I don't know if a song I've never heard of before would be considered "iconic"

Quite likely before your time - but it charted fairly well IIRC.  Although initially classed as disco it was actually one of the progenitors of Hi-NRG.  I suspect just about anyone of my generation would instantly recognize it from even a few seconds even if they had not seen the movie.  The movie was generally well received and did well at the box office.

This one is an oddity - the Gene Pitney song "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" is (rightfully) identified with the classic western of the same name although it was not in the film.  It was written for the film but due to miscommunication didn't get recorded in time - in any event it could only have been used in the closing credits since it revealed the ending of the movie.  The song was released about a week after the film was and rode to the number 4 slot on Billboard's Top 100.

Looks like it reached #33 on the charts.

Pitchfork magazine said “It's impossible to overstate, let alone list, the amount of composers and films who've ripped off 'Chase'.

At first I thought this was about iconic pop songs IN movies, not FROM movies, so for a second there @G-type I was gonna ask if you liked Huey Lewis and the News

(That would be my actual #3 if that one counted, haha.)

Patrick is such an idiot.  Sports is so much better than Fore.  Makes me angry just thinking about it!

These aren't necessarily my favorites on the list, but the ones I think most stand out as symbolic of their movies.

Don't You Forget About Me
Eye of the Tiger
Ghostbusters

Honorable mentions to Danger Zone and Purple Rain.

I don't know if I could come up with a top three - too much stuff to choose from.  One monster that would be there though would be the theme to ''The Good, the Bad and the Ugly."  The soundtrack album was on various album charts for a long time.  The single (which was actually a cover) did even better on various singles charts.

I picked from those listed, but also thought of

  • Glory of Love, Peter Cetera - Karate Kid II
  • Pretty Woman, Roy Orbison - Pretty Woman <- bit of a cheat

And then there's

  • King of Wishful Thinking, Go West - Pretty Woman

Which comes with the hilarious parody video done by Fallon and Rudd:

Lol.

I went with:

Dangerzone

Eye of the Tiger - this tune takes me right back to those intense sweaty evenings in the wrestling room every time 😉.  The Rocky IV soundtrack has some of my all time favorite workout songs.  Eye of the Tiger is not at the top of the list.

My Heart Will Go On - Mother F’in Celine Dion had a hell of a voice.
