  1. I voted Gameboy, though I'm into both DMG and GBA stuff. I feel that in terms of just immediately getting a really great library at your fingertips GBA SP is a super good option. No need to set anything up and it has a library that spans a huge length of time due to backwards compatibility. On top of that there's a ton of stuff from other systems that got re-released on GBA In terms of newer games I mostly play those on my computer, but that does not really feel like collecting to me
  2. I tried some more carts and a few which definitely don't on GBA (monochrome Sachen games) did run just fine on this. I guess the games I tested earlier that weren't working were just outliers
  3. I recently got an analogue pocket. I've mostly just been throwing random stuff at it to see if it can run it. It seems to mostly match what a normal GBA can do (really early ones had more lax lockout for unlicensed GBC stuff) which is pretty good. Oddly a couple of carts which stopped working on my GBA work with this, so that was a pleasant surprise
  4. For a while there was this PC Engine clone on Xianyu called the GP 2000. It is a bit more common than some of the other ones, but PCE clones were never really a big thing. The seller did a sizable price cut and I wound up buying it. Shipping costed a ton though. I've heard PCE clones can brick original controllers, so it's a good thing this came with the ones made for the clone. What's nice about this one is that it can do original Hu Cards and the made up cartridge format pirates came up with so they didn't have to learn to make fake Hu Cards Here's an old commercial for it I also picked up some Sachen games (they have original Sachen boards, but they're the Mainland Chinese version so they use generic shells) a flashcart and a Firebird cheat cart that isn't broken
  5. I remember once seeing a post (not sure what website) where a person was asking if there are any cheap options for a USB capture card they could use for the Atari 2600. I don't think they found any, but recently I saw a listing for one of these, and it kinda works. It looks terrible since this is a very cheap option though. It can do a few different types of PAL and NTSC though, so that's a plus if you buy a console and aren't sure what TV you need, but you don't want to have to buy a bunch of CRTs to test it
  6. I was under the impression that anything I have ever had a controller in my hand for for any length of time would be off the table if I picked new games only. I still picked it though. Whenever I go back to old games I never do all that much new. Some people find replaying a game rewarding, but I just sort of fall into old habits and wind up thinking why I don't just move on
  7. Looks like Sunsoft is finally ready to make something new (kinda). A remake of Uforia with an arts and craft esthetic. I guess they were taking notes from Nintendo
  8. Just picked these up. I've wanted a copy of Trip World to play for a while (not an Aliexpress repro, those are made of paper mache and smashed up pachinko machines), so this was pretty cool to see drop. The flashcart is also kinda neat, though sadly this just has the default blank ROM on it, and I don't have a machine that can reflash it. It's got a switch at the top, something pretty unusual for Gameboy carts. The switch appears to be for toggling the memory bank controller, which is something I haven't seen any other flashcarts use
  9. I'll vote neutral, though I would say that I am fairly certain of my position and doubt it will ever change. I have nothing against the idea of sealed games, and nothing against people who enjoy collecting them. I think that there has been a lot of poor execution on the part of grading companies, some of which may have been intentional. I don't think I'd ever get into it myself though, I'm not condition sensitive to begin with
  10. Yes, Nintendo chose to follow up Doki Doki Panic with Mario games. Just like how Nintendo chose Super Mario 64 as a direction for the series to go in Being Mario-like does not make something part of the Mario series. Lots of games were made to play like the original SMB, and many of them play more like it than Super Mario 64. 64 is still the official Mario game, not Great Gianna sisters. Future Mario games having DNA from a game arguably does make it part of the series though. Either that or modern Mario games could be considered followups to the older Mario games and Doki Doki Panic, but still considering the two different things. That's how I see it anyways
  11. It's a hack that future entries in the series adopted. Birdos and Shy Guys show up in all sorts of games, Mario Maker 2 has the Mario 2 mushroom, and in the GBA version of SMB3 there are bonus levels where you can pull turnips (accessed with e-Reader cards). I would say SMB2 USA had a bigger impact on the Mario series than SMB2 J (which also added some cool stuff, like bonus worlds and wind). I guess it could be worded that those future Mario games are also Doki Doki Panic games, but I think it is just easier to call them all one thing
  12. Oh, also in Spelunky there is the Kali Altar. Place a stunned (or dead) enemy/npc on it and it will disappear, awarding you Kali points. Gain enough points and Kali will award you an item (or health if you have a really high amount of points). The thing is, if you land on the altar stunned, then you will disappear (counting as a loss). You'll still get points, not that you'll have any use for them. You can also break the altars and Kali will try various ways to get you killed indirectly
  13. Wait a few minutes (no inputs) in Sonic CD and Sonic jumps off screen
  14. Getting killed by shopkeepers is a longstanding tradition in video games. It was happening at least as far back as Link's Awakening (and probably a good deal before that)
  15. You try to rob them and they shoot you with a gun. They have tons of hp and wait at the end of every level after you've killed one, sometimes ignore hitstun/knockback (and even if you do stun them they get up really fast), jump really high, and send you flying if they touch you. On the bright side if you win the fight you get the gun
  16. Over 2800 in Spelunky HD. Would be about the same in Spelunky 2 if it counted resets as deaths (which it should, but the stats screen says otherwise)
  17. Gameboy clones from Taiwan (and later on Mainland China) ran too fast from what I remember. It's probably just a coincidence, but it'd be funny if an old issue from clones back in the early 90s survived all the way until today
  18. Couldn't you play that with just pen and paper? I guess it wouldn't be as fun without the board, but you have eternity, so you could probably make one there
  19. Page 37 (51 of the PDF since there are some non-numbered pages) mentions the dying thoughts thing. "Realm" in this context refers to more of a state rather than a place. Like reincarnating into a human, or an animal, or a hungry ghost. This is a translation of an older source, so maybe it should be taken with a grain of salt
  20. What I usually hear is that a person's final thoughts can be a big influence on how they reincarnate, not so much how they died. I'll see if I can dig up a source for that
  21. I am 90% I'm missing O and U (And I was kinda cheating with my list, writing all the Chinese games in pinyin, not that that helps for O and U)
  22. I'm more into playing newer games on my computer than on console, but I enjoy both. I think it is pretty rare for someone to only like game genres that stopped getting zero representation whatsoever
  23. I think it means it is Super Mario Bros 4 2
