  1. Yes. If entering codes or such that give one an advantage that wasn't intended as part of the game, of course it's cheating. That is if you later consider that you beat the game, especially more so that if you go around bragging that you did when you cheated your way to the end. Now if simply having fun with some of said cheats, codes, whatever, that's fine, enjoy. I play everything on emulator now, that's all I have, so thank goodness for savestates because I rely on them for those issues like when suddenly my controller just ever so slightly comes out of the USB port and disconnects from the emulator (happens often), because most of the time the emulator even after I plug the controller back in refuses to identify it thus I have to completely go out of it and back in again, thus losing any progress, so I make sure to save every so often. I also create savestates for beginnings of stages or for every boss or major item found so that I have easy access to any part of a game at any given time I need it for whatever. But not for cheating, thus if I die I deal with it, if I lose completely I start all over again. Sometimes because of any kind of issues that could arise from a laptop from a blue screen error that forces the computer to restart or a damn update that I didn't ask for but they give me anyway and suddenly the moment I step away find everything I was working on was gone because the laptop restarted, yeah, shit like that has happened more than a few times. Savestates are a game saver. Sometimes use them as a form of a safe pause that if I were to walk away and take a break for a while, be it get something to eat, use the toilet, talk Snickers for a walk, whatever, I pause the game but also make a savestate just in case so I can guarantee that I will be able to get back to it. But if I were doing a contest or something, then I would have to the chance and risk playing the game without that saving method because if I were doing said contest I would also be recording my game, either the built in windows screen recorder or an external device like my mom's tablet. Now thinking about this whole cheat device and cheat codes thing, there is one game of all games that I actually used a continue code in order to finish it and that is Milon's Secret Castle, and still have always been unsure of that one because the game manual gives the code which allows you to continue after losing anytime after the ground floor is cleared. I had always wondered why they didn't simply put the continue option in plain sight, but then the game itself has a lot of hidden secrets, thus the method of continuing being no different. I never considered it cheating many years ago because it was given in the manual, yet as the years progressed I got to thinking, what if I just got really good at this game and was able to beat it without that simple little button combo, but that would mean doing it without dying because you only get one life. But I've always made note of that one, used continue code, 6 deaths/continues total (or something). It's that one game of all that I'm like damn, do they really expect you to no death this!? Yes, I know it is possible given one plays a game enough, you can get damn good at it, but I've only ever played it through twice. But no deathing it is what one would have had to do if they somehow didn't have the manual back in the day nor any hint that there even was that secret continue option, unless found accidentally (it's not like enter the konami code for Contra or the quick button maneuvers you had to do with Ikari Warriors to continue) which only requires holding left and pressing start (after the first crystal is obtained). So since we are on this topic I'm curious from others on the thoughts about Milon's Secret Castle's continue option... cheating or not? Or do they really intend the game to be ruthless like real life, one chance and game over? Should be a change to the ending at least whether using the continue option or mastering it without dying. I had considered removing it from my list many years ago just because of the fact that the continue option is hidden thus maybe or maybe not legit. Nowadays, whatever, it's one game, would hardly make a difference in my record if I kept or removed it. But am curious of other people's opinions on this.
  2. Thank you for sharing, gave me something different to do. Been a very long time since I actually used my kanji book.
  3. ookii_risu told what it meant, but if you want it broken down into each word for word definitions translated to english, here goes : 皇后陛下 = Kougou Heika = Her majesty the Empress 関西 = Kansai = a place in Japan 行啓 = gyoukei = a visit or attendance of an empress or a crown prince 御警衞 = Gokeiei = (go=honorific prefix) + guard, patrol or escort 記念 = kinen = remembrance, commemoration 昭和 = Shouwa = that's the name of the era which was from 1926 to 1989 十六年 = 16 year(s) (years designated by era, I was stumped on this for a while since I never studied dates really) 五月 = gogatsu = May Some kanji have changed form over the years so a couple of them don't look the same as on that photo.
  4. And yet this photo reads left to right. Can be confusing. I am still wondering where I learned of the older texts sometimes reading right to left horizontally.
  5. Oh, I woke up a little while ago and suddenly remembered when thinking about the pages inside that Godzilla book, I was mistaken they did not read right to left horizontally but right to left vertically, and anything that did read horizontal was our way, left to right. Don't know what I was thinking, my memory really has gotten poor on some things, was going over all my old game accomplishments last night too and there was so much I didn't remember. But somewhere I learned about the right to left horizontal reading, probably was something I read early in my studies way back in the 90s, more books then, less internet. Someone got the same book here but different cover (seems to have been in the middle of scanning the pages and translating but not finished) : https://mykaiju.com/investigating-godzilla/
  6. Interestingly though the cover is a farce because inside the book is all showa era Godzilla, with only a minor bit (a few pages) at the end on a few of the heisei films.
  7. I'm only using Google Translate for their character writing space, beats typing japanese out. But to use it for any, even a single word for translating, holy shit they ain't got their translating together at all. I have gotten some bizarre stuff that was far off from what it should be. The japanese translator should not even exist, at least not towards ours nor any European languages because all it spouts is nonsense, as you see from your results were. Even if you may've typed them left to right, still no way any of that could have been what they gave. In fact I don't much trust any translator, thus tend to recheck everything in several locations just to be sure, though sometimes they all have different results which really makes my mind go bonkers, or nothing because the words haven't been inserted into the program. Thank goodness french to english isn't that bad, not always perfect, but not a total mess, though sometimes I get some weird shit with that too.
  8. It takes so much to remember it all though. I used to know several hundred kanji, maybe I still do, just not as well, but I recognize them. Amazing though after all the years of not really doing anything with my japanese that I can still read much of it, though reading and understanding what I'm reading is a totally different thing, figments of sentences, words here and there, hardly enough to really know what is being said unless I'm lucking enough to happen to know every word. But when I saw this topic and looked over that book cover, I said, shit, I got this! Opened my big ass kanji book and got the answer, and they have a place near the back that shows those old kana usage. While kanji are hard to remember they do serve a wonderful purpose, exactness, because they are more precise than if written or typed out in kana. I've been going over the dialogue for a famicom game Grand Master and trying to translate to French, but problem is my Japanese is not so good as to figure out what some words are when nearly everything is kana, very few kanji are used because of memory being lacking on these old games. But I'm still going to try, well at least until I get bored. Gives me something different to do for a little bit anyway. So Bubbapauls, is there anything in the photo album, more writing or just blank spaces for photos?
  9. Not that old. It was pretty cool. But it was a rough time too so there was a lot of stuff I parted with.
  10. Yep! I used to have a Godzilla book that read that way. damn, should've kept that too.
  11. 我等の思ひ出 Warera no omohidasu break it down : Warera=We no=ownership to the "we" thus should read as "Our" omo(h)i-dasu=recall, remember, memories "Our memory/memories" notes : Old Japanese book, title and everything in it reads backwards from what we are used to, which also including opening book from what we consider back to front. Ancient Japanese pre-WWII used different kana combinations and such than today, thus the ひ back then is now い, same sound, just now without the consonant. Thankful I held onto that one very essential Japanese book, The New Nelson, though given my recent reinterest in Japanese I should have held on to all of my books.
  12. Every game beaten is an worthy accomplishment, though beaten quite a bit no deaths (somewhere over 50 NES of the 270ish I beat), one of the biggest was Batman 6 times in a row without dying (almost pulled off a 7th but my stamina was fading), Ninja Gaiden no deaths, special ways such as whip only for Castlevania or fist only in Shatterhand, and hell just beating Battletoads even once was a massive one for me (thanks to the NA contest for that one, hell of a motivator for me back then), and beating Marble Madness more than any other game (176 times if my count is correct, all in the week of a Nintendo Age contest). And lots more. I used to keep very accurate records on everything I beat from 2002 to 2012, still have them all, just don't get into the heavy record keeping anymore. I stopped keeping records after I left NA some years ago and then became homeless for a second time, after that just didn't give a @#$% anymore, so barely touched any of the old classics even though still in easy access via emulator. I have messed around in a game once in a while over the years since, but nothing really heavy or serious. But there was those years which seems like ages ago that I was damn awesome. Most of it was NES, almost always, though have some good achievements for the PS1 as well. If interested, got 'em here, should be viewable. Oh, but don't click in any links (youtube, photobucket, whatever), all dead. Some documents have html in them so might look like a mess if viewing in regular text mode, but most do not. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1QHyPSAjqclzcq4Sgts2ACGsea8dysPmA?usp=sharing Also for a few years I kept a gaming journal (progress, purchases, other related stuff going on). https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1FV4j9kOO8E-iPFrURcYqLH8GN4wD8xCG?usp=sharing
  13. Was attempting to beat Mike Tyson in round 1 in Punch-Out. I did it only once ever, way back in 2002, even recorded it with a camcorder, but as the years gone by eventually with it not being important to me anymore, the tape was taped over. I tried again to do the round 1 thing back in 2007, half ass attempt though, didn't do it. Now it has been 12 years since I even played this game and decided to go straight to Tyson and try again. Over and hour and 40 minutes of continuous failures, restart, password, restart, password, @#$% what is with that 3rd punch that keeps knocking me down?! My stamina and patience aren't what they used to be. I wanted to keep trying but I'm worn out. I don't have what it takes, not anymore, long past my prime, I'm not the same gamer I used to be. Now I wish I still had the recording of that fight, who knows, maybe it remains in an old hard drive, or not. Anyway, trying this challenge again was a needed change. I probably still do have what it takes, well perhaps the skill, but not the ambition. Anyway, don't see myself trying again, not important enough.
  14. Too many things, nothing world recordly though. Used to have recordings of a lot, but those are long gone. Perhaps it's time to give it yet another go and maybe this time not delete everything. Something I've been thinking about anyway, kick some game ass like I used to. Perhaps I need some motivation, I'd gone from hardcore to lazy over the years.
  15. Love this song, one of my favorites from Berryz Koubou, and I can sing along to most of it so that's a plus too, even if I don't know every word.
  16. J'adore cette chanson. Leurs hamonies sont parfaites. Je l'écoute presque tous les jours.
  17. Parading people isn't the right way to do things, one has to think about if it were them, creating a topic or list for everyone to see and comment on, shame them over and over, this kind of shit can carry over for some people into their lives, can ruin a person. Such antics are childish and bullying, it's not like they are rapist or murders (okay they could be, anyone could, but that wouldn't be their crime regarding a forum banning). They talk trash too much, ban 'em if they refuse to follow rules, they screw somebody over, same, and sure, others have to know they are untrustworthy or whatever, but making a game of it and making fun for your own amusement is not something I would like to see, even if I don't go into said topic or list. There are better ways to do things without it coming off as people here being looked at negative and spiteful or such. The whole point of a place like this is to bring people together, not drive them away. Sure assholes need to be banned if they become a problem and the worst everyone does need to know to beware of their behavior but at the same time, if you want more and more people to join, and stay, keep the negative vibes to a minimum so people will say how cool this place is instead of talking trash about it. Same thing with the old board, NA, it's done, no point dwelling on it because what we are doing here as a community, we're still together, so really, has anything truly fallen apart? Yeah, NA fell, but it brought us people together to begin with so remember to always remember and respect that, no matter how it fell, all good shit comes to an end, or in some cases, continues to live in another form, thus here we are. Right? Clean and friendly, but at the same time, don't take any shit, can't have people doing whatever they want after all at the expense of others, but respectable and mature.
  18. Bad Dudette. She's my sprite edit from the dude from Bad Dudes. I had intended to do more with her, put her in the game, but whenever I do sprite edits I tend to pick one frame and never do the rest. Originally she was three colors, went through several edits before I was happy with her look and then enhanced her with more colors as seen in my avatar. Also have more outfits for her which I may swap out once in a while. After she turned out so good I did some more characters using the Bad Dudes model. I did intend to do even more, but ran out of steam, bored, distracted, I dunno, maybe someday I will do some more like this. It used to be I would use a hermitcrab sprite I created for my avatar most of the time back with my Miss Clawful name at the old site, but I think a human character better represents me, well a more kick ass version of me.
  19. Tried out Bahamut Lagoon for about an hour and a half. It failed to pull me in, but to give it a fair chance I did finish up the first chapter. The game is too slow, everything, and it lacks excitement, I guess it is supposed to be exciting what with it being so far linear and very heavily story driven, but the characters nor dragons were enticing enough to make me care. I started typing out all of the dialogue as I played as I was playing this in french, fan translation, but being incomplete (beta 4) some of it was sort of a mess with text not stopping in their proper place in the dialogue window, too many things were still in japanese, and the game has a few areas where the background became sorta scrambled. When it comes to games like these because they are so long, if they don't pull me in right away, well, even if I were to try to endure them longer, it feels like a lot of time wasted for me if it still fails to capture me.
  20. Thank you. Now if only I could feel as good as the picture makes me look. Guess I am doing better than most days, at least I could smile when I took it. That's something.
  21. Holy shit these carts are messed up! ↑ Looks like one of the hammer bros attacked that SMB3 cart.
  22. Mystic Quest Legend. Playing for 5:30, current level 17, just arrived in Feubourg. Unlike previous areas while I was in the pyramide glacée I decided not to worry about killing every enemy that stood awaiting me, typically I do, but since the moment I leave and everything resets, it's not like I couldn't come back later to deal out some more pain. My hero, or in this case pretending he is a she and me, is all alone, certainly not good to go up against the unknown without some backup. I don't remember who joins back up with me soon. Let's see, there's Kaéli (Miss Battleaxe I nickname her), Tristan, and Phébé... anyone else? Anyway these are the three I always remembered. Looks it up... Rubicon... Reuben... I totally still don't remember this dude. Guess I'll get a refresher soon enough. Couldn't wait, got him. Okay, so I sorta remember him, well his weapon choice anyway. Dude is powerful, at least for the battlefields that I skipped over on the way to Feubourg so cleared those out super easy with him, and still up to the mine, taking out most enemies with a single blow. Well, now at 6:04, level 19 and just entered the Minia mine. Good place to stop.
