Short review: An action platformer that plays like Ninja Gaiden mixed with Batman, with some first person action as well as some driving levels. The game also has a pretty involved story.

Fixed 2 bugs in the veil engine today. Neither were apparent til I tried to use the veil engine on a project other than Janus. The first bug was in the metasprite module's initialization subroutine and it manifested by crashing the game when no metasprites were in a scene. Here is a snippet containing the issue:

Quite regularly, after having played through a big meaty game, I like to jump to something more bite-sized rather than move onto the next big thing. It allows me the chance to dive into smaller experiences that would otherwise be overlooked while I knock out the big hitters in my backlog and I like having a break before tackling the next dozen-plus experience. Following my playthrough of FInal Fantasy VII Remake, Songbird Symphony

What secrets does my family hold? What kind of legacy will I leave behind once I have passed on? How much do I really know about my heritage? All these questions arose as I played through Giant Sparrow’s remarkable What Remains of Edith Finch. As is the case with a number of other so-called ‘walking simulators’, the story leaves you with plenty of food for thought long after you have put down the controller

Short review: I guess this qualifies as a karate game but I never once felt in control so it almost felt like I was watching a poorly animated 8-bit cartoon over and over until I was lucky enough to win.

I have seen all of the Indiana Jones movies, even the fourth one that everyone seems to want to forget ever happened. I watched them all just once, all in a row, probably 10 years ago or more by now. It was so long ago that I forgot pretty much everything from any of the movies, but not so long ago that I remembered that I enjoyed this one the most. That seems to fall in line with the consensus of the series. This movie had to have been well loved because the NES ended up with two video game

Hey, it’s another milestone post! Finally made it to #150! The milestones on the 50s have been pretty kind to me so far. Let’s recap. Game #50 was Dragon Warrior, which is a very nostalgic game from my childhood and a nice one for that spot on the list. Game #100 was Milon’s Secret Castle. While not the most classic title to remember, it was one I played a lot growing up. Plus, I got to beat the second loop for the first time which was nice. So, I was pretty excited to get to #150, only

Looking at how Minesweeper was finally brought to the Nintendo and what its development was like. Let's take a dive into this homebrew game that is much more than a port of a computer classic, but a game that stands on its own. The mine detection and disarming puzzle logic game, Unexploded Ordnance.

Greetings, all. We're back for part 2 of my riveting journey through the top 10 shoot 'em up games on the Sega Genesis. If you didn't catch part 1 which covers numbers 10 through 6, you can find it on the home page of my blog, or on the bottom of this page where it says “previous entry.” I'll reiterate here that the criteria of my top 10 is based on the North American releases for the Sega Genesis. I realize that there are many highly regarded shoot 'em up games which were released in foreign m
It’s been awhile since I’ve played a game that brought me to a point of real frustration and anger. I think as I’m getting older, I am mellowing out a little bit and I put up with a lot more in my gaming. I have to if I’m going to play all these NES games, and I also need to set a good example for my kids. Thankfully as I played this game alone late at night, I could vent my frustration a little. I didn’t go full out tantrum or anything, but I spent a fair amount of time visibly upset at thi
Over the years, I have come to realize that the shoot em up genre is among my favorite video game styles, and quite possibly my favorite. And while I enjoyed some of the earlier arcade games from the 80s which I would play whenever I came across a cabinet at the mall or pizza parlor or wherever, I fell in love with games such as Gradius, 1943 and Captain Skyhawk which I could play at home on my NES. But by the early 90s when I received a Sega Genesis for my birthday, my love for the genre explod
Shortly before the world descended into this virus-induced chaos, I took the family on a long-planned Disney vacation to Florida. We had an amazing time at the parks and whatnot, but naturally, as I'm wont to do when I'm somewhere away from my home town, I did a little google maps research and discovered a game shop that was within driving distance from the resort. And when the wife and kids were content in the pool one afternoon, I ducked out for a couple hours and hoped to get lucky.

NES Black Box games are always worth celebrating for being the fun launch titles that helped propel the NES to great success in the 1980s. I like to celebrate Gyromite both as a launch title and the introduction of the world to R.O.B. He was the gateway of the introduction to the NES in the North American market and we should be eternally grateful to him for that. Unfortunately, beyond his two launch games, he was relegated to closets gathering dust. I'm here as part of a micro-revival to pu
I've long considered the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game on the Nintendo to be my favorite of the series. The NES sequels are fun beat em ups, as are the Genesis and Super Nintendo games, but the first game is something entirely different. If you want to have a fun co-op experience with a buddy, you really can't go wrong with any of the beat em up games, but if you want to sit down by yourself and have a serious gaming session, the first Turtles game is the way to go.
