  1. I don't think they are, actually - nowhere in this thread did I say anything to put down the collecting habits of this new sort of collector, aside from when I sarcastically offered up poseurs as an alternative term. As said earlier, there's nothing inherently wrong, look at divisions in music.
  2. Nah, I didn't notice that you could view more definitions. Either way, it would definitely be the secondary meaning, with animal overtones. Even half-breed has negative meanings. I mean, you could tell your friends that you're gonna "go home and mate with the wife tonight" too, but there are much better ways of wording it.
  3. Well that's certainly true, but humans are also related to primates, yet referring to humans as apes is not appropriate. In a similar manner, referring to collectors as breeds is inappropriate at best.
  4. Wrong. In English, the word "breed" is used specifically to animals.
  5. For the record, I also think it's ironically funny that the initial thread discussing this kind of collector made it 11 pages in, without anyone else stopping to think about the dehumanizing and offensive nature of calling such people a " new breed" of collectors
  6. I was being a bit facetious with that remark, no need to get your panties in a wad over it. My points still stand though: A. Having a different term to refer to this set of people (for better or worse) makes it easier to know what exactly we are talking about. Whether it's necessary or appropriate or not is a different matter entirely, but the (benign) basis for using the term would not be derogatory, rather used for the same reasons why people might refer to their style of music as "pop" or "hard rock" or "grunge" or "punk", as a way of getting everyone on the same page as what's being discussed. B. Referring to these people as a "new breed of collectors" is quite offensive in and of itself.
  7. Well to be quite frank about it, calling them the new "breed" of collectors is already offensive and dehumanizing at best I guess my point is, same objects, different objectives, so perhaps they all should be classified differently. Nothing wrong with jumping between groups, but too broad of an umbrella is like going into a music shop and having all styles mixed together, lol.
  8. Went to a few more places today and closed out the weekend with these goodies. Started off with some bootleg Mega Drive games. Beauty and the Beast is in the best of condition out of this set, the others have some water damage to the boxes. I grabbed a few other titles too, but I need to double check if I need them or not. For Mega Drive, I decided to collect bootlegs of the US/Euro exclusives, but they must be from the time period (no modern day versions), and they also must be boxed. I figured this is a fun way to add the western exclusives to my library, in addition to the legit Japanese games I have. I also found two more Chinese language version GBA games. I enjoy collecting these, there were also a lot of Sega Mega Drive games translated into Chinese. From a historical perspective, these are quite interesting. Modern Switch games and even console games come in a million languages for licensed products, making these sorts of bootlegs something that we just won't see anymore. Then there's a PlayStation gold finger cheat device, and a USB PlayStation 2 gun. More interesting though is the Crazy Hit game with controller. It's an unlicensed game made by UFO for the PlayStation, and it came bundled with a whac-a-mole style controller, somewhat reminiscent of the one Realtec did on Sega. Finally, I picked up this Dream Mahjong "thing". It seems to be a game, but I'm not entirely sure. There was a second item with a similarly ... Interesting box, though I left it sit, as it seemed to 100% be just a porn vcd. I'm all for collecting (and possibly preserving) old, bad Taiwanense porno mahjong games, but that's where I draw the line, I actually don't want a bunch of porn videos lying around my apartment. While we're at it though, anyone care to guess at the nationality of the people on the cover?
  9. I got on the bus tonight, usually the bus stops, unloads people, loads people, then continues onward. This time the driver refused to continue driving as someone brought a kiddie bike on board...the same set of parents who let their kid play with the the bike's horn while we were waiting for the bus to arrive. Only after ten minutes did they take the hint and get off the bus do that it would continue onward, honestly I want to be compensated for both time wasted and having to put up with ear pollution.
  10. In Taiwan the locals hire Vietnamese men to illegally do logging in the mountain areas. About six months ago, one was shot dead by an Aboriginal, who thought he was shooting at a bear...oops edit: Just to clarify, I don't think it's good when anyone dies. I just think the situation as a whole is stupid, on both sides.
  11. Congratulations! Great find! I think we'd get along quite nicely
  12. No need to feel upset just because you couldn't lug a crt upstairs and were afraid to ask the wife for help
  13. This could be the case, though I don't think my words were particularly caustic. In the Chiller thread, of course anything the good doctor said is already flagged as it went out of the gate, before I even saw the words; perhaps that is what happened here too.
  14. The bigger question in my mind is whether BuyAtari is still buying Atari...
  15. @matthughsonLast year I got some Cincinnati Chili and some really cool books relating to the chili as well as English dialects in the USA. You can make your lists quite open ended, I figure I've got so many games, to receive something like this was even more memorable and fun.
  16. I was thinking we could divide those interested in games into the following groups: Developers - those interested in the inner workings Collectors - those who try to track down original games Investors - those in it for the money, i.e. the watawtfbbqsealed crowd Gamers - those who actually focus on playing the games Amassers - new term for those that assemble large sets of modern fakes, i.e the new breed of collectors
  17. @GPXAlmost changed my post reaction from "agree" to "angry". I now know why I agreed with your post, it's because your post is basically the exact same content as what I had posted earlier, only to get chewed out for whilst you got a "thanks" reaction. Wtf? Furthermore, we're off topic once again, despite the affable Tanooki and myself both trying to steer it back on topic. Here I go again, for attempt three or four. In today's modern world, I think these modern reproductions do have a place, even if it's not our thing. It would be even better though if the original companies started doing them.
  18. For the record, today when I was out I pissed (discretely) in public two times.
  19. I've also kacked my pants about four times in my adult life, all of them being within the past ten years, in Taiwan. My brother managed to do it once over here too. Access to restrooms (and TP in those restrooms) is something I definitely don't take for granted anymore.
  20. I set out to go to visit my friend, who was going to be selling antiques at a local culture fair this weekend. Long story short, I thought I knew where the cultural fair was but I was wrong, so I decided to hit up some game shops and junk shops instead, as I slowly made my way back to my residence. First stop was a game shop near the train station. Grabbed some Xbox games and a few 360 games. The Xbox stuff I'm collecting for a project, as I'm trying to get all the Taiwanense Xbox releases, whereas the 360 games I thought looked, dare I say it, interesting. I might even make an attempt to get a 360 early next year for gaming... From there I moved on to two other game shops, but both of them had nothing of interest. The one has old games, but they're in the basement, which is locked up tighter than a bull's ass, and the other shop is still charging half price of original retail for its 360-era games. From there, I headed over to a junk shop. I found a licensed Bulbasaur plush, a licensed Tomb Raider mug, and a box of six taiwan gold medal beer glasses. The glasses, they're great for when I host beer tastings and what not. Over the years I've given some away, so it was great to get a few more. From there I grabbed a bite of barbecued deliciousness before heading to another nearby junk shop. It was in this last shop where I found my best finds for the day (imo), though they aren't game related. First was this pot. I'm going to use it to store my invoice lottery receipts. I think it looks quite nice anyways. My favourite bit was this pair of old spirits bottles though. Kin Men is an island controlled by the ROC (same guys who control Taiwan), they're known for their strong spirits. I thought these bottles look awesome, even if they were empty.
  21. I honestly never saw a Famiclone of that jungle green shade before. I'm hoping that there's a whole series to collect, similar to the N64 machines.
