What is your favorite system/generation to collect for, and why?

For me it is definitely PlayStation - specifically, PlayStation 2 is probably my favorite console of all time.  I definitely have MUCH appreciation and love for NES, SNES, and plenty of other systems, and there will always be a special place in my heart for those games and those glory days.

But when I really sit back and think about not only my personal collection, but also a system with tons of games that I absolutely loved, it would have to be PlayStation 2.  I'll add that I also fell in love with many PlayStation games as well - there are just tons of great classics that I thought were fantastic.

I was always a huge RPG fan, and PlayStation (all generations) has had frankly a CRAZY amount of great RPGs.  There are tons of great PS exclusives as well.

There is a PlayStation Collecting Club here (check it out here!), but I would encourage people to feel comfortable talking about all consoles, all genres, in various places around here.  As OP mentioned, VGS isn't just about Nintendo.  Many of us love NES and Nintendo, but I would love to hear more about what other systems and games people are interested in.

NES for all the reasons: history, first games in my favorite franchises, favorite era of game design, and there's so much stuff to collect outside the walls of "normal" releases. If there isn't some shady underground ring of porno games on a console, I don't see how it could possibly be the best to collect for. Atari, NES, and 3DO are like the only platforms even in contention.

For me definetely NES and SNES just because I grew up with a NES (SNES later on). I did like certain PSX games as well but anything after that never really interested me. Quite stuck in the 2D era. Never really liked those N64 or GameCube games. PS2 didn't interest me either, though I did have all of the consoles for collection purposes.

The Japanese Sega Saturn library would like a word.

I found a copy of Beat ‘Em & Eat ‘Em in Vegas of all places. I didn’t get it because it was pricey and I couldn’t reasonably afford it after, you know, vacationing in Vegas for the week, so go ahead and take my collector card away.

Gah! there are sooooo many and seeing I dabble in imports more so than not I would have to say Famicom, PC Engine, Saturn, Ps1, Ps2 and a few others, mainly I go where the shmups are but am open to other genres and things we never seen in the US its like a whole different world hell I even have games that had a us release but I preferred the japan ones over them just for the artwork alone just makes it seem more "flashy" I suppose as I have taken disc based games, for example, like an rpg and taken the us discs and replaced the japan ones so its in a "cooler looking" case and I can still play it in English.

To answer the OP, Playstation for me, specifically the PS2 and PS4. I'm really enjoying seeing a resurgence of games in genres that were underrepresented on the PS3, like SHMUPS, puzzle games, and 2D sidescrollers. Even though the limited releases have made collecting the complete set neigh impossible, I do like seeing those types of games get physical releases again instead of only a digital one.

My area of concentration is Super Nintendo and PlayStation but I do have some NES and Sega Master System games I'm looking for too.

The NES and Sega Master System were the consoles that the family had and my first console that was all mine was a Super Nintendo.  Super Nintendo was something I always came back to and enjoyed and I got an itch to play some games I missed as a kid and it spun out of control when I decided to hunt down a full set.  It went from there and branched to other consoles I own.  I've always kept all my games so I started digging in closets and found everything except my TurboGrafx... I'm still hoping that shows up some day.

Nintendo 64 was the first console I got growing up.  Once that generation was over I got a PS2 but began shifting to PC.  Digital downloads and emulators became my go to.  The Wii U and 3ds brought me back.

The switch brought back a nostalgia I had for the N64 era Nintendo.  BOTW and Odyssey gave me the same feeling OOT and SM64 did back then.  Now I pick up mostly Switch games.  I have bought most all of the first party titles, a number of third party titles, and a smattering of physical indie titles.  Its been a good time watching that shelf fill in.

Honorable mention to Sega Saturn.  I never knew what it was growing up so exploring its catalog has been cool so far.  Hoping to pick up more imports and see what it has to offer.

The DS was probably my favorite to collect for. I got the system new in college, and had a good collection of games, but once prices started to tank then it became really fun. Picking up games at GameStop for $4-10 a pop knowing that they would shoot up was rewarding. I'd drive all over the Portland area checking stores, and even years later it was still easy to find diamonds in the rough since stores seemed to not be as aggressive with handheld prices. The sheer amount of RPGs meant that there was always something else to find, and play for that matter. I only have seventy something games for the system, but outside of maybe five I would say that the rest are still of interest, meaning that they are playable.

That is probably the last system that I will collect for like that, which is a sad passing. I mostly buy Switch these days, and not much of it at that, but they're all new and it isn't a hunt. NES homebrews too have fallen into the categories of either having to buy new, or with the old ones that I am missing they are well outside my budget. Both are still fun, but nothing like what collecting for the DS was like. I tried to reignite things with the 3DS, but stores never seem to have used games for the system in stock, and when they do the prices are much higher by comparison (still managed to grab Cave Story with the lenticular cover for $12 though!). All the more reason to play the games that I have on the shelf rather than spend time driving around town looking for stuff that is not there. If there is something that I really want to play or put on the shelf, buying it off of a member here or eBay is much easier, and nearly as rewarding.

The only answer I can honestly give is the everything before the PS3 and 360. Once games started needing DLC and updates, my interest evaporates in the collectibility of a whole generation. I still pick up CE's of some games, but I don't consider the game itself to be collectible anymore.

The two systems I collect for are Nes and Turbografx.  Nes was the first system I got into and turbo was the next system I had after the nes.  I have slowly been getting most of the turbo library but I been taking my time.  Other than these two I only collect certain games for other systems.

I do love collecting hardware and have almost all the systems prior to the DC.  With these I am fine using flash carts and have no desire to collect for them.

The first systems I played as a very young kid were my brother’s NES, SNES, and N64, and then eventually my GBC. But DS was what I played as a teenager so I’ve got a lot of nostalgia for it.
