    The Christmas of 98 I got my first console, a Game Boy Color. I played it non-stop and I think the rest of that school year I had more 'sick' days from school than all of the other years combined.

    I am a fan of effort and fun. To me it doesn't matter what people use to make their games. I appreciate the work and passion that goes into crafting a game and to me those matter more than using [insert anything here] engine.

    The only way I know for sure is the feel of the plastic vs an aftermarket shell. You could also check the quality of the stickers on the back. Some aftermarket shells have "Game Boy" on the battery cover in the wrong typeface.
