Quest4Nes | 376
Nah thats dumb. Accepting something doesnt mean you are for it. Not accepting it makes you an idiot since your "protest" doesnt change anything. Besides while i disagree with this completely its atleast a now thing not an institution forever thing. Someone accepting help doesnt mean they believe in a system of perpetual forever help. Thats the same garbage people say about social security if you want it. You paid in your whole life um yea id like that money back. It was mine and taken away by force. Sorry I want it back Edited March 20, 2020 by Quest4Nes

I’m being sarcastic dude. “How are you going to pay for that” is a common right wing response to any kind of progressive program. There is almost always a clear and thorough answer already out there, but it’s too many words for the trolls who say that. And the question is never asked for much bigger-ticket items like our excessive military spending. Thing is, those progressive programs are written with thoughtful and long term view in mind to foster improvements for quality of life in our society. Whereas just throwing money at everybody one time may win a popularity contest but doesn’t address anything long-term. It’s very hypocritical and short-sighted.

Link | 2,815
It’s not free. It’s using taxes for what they’re supposed to used for, public expenditures. It doesn’t make sense to approach that as opportunities for crony contractors and lobbyists out to suck off the government teat to enrich themselves, further when they are already rich. Toss a few dollars at the poor so they can eat and go to the doctor regularly instead of getting sick which then spreads to all of us or at least puts strain on emergency services. We need everybody to have life skills. When they don’t, they have more problems and it ripples out to all of us. The punitive approach to that does not work. You don’t beat a person into being better and more capable. You don’t remove resources, like education (can you understand this, math teacher??) and expect people to be able to make their way in life. I don’t know how else to tell you you should care about other people. Edited March 20, 2020 by Link

I wonder if temporarily businesses who normally sell and/or manufacture non-essential things might have to switch over to making/selling essential things like food, medical supplies and such? OptOut | 8,899
There we were having a lovely discussion about a global epidemic killing tens of thousands, ruining the economy for billions, and causing a previously unimaginable disruption to the supply of toilet paper, then someone HAD to bring politics into it... What a bunch of killjoys, sigh!

No need to waste your time with me. We are going on 40 years of Reagan’s greatest hit. Are you saying things have gotten better since then? I don’t think they have. We cut services, cut education, promote austerity, expect the private sector to pick up bits here and there if somebody’s philanthropy hobby favors it, get tough on crime, what do we have? More poverty, more prisoners, drug epidemic nationwide, multiple health crises worldwide, psychological issues more widespread, on and on. 50 minutes ago, Quest4Nes said: And that condescending math teacher line is why no one likes leftists. I’m asking if you, with your salary which is based on providing a service that is foundational for growing minds yet doesn’t directly produce profit, can understand why that type of operational model is conceptually important to grow our life as a nation and make the world a better place. lol at you calling anyone else smug and arrogant

I wonder if temporarily businesses who normally sell and/or manufacture non-essential things might have to switch over to making/selling essential things like food, medical supplies and such? I mean we did it for the WW2 effort, why not for the War on Coronavirus effort? Actually in WWII (once we got ramped up) we had enough production capacity (especially with the introduction of women into the work force) to meet both the war needs and most domestic needs more fully than we did. (Rubber was a big exception.) It was felt that by rationing things that really didn't need to be rationed that the populace would have better morale since they would perceive themselves as joining the effort by making sacrifices - and working hard to end the war. It also kept inflation under control since there was little to spend money on (and what goods there were generally had price controls). Many workers during the war managed to save a fair amount of money - which helped create the booming post war economy (once we had retooled.) (It also helped that we had started to crank out military goods for Lend Lease even before the war had started for us.) The biggest contribution* we made to WWII was the ability to crank out mass quantities of everything (including the Liberty ships to move those materials to all points overseas). Russia provided the bulk of the forces in Europe (and paid the price for it) but we provided much of the fuel, steel and many other things to them. Perhaps the most important thing we gave them were trucks (as prosaic as that may seem) - Detroit built them better than anyone else** (and in staggering numbers) and they were key to giving the Russians much needed mobility in a large land with poor roads and even poorer rail lines. One of the biggest problems we would face ramping up production of things (in any quantity) today is that the physical plants are mostly gone - some of the buildings may be there but they have deteriorated and most likely would have to be rebuilt from scratch. Plus new production equipment has to be made. We had existing surplus capacity at the start of WWII that was just lying fallow because of the depression and once retooled it was able to quickly kick into gear. *Not that the military forces we fielded weren't important - but we couldn't have defeated Germany and Japan on our own - so supplying our allies was also very important. **The Germans loved capturing our trucks - they never had enough of their own and the ones they did make weren't as good as ours - one thing the Germans never mastered during the war was the concept of a production line (which ensured not only more units (of whatever) produced but higher quality ones). fcgamer | 4,805
Panic buying has started in Taiwan! Here's the fruits of my panic-buying efforts (12 L of bottled water not shown). Definitely place the bag of cat food in the back as the most important in this lot.
fcgamer | 4,805
When everything kicked off in Taiwan the first time, the facilities producing masks installed more machines to up production. Likewise, several of the distilleries down south switched from making rice liquor to rubbing alcohol.
