I visited Maui around a decade ago when I gave a talk on my research -- it was amazing! First time in Hawaii, I could not believe how gorgeous and beautiful just everything was, including the people who were so kind. This is so sad -

I spoke to my colleague and friend who still lives on Maui, and fortunately he was allowed to return home, but the beautiful town of Lahaina is basically gone...

Okay, does the dude have to keel over in front of everybody?

I wish he would. Especially with how many people voting and raging for his party try to use Biden's age as a political cudgel to promote his opponent, a whopping 3 whole years younger.

Welp, Speaker of the House edition:

https://www.ft.com/content/6d12663b-237b-4c85-8018-87efd7c1ad2e

Kevin McCarthy’s position as Speaker of the House of Representatives was in peril on Tuesday after 11 Republicans voted to proceed with an effort to oust him and Democrats said they would not back him in the face of a Republican rebellion. In a crucial procedural vote on Tuesday afternoon, the House voted 218-208 to proceed with a challenge to McCarthy from Matt Gaetz, the firebrand Republican congressman from Florida who spearheaded the rebellion after the Speaker struck a deal with Democrats to avert a government shutdown over the weekend. The procedural vote sets the stage for a final vote later on Tuesday that is likely to see McCarthy removed as Speaker.

There's a subreddit called "Leopards ate my face", which is all about people supporting something that comes back to bite them in the ass. There's a couple of threads about McCarthy right now.

Ex-Trump lawyer Sidney Powell pleads guilty in Georgia election interference case

Powell was one of 19 defendants named in District Attorney Fani Willis’ indictment, which also charged former President Donald Trump.

This might be pretty significant. Georgia and Willis aren't just cutting deals to clear caseload and whatnot, they're out for blood and whatever Powell has to testify about can't be good for the rest of the defendants.

And another one bites the dust.

Trump co-defendant Kenneth Chesebro strikes plea deal with Georgia prosecutors

As jury selection was beginning, Judge McAfee said a deal had been negotiated.

Appearing before Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, Chesebro pleaded guilty to a felony count of conspiracy to commit filing false documents and agreed to testify in the case as part of the deal.

In other news, Jim Jordan keeps losing votes every round.

They don't want McCarthy, they don't want Scalise, they don't want Jordan, they don't want McHenry ... I'm surprised the party hasn't fractured completely.

Latest Speaker Nominee Ends Bid After Trump Criticism

Representative Tom Emmer dropped his bid for House speaker Tuesday after criticism from Donald Trump, becoming the third GOP nominee for the leadership post to be dragged down by seething divisions within the party.

The latest twist in the three-week saga to elect a speaker threatens to prolong a leadership vacuum that has prevented action on emergency aid to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan, and on funding to head off an impending mid-November US government shutdown.

Here's a fun fact for ya (or for you anti-Trumpers perhaps not-so-fun fact)...the Speaker of the House does NOT have to be one of the Representatives!

I can't imagine they'd actually be crazy enough to do that though...I mean if they can't agree on any of those other guys...

Oof, sorry but apparently it's against the rules for the Speaker to be indicted on a federal crime, so...

😬

"They" is a moving target.

Most Republicans probably wanted McCarthy. Guys like Gaetz, Boebert, and MTG just want to keep their name in the headlines, and don't give a shit whether we have a government shutdown.

BTW, a shutdown will likely affect a lot of benefits for people that need them. People on things like disability might have a harder time, especially if it lasts for months.

Yep, and that's the GOP's own rule, too.

Talk about a party of dysfunction.
