Literally. That's the cross point. Football contests are called games. So are rounds of checkers or hands of poker.

Is Candyland a sport? It's a game that happens in the physical realm. Is pinball a sport? It requires real-time reaction to play. What about gambling? What about riding horses vs betting on them?

No, I don't consider video games to be a sport.

Sure, why not? If poker, magic the gathering, and cornhole can be sporting enough to be featured on ESPN at one time or another, why not video games?

They're just hurting for content though. Is [whatever is on MTV now] music?

Yup, in the case of competitive e-sports like Counter-Strike and League of Legends and all that stuff, definitely. In general, no, I wouldn't consider games sports, but under certain circumstances they absolutely can be sports.

Not trying to be a smartass.  I genuinely want to know.  What makes Counter Strike and League of Legends a sport?  Is competitive Tetris a sport?  How about that time I won $200 in a Tekken competition?

Teams full of people who practice for ridiculous amounts of time and who are absurdly skilled at what they do, massive events tons and tons of people tune in to, big cash prizes for the winners, a few really well known names on each team, live commentators reacting to and breaking down everything that's going on during any given game... obviously they're not on the same scale as usual sporting events, that goes without saying, but they've got pretty much everything normal sporting events have other than the physical exertion.
