  1. One of the original great joining in! Welcome aboard Jason, it is nice to see you here man!
  2. Indeed, but your post was missing the 'stop being a pussy' part of first importance!
  3. Stop being a pussy, get both, problems solved!
  4. RC Pro Am II is one of my favorite NES game as well. The only time we used it in the contest was during the very first year of the contest (I suggested it at the time). For a long time we tried to stay away from pricier game for the contest, but now I'm very tempted to add it to this year schedule!
  5. It has always been called the VGS/NA NES Weekly Contest, Bea probably just mistyped it in the thread title. Edited!
  6. It's been an awfully long while since I saw you posting anything on NA, but it is always good to see a familiar 'face' back! Remember when we were harassing pats1717 to join NA in order to sell you mint games? LOL, Good old time. Welcome on VGS, I hope to see you hanging around from time to time man!
  7. I think that most of the people that use the term 'retro gamer' use 'retro' as a prefix (without knowing it?), and would need to say retrogamer to express the neologism they're trying to say. Yes, the word 'retro' as an adjective refers especially to the revival of styles and fashions of the past, but its use is closely linked with aesthetic in a somewhat artificial manner (it just need to 'look' like a past style or fashion). Also, it is quite an obvious fact that our linguistic community (which is something alive and ever morphing) is trying to coin the term 'retro gamer' as something that could be used as a noun (with the correct prefix uses = retrogamer), and the meaning of it should be dictated by what it refers to in our linguistic community and not the other way around by tagging the meaning of the adjective mainly linked to fashion. That's how new words become relevant, the meaning stems from the pragmatical use. So if 99% of the people use 'retrogamer' to refers to someone who actively play video games from a certain past, then it is what the word should mean. But we're apparently not there yet cause people still write it as if 'retro' was an adjective in the locution.
  8. I'm glad you enjoyed it man! The production as a whole is not first class, but everything works fine together. No big name actors, but the overall performance is solid from everyone. The story is excellent, I love comedies with a lot of 'faux-semblants'. You know, the rich father that accepts to play along for his daughter and has to let the homeless guy run his mansion in his face, lol. And what do these masks and role playing are for? The search of love, of truth, and how Christmas can reveal the humanity in everyone, whatever their class. We need a little faith in these values, at least once a year!
  9. Here we are, at the end of the line, with our 5 remaining heroes battling in a combo fight of Bubble Bobble and Circus Charlie for the title of the title, 2020 VGS NES Weekly Contest Champion! After a week of holding their cards, here are the results of the final round : Bubble Bobble 1st @bertsampson 1,950,890 2nd @Richardhead 1,041,940 3rd @Tablew/chairs 934,610 4th @0xDEAFC0DE 560,450 5th @Gaia Gensouki 401,590 Circus Charlie 1st @0xDEAFC0DE 87,790 2nd @bertsampson 84,870 3rd @Gaia Gensouki 81,140 4th @Richardhead 44,100 5th @Tablew/chairs 11,750 Total 1st @bertsampson 33 points 2nd @0xDEAFC0DE& @Richardhead 22 points 4th @Tablew/chairs 16 points 5th @Gaia Gensouki 9 points Congratulations to bertsampson for winning the 2020 VGS NES Weekly Contest Champion Title, making it a third consecutive champion title for Bert in the NES Weekly Contest. That's an incredible exploit that will be hardly repeated in the future. Since he started competing in the NES Weekly Contest, Bert has constantly proved that he was one of the best player to ever compete in it, and he showed us once again that he was on the top of the game! Way to go Champion! Let's also give a warm applause to our co-runner up for this year, 2016 Champion Richardhead and the new sensation 0xDEAFC0DE! Both had a wonderful tournament run, and only fell short to the mighty defending champion who brought his 'A' game for the final round. Richard is the only player breaking the million mark this week at Bubble Bobble along with Bert, and 0xDEAFC0DE is the only player that managed to beat the champion at a game in the final round by taking 1st place at Circus Charlie. Congratulations for the excellence of your performances in the year end tournament! Coming in 4th place is contest's elite player Tablew/chairs, who despite having difficulties to play one of the final round game, tried his best to achieve a score and gave all he got at Bubble Bobble. Table is always a contender whenever he's around, as last year final round prove it when he almost got the best out of Bert. He will be around in the years to come as well. Last of the final round, but not least of the 2020 season, Gaia Gensouki had his first deep run in a NES Weekly Contest tournament, which accounts for important experience that will help him doing even better in the future. He showed us many times how skilled he is at video games, and given a different roll of the dices may as well succeed to go all the way up any time soon! I will extend once again my gratitude to @BeaIank for all the great work she did for the contest this year! I can't say enough how important you are for the competition. Not so long ago, we had Bimmy Lee among us and we couldn't think for a minute that he would just vanish into thin air all at once. One of the last decision we took together was to reach out to you as soon as you declared to be out of the competition, and it is quite obvious now that we made the best choice! It is, and will always be a pleasure to work things out with you for the contest! Now, let's all profit from a well deserved break to enjoy the Holiday season and a new year to come. We'll all come back at it soon enough when the 2021 season kicks off! Thanks to everyone for making the VGS NES Weekly Contest well and alive in 2020!
  10. Man, a version with Harry Dean Stanton, I have to watch that later today! It is indeed a very good and funny short story from O. Henry, the master of the short story! Also, that's interesting to know that Vietnamese have/had to read some O. Henry in school.
  11. I love the 1952 version in O. Henry's Full House (it is the last story of the five), though the best adaptation in the lot is probably 'The Last Leaf'.
  12. I absolutely love The Shop Around the Corner, and like I said, this year I plan on watching The Bishop's Wife for the first time, I should have a good time with this one! Some I watched last year for the first time that pleased me a lot : It Happened on Fifth Avenue (1947) and Christmas in Connecticut (1945).
  13. I love watching classic Christmas movies during the Holiday season, this year I have a selection from the 30's-50's that I have never seen before (Holiday Affair, The Bishop's Wife, Remember the Night, and a few others), it should be fun. But my personal favorite is Mon Oncle Antoine (1971), considered one of the most important film ever made in Quebec (if not the most). You guys should give it a go, it is available for free on the NFB's website (Mostly French with English subtitles) : https://www.nfb.ca/film/mon_oncle_antoine_en/
  14. Second round of the VGS NES Weekly Contest was no joke as the players had to save our entire solar system from doom in a game of Gyruss! Rules had to be tweaked a little, but one thing was sure, our heroes had to beat the game in order to hope entering the final round. Here are the results of the second round : 1st @0xDEAFC0DE Game cleared, 1,048,550 2nd @bertsampson Game cleared, 942,300 3rd @Gaia Gensouki Game cleared, 852,900 4th @Tablew/chairs Game cleared, 807,150 5th @Richardhead Game cleared, 751,600 6th @Jeevan Game Cleared, 659,400 7th @mbd39 Stage 39, 815,150 8th @8bitdontquit Stage 39, 737,750 9th @ninjistar Stage 27, 546,950 10th @NESfiend Stage 19, 330,500 Congratulations to the top 5 players for earning their right to compete in the final round and have a chance to win it all in 2020! 0xDEAFC0DE, aka The Puzzler, made a strong statement this week by wining this shooter round and send the message that he's ready for the final fight! The main game of the final round being Bubble Bobble, an arcade game with some puzzle elements, could definitely play in his favor, though he allegedly admitted having never played it before. Bert, the two times defending champion, is probably pleased to see Bubble Bobble in the end round, as he is known to be quite skilled in pretty much any arcade type game. Gaia Gensouki played his geral leaderboard rank with a 3rd a place this week, and made it a logical entry to the final round as he definitely belong with the elite players around. Contest's veteran Tablew/chairs crushed phenom Jeevan's hope to get a final round spot in his first year playing in the contest, with a late Sunday 4th place score. But the story of the week most probably belong to Richie, former 2016 champion, who posted an early 751,600 cleared score that stood up good for 5th place, while self battling a Covid-19 infection. So far so good, not only Richard is ready for the final bout, but his health is getting better every day passing by. Best of luck to all of you for taking the crown by next Sunday! Naturally, if 5 players made it through, it also means that 5 players didn't make it. Let's take a moment to applaud their valiant last efforts in the NES Weekly Contest 2020 season. First off, Jeevan was so close of taking the 5th spot for the final round, as he was one of the 6 players who managed to clear the game this week, only the last in terms of score. He definitely proved to be a very serious competitor till the very end of his 2020 participation. While having not cleared the game, both Michael and 8bit clearly had a shot for either 4th or 5th place this week, as they managed to get high score with their stage 39 finish. It was only a matter of finding a way to beat the game and their scoring abilities would have changed drastically the final round matchup. Both are contest regulars and we know for sure they will be in it for the final stretch anytime soon in the future. And then we have the honest contributions of ninji and Nesfiend, that while not being on par with what it takes to go to the final round, had both very successful season in overall. For ninji, it is a return to the competition that is more than welcomed, as we all cherish when a player make a comeback in style. Nesfiend was only in his rookie year, and there's no doubt that he has a bright future ahead in our NES competition, as he will certainly turn in weekly wins at some point in time, sooner than later! Again, a big thank to everyone involved in the NES Weekly Contest, and let's make a lot of noise for the final round taking place till next Sunday, with some Bubble Bobble and Circus Charlie fun and follies!
  15. Technically, it starts immediately after the end of this round, but the thread will be up only by tomorrow morning.
  16. By all means, we'll strongly consider this option in case that Richie makes the final and is experiencing harsh symptoms from whatever he has, be it Covid or the flu or something else. Keep us updated on your health status Rich! This wouldn't be a big problem as we have an easy way to skip a week and still get the tournament done by December 20, just before Xmas week.
  17. First week of the tournament is now over! It was a quiet week, but still an important week for our 15 competitors facing each others at the unlicensed, yet classic video game, Alien Syndrome. Here's the result for the NES Weekly Contest 2020 Tournament's first round : 1st @Gaia Gensouki 1,108,500 2nd @Richardhead 981,800 3rd @bertsampson 800,900 4th @Tablew/chairs 793,700 5th @NESfiend 586,000 6th @0xDEAFC0DE545,700 7th @8bitdontquit 500,900 8th @mbd39 441,700 9th @Jeevan 395,600 10th @ninjistar383,800 11th @Ausden 359,100 12th @docile tapeworm 322,100 13th @SuperJimtendo 320,900 14th @JamesRobot 263,900 15th @TWarwick07 No score First, congratulations to players ranked from 10th to 1st place for making it to the second round of the tournament! Best of luck to all of you at Gyruss this coming week! Gaia Gensouki is the only player breaking the million mark and thus earning the win for the week, which is still a nice achievement during tournament's weeks. Let's also note the very strong start from Richie, former NES Weekly Contest 2016 champion, with a score slightly below the million mark. Geral leaderboard winner, Bert, still got a good start, though playing quite conservatively given his commitment to the Homebrew Contest finals. Hat tipped to Table for coming just behind Bert's score, which give us a foresight of rivalry that might wait for the final round to be settled down! Unfortunately, 5 of our heroes had to fail during this week, and we still want to thank them for playing in the tournament and in the contest throughout the year. Regular contestant Ausden took the bitter 11th place, only shy of 24kish points of a spot for the second round. Losing contest's talented shooter player docile tapeworm (aka skinnygrinny) is certainly an upset, especially after today's announcement of the next round shooter game. This round also saw the falling of two of the most talented artists of the NES Weekly Contest, SuperJimtendo and JamesRobot, who both gave us so much fun during the special Videomation contest! And last but not least, even with no score posted, we can say farewell to contest's veteran Twarwick07 for his commitment to the contest this year, in the hope to see him playing again in 2021. Thanks to everyone involved and see you all in the second round thread of the VGS NES Weekly Contest 2020 Tournament!
  18. Thanks for the heads up, @Richardhead! I will indulge myself in this traditional picture drawing.
  19. Final week of the regular season, everyone feels a little emotional, friends were made, rivalry ensued, insults were thrown, tips were shared, Kickle got drawn, and people farmed graveyard in G&G, what a ride! Last game of the season, but a first win for @PII! Congrats for taking the Ghosts & Goblins crown, you're now officially a G&G Great! Also thanks for running these loops test and shared results in the thread, this was very insightful to know that G&G can get as tough as Makaimura, @BeaIank's favorite iteration of the game. @bertsampsonhad the Action Charm in the back pocket of his jeans already (you're wearing jeans bert, right?), but still cared enough to take 2nd rank with a 315,600 score, probably to send a message before the 2020 tounament to Hooter's favorite client @Bearcat-Dougwho stands about 10k points behind for 3rd place. Honorable mention to the 100k club of this week, in their respective order : @NESfiend (158,000), @ninjistar (145,700), @8bitdontquit (141,500), @Tablew/chairs (131,900), @mbd39 (121,600) and @Gaia Gensouki (116,300). Special thanks to @Sumer for joining the NES Weekly fun, even in such a late state of action. We'll count on your participation for the 2021 season, but get in early this time around! You're still welcome to hang around during the tournament, don't miss that! There's also Bea's million points video run coming up, cause we can't let her stand by such a pathetic score of 942,300, get us the good Bea, get us THE GOOD! Finally, congratulations to our geral scoreboard leaders, each earning a Charm! 1st for Gold : bertsampson 266 points 2nd for Silver : 0xDEAFC0DE 189 points 3rd for Bronze : Gaia Gensouki 170 points Stay tuned for the upcoming details of the 2020 final tournament! Thanks to everyone making the NES Weekly contest well and alive!
  20. By all means, if you're more comfortable with the dagger, you can use it to farm the 1st level and use it for most of the game to be honest. Bea is a torch player and will recommend it every time she can, but it doesn't mean the dagger isn't a G&G good weapon.
  21. Some enemies drop them every once in a while, might be that? Plus the drop pattern is quite consistent, after a while you feel when you're about to get one dropped.
  22. Yes, only the best Canadians got the milk bags!
