lol @RpgCollector, putting that damn carrot out there for us to go WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

any proof of the -2??

I have no documentation on that one at all.

2021 and Oak Island again.

Sorry not cart -2, box -2. All the GB Final Fantasy’s have 3 box releases, but only 2 cart releases. The -1 and -2 boxes both come with the -1 cart.

here is some food for thought when thinking of the -2 and the late stage game releases.

The release of the Game Boy Color also sparked re-releases of certain games including Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. These 'new' titles often were followed by the letters DX, which stood for Deluxe, hinting that there may be some improvements.

They're very up-front about those games having additional content, including color palettes for the GBC. Zelda DX, Tetris DX, R-Type DX, etc

here is more info for the case of the -2 and the E variant boxes(possibly the pixelated/Solid E carts).  we know that the E over took the KA in late 98 so the carts may not match the boxes but it is something to look and think about them. (info had to be given way in advance for the catalog to be ready before Christmas).

@RpgCollector, can you confirm the E boxes below.  i have not looked at e::y yet.  will look later today.

I've been collecting all the original Link's Awakening releases for about 10 years now and always wondered where the player's choice 'E' rated cart came from and I finally got closure!

@0xDEAFC0DE @RH I bought one CIB recently and the seller said he was the original owner. Just like @bluebomber's copy, mine also came with a -1 box and -3 manual. For a long time I thought this might have been bundled with the Ice Blue game boy pocket, but never saw them together. I also happened to pick up another one with a -3 manual, but -1 cart about a year ago.

After this find, it is obvious that the -2 manual came with a -1 box, we just need to figure out the date on the box. I do have the -2 manual with date 980302, unfortunately I didn't get it CIB, but will keep looking!

My -3 manual that came with the -1 cart has a date of 980724 and the -1 box has a date of 980728. Unfortunately, I didn't open the cart and I don't have it with me, I can probably check this sometime in May haha.

My -3 manual that came with the -3 cart has a date of 980820 and the -1 box has a date of 980819. Cart says 9818B, is that the 18th week of 1998 or what? EDIT: Looks like battery has a date "98 06".

I'm pretty sure the -2 cart only came bundled with the Ice Blue GBP and I don't really think an 'E' rated "-2" box exist, but let me know if you see it pop up.

Pics of the 'E' rated -3 cart CIB:

@rondy ah, so you were the one who bought that CIB. I was the underbidder, so sorry for bidding you up so high. What you've posted all seems correct. I'm 95% sure that the -2 cart only came with the gameboy pocket bundle (hence why it's not player's choice). I asked the seller for pictures of the datecodes on the box and manual myself and I also came to the conclusion that a box with an E rating doesn't exist. Looking at your cart, the ROM chip (bottom right) has a datecode of 9834 (34th week of 1998 or the week of Aug 16) which matches my cart only -3 cart.

Ah! No worries, it wasn't that bad and I'm sorry for out bidding you. I did notice the seller added a photo of the date on the box and thought, "oh shit, someone is really interested in this variant too" lol

Is this one of you guys?  Whats your guys opinion on the value of this set. I kind of put the DMG set around 1000, at least pre covid prices and most of the ones I've been picking up lately seem to back around that range. My last 4 (dkl, tetris attack, baseball one, wario land), I've picked up for $350 total.

My estimates for the others

Kirbys dreamland 2 $100-150

Wario blast $75

Kirby block ball $75

Killer instinct $200-$300

Donkey kong land 2 $100-$150

The gameboy color set seems to be worth less in my opinion and this one is missing hamtaro. So, it seems the starting bid of 2500 is a little high. It is cool to see them all in one listing though.

ok box guys please explain the date stamps here.......

1.thumb.jpg.4d033100e13c595a641dee49a82bd503.jpg

There were more than 20 reprints of SML for the GB and 8 box variants.
The first 3 had no date codes (Green pics Warranty info only, Green pics with warranty/for sale and use, normal pics with same warranty/for sale and use as 2nd green pics box) No way to tell how many print runs for each.
Then the 4th box change added for sale in Mexico and had a date code (at least 2 printings with this box).
5th change is TM to (R) box and was -1 ( at least 4 prints of this box).
6th change is warranty info change and was -2 box (at least 3 print runs)
7th is the players choice change -3 box. (At least 3 print runs of the -5 manual, 1 of the -6 manual and 4 runs of the -7 manual).
The 8th and last is the super rare black E -4 release, only 1 print run. So after the first 3 variants there are tons of print runs of each change. Over 18 million copies of SML were sold. That is a lot of print runs, LOL

That set looks like a mix. Manuals don’t match either. I only have 2 Zelda CIB. Regular and PC. Tons of print runs for that game also.

All the Black E PC games have about the same box date codes:

SML - 991117
SML2 - 991117
DKL - 991119
DKL2 - 991119

Looks like they were all sold around November/December 1999. I am still in awe in just seeing that my mockup (which I made in July) was correct. I was expecting the -2 SML1 cart to come in the previous KA rated box, much like how one of the USA variants of SM64 came in a box that didn't match the cartridge. Very interesting stuff.
