List of Advertisements for Unreleased NES Games

This is a list of 100+ games that were advertised and featured in various magazines and catalogs to be released during the NES lifetime. Some were just mentioned as Coming Soon in ads for other games, while some came so close to release that cover features were printed for them. Many reviews came right after the Winter & Summer CES when publishers would show off their “upcoming” releases. If an advertisement came direct from the publisher it was included with only a mention of the title, but if it came from an article it was included if a screenshot or prototype box accompanied it. This was in order to make this list more visual and not just dozens of title mentions and rumors. There are also times when the journalist may have mistakenly claimed a game was upcoming for the NES when the publisher actually intended for a Game Boy release.

When it seems that the NES game mentioned was actually released under a different name I didn’t include it (meldac’s Darc Seed became Zombie Nation), but if the whole direction of the game was changed I did include it (Sunsoft’s The Terminator became Journey to Silius). All sources come from US or Canadian publications that were intended for release in the North American market. Games that were given a Famicom or PAL release, while also being advertised in North America, are listed at the end in sub-categories. Found prototypes are indicated in the last column where you can click for more information. Also included is a list of a few alternate covers for released NES games. Some look completely different, while some are just rough sketches put together for the purpose of advertisement. There are also a couple of games that were advertised by one publisher and released under another.

You can click on the name of the magazine for a link to the photo. Many thanks to this comprehensive list by Jeff Davidson from 2002 for help researching!

Nice list! I actually never knew of Terror of Tech Town, that game looks pretty cool.  I have some of these original ads(Hellraiser, Play for Cash Color Dreams, and Crossbow AGCI).  I think there was one more Hellraiser ad, but it was a pack-in in some Color Dreams releases.  IIRC, Wally Bear had an ad in a local newspaper too when it was still being published by AGCI.

Sqoon also was going to be published by Broderbund at one point.  There was an ad somewhere, I think it was a pack-in.

Great list!  I would suggest maybe making a separate section for those games that werent released in the US but do have a PAL release, like Mr. Gimmick, Crazyland, Hammerin' Harry, Beauty and the Beast etc

Just did it! Good idea. Maybe I'll also add ones that were originally released on the Famicom. But that list would take much longer.

Thanks!! Was the Hellraiser poster you're thinking of this one? I found an image of it and added it, but not a hi-res scan.

Sqoon was originally set to be published by Broderbund with a different cover art as well. It was advertised on one of their pack-ins. I'll get you the pic when I have time.

Or...was it?

Broderbund uses their logos in the games they published, but if you look at the boxart concept on that poster it shows Irems logo where Brøderbund’s should be.

My theory: Brøderbund was going to distribute it while Irem published it.

@Braveheart69 claims the poster is also found in Sqoon. I believe him, but Sqoon is one of the items permanently in my saved searches and I never see *any* with the insert. I hate advertising this as well, since it increases the chances of someone just throwing that insert in just to look more complete...but it also may bring them out of the woodwork so it’s a double edged sword.

I know there was at least a full box art mock up created for the unreleased Fun House that I owned years back.  With it getting that far, I would have assumed there would be at least some formal mention in an ad or magazine, but I can't say for sure.  Worth exploring I'd think.

Edit:  It was a VidPro card.  Not sure if that counts enough to make the list.

I was just reading about Fun House and a bunch of other prototypes you brought to light! You got Chuck Yeager dumped too right? I'm debating whether to include prototype boxes and VidPro cards to the list. I included a mock up box for NKOTB that was sold on eBay by the wife of an editor from EGM magazine. They said they apparently used it as a hockey puck at the office that's why it's so beat up lol. And I've found what seem to be legitimate front & backs for War on Wheels, Fun House and SimCity.

Edit: I added a bunch of Vidpros scanned by Frank Cifaldi at Lost Levels!

I checked it out on Wikipedia it claims "Although published in North America directly by Irem itself, technical support inquiries for the game was handled in this region by Broderbund since Irem didn't have an American branch at the time." They seem to have had some relationship with Irem in which they initially thought they would publish it or at least advertise it for Irem? I'm gonna include it in the list. Thanks @DoctorEncore!! You also helped me find another one, The Battlefields of Napoleon when searching for your insert. Which is on BRO-NES-US-1!

Some publishers seemed to have close relationships with each other like when Tengen published Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom after Mindscape. And you can also see in an advertisement on the list that Mindscape was intending to publish RoadRunner which Tengen ended up publishing.

They seem to have had some relationship with Irem in which they initially thought they would publish it or at least advertise it for Irem? I'm gonna include it in the list. Thanks @DoctorEncore!! You also helped me find another one, The Battlefields of Napoleon when searching for your insert. Which is on BRO-NES-US-1!

Some publishers seemed to have close relationships with each other like when Tengen published Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom after Mindscape. And you can also see in an advertisement on the list that Mindscape was intending to publish RoadRunner which Tengen ended up publishing.

I totally forgot about Battlefields of Napoleon. I always assumed that became L'Empereur but I never looked into it.

It seems to be from a Famicom release. I wanna make a sub-category for Japanese releases that were going to get localized but it's gonna take some time

Dear Phleo...
The Sqoon in my collection is dead mint and has only been opened 2 or 3 times tops as it was part of the B&B Heist famous post from NA days.  I still have all the pictures and as a reminder that guy bought the games, unsealed them, stuck them on a shelf, and never played them or did anything with them according to the executor of his estate who sold them to me.

Here you go, manual and poster both never opened, everything dead mint, shrink wrap still on the box...

Hawt as usual.

I absolutely believe you on this, and I sure as hell know one will never be opened.

The only way I can even fathom getting solid guess on this one particular title is if "OneUpped" accurately weighs their copy (VGA case and all) and then someone weighs a 100% CIB with, and without the BRO-NES-US poster, and an empty VGA case.

Even still, I wonder if there's enough variance in VGA case weight to offset an entire poster.
