  1. It's certainly an interesting strategy, but as mentioned previously, I cannot imagine these are going to be gang-buster games. I cannot imagine any developer wanting to limit the game in such a way unless they knew that otherwise it would be overlooked in the eShop. I don't collect the Switch, so I have no skin in the game, but it will certainly be interesting to watch as an outsider.
  2. The last few of my serious wants for my PS4 collection fall into that category: Salt and Sanctuary, Shadow Warrior 2, Firewatch. Salt and Sanctuary is the most doable of those three, but it is still hard to justify spending the money on it. The other two I can't imagine I ever will own physically unless the bottom just fall out of PS4 stuff for some reason.
  3. One of the two consoles I would rate as a 10, with the other being the SNES. This is an absolute boss of a console, one of the longest-lasting and a library filled with quality. No matter what kind of games you want to play, the PS2 had something to offer. I think it really helped to popularize backwards-compatibility as a built in feature, since up until that point most consoles required the purchase of some kind of accessory to accomplish it. (Atari 7800 being the main exception I can think of). Of course, it was also a DVD player by default, which certainly helped it appeal to the masses and probably did help people get on board with the new medium. Probably the only think I can knock it for is that I still don't really care for the PlayStation controller design, but we wouldn't get what I consider the closest to the 'perfect' controller until the XBOX. Too many to list, but probably the most notable games to me: Okami, Guitar Hero, God of War, Devil May Cry, Bully, Shadow of the Colossus, Kingdom Hearts, Katamari Damacy.
  4. I'm like the reverse of everyone here, I've seen Bojack but never much of either Beavis and Butthead or South Park. Beavis was before my time and at this point, there's just nothing about it that makes me want to ever watch it. I have no interest in South Park because it is just too vulgar for my tastes. Bojack I absolutely adore, one of the best shows I have ever watched. It hits some serious and thought-provoking topics that I really haven't seen done in a tv show before. It does start off on the rough side, but really hits its stride once you reach the second half of the first season. From there it takes a compelling look at the uglier side of the human condition that I found to be quite thought-provoking.
  5. Playing through the DLC of Horizon: Zero Dawn before finishing the game and getting the Platinum. I plan to spend the summer playing through my collection of indie games to hopefully cut down on my backlog a bit before October horror game marathon.
  6. Definitely prefer SMB3 over 64. Super Mario 64 is a great game, a masterpiece at the time it was released that was a revolution of 3D design. But to be honest, I've never been a fan of 3D platforming games. I've always had some difficulty judging depth in 3D games, so when it comes to platforming I've never been great at them. I can get by, but I have a preference for 2D platforming games. In addition, the camera controls in 64 just doesn't hold up like it did back in the day. They are serviceable, but don't allow for the amount of control you really need. I also love the variety of power-ups available in SMB 3 compared to just the three you get in 64.
  7. Do you mean Wii U? Not a whole lot of games from the Wii have been ported to the Switch. Galaxy, Xenoblade and Skyward Sword are the three that come to mind.
  8. This is a very difficult one for me to rate. I cannot argue that the Wii wasn't revolutionary, it brought video games back to the general public in a way we hadn't really seen since probably the original Atari 2600. It was no longer a hobby reserved for nerds, but instead one that could be enjoyed by young, old, men, women, children. Whether this move was for better or for worse is an entire conversation by itself. It also had probably the greatest library of retro titles ever, with all subsequent attempts to live up to it's Virtual Console just not able to compare. It certainly has left an impact on the gaming industry, even if what made it so unique really didn't have staying power. And that is where my hate arrives. I have never, ever enjoyed the motion controls of the Wii. I have tolerated them to played games like Skyward Sword and Muramasa, but at no point did I ever find them to be any more enjoyable than just using a standard controller. The sad thing is, there are so many great games on this console that would be fun to play, but my dislike of motion controls really puts me off from it. I think I will give it a 6, just a bit above average.
  9. Anyone following the LRG releases, we have confirmation that the third game is coming at the end of next week.
  10. I collect the PS4 because it has such a wealth of the kind of stuff that I really like. Thanks to companies like Limited Run Games, I have a large buffet of strange indie games to play, as well as a decent amount of ports of retro games. Tie that together with heavy-hitter AAA-games and it's been an enjoyable ride, though I will say I am coming close to having everything I REALLY want aside from some of the expensive stuff.
  11. I was disappointing to find out that there are no plans to sell that book separately. I love Jeremy Parish's stuff, I own both NES and Game Boy Works books and eagerly await his SNES and Virtual Boy ones. But I don't own a Switch and there's no way I can justify spending that amount of money just to get the book.
  12. I owned this for a few years after college as my first console of the last gen and while at the time I certainly enjoyed it, I can say in hindsight that I made a mistake not jumping on the PS4 instead. Outside of a great controller that just reiterated on what was so great with the XBOX 360 controller, there's honestly just not a whole lot that makes the One stand out compared to either the Switch or the PS4. It has such a sad lineup of exclusives, with Rare Replay probably being the highlight to me, as I'm not a fan of racing games (and both Ori games no longer exclusive). Both Halo and Gears of War stumbled on this console, Fable never showed up, and there was a lack of anything else truly notable to stand up against Sony's titles like God of War, Spider-Man and Ghosts of Tsushima. Microsoft severely stumbled with this console, which otherwise is a fine machine, but without the exclusives, there just not really a reason to pick it up these days. 5/10.
  13. The area right before the final boss in Okami. It's just a boss rush and at that point, you have already defeated one of the bosses on two separate occasions. There is really no need for them at this point in the game and having to go through the big bads again adds nothing but tedium to the game. You are so hyped to finally reach the final area and boss, only to find you have to slog through a boss gauntlet before you have a chance to face down the final boss. It's annoying and one of the very few criticisms I have of Okami, which I otherwise consider my favorite game of all time.
  14. My brother who is deep in the Yu-Gi-Oh community told me about this, and I have noticed that over the pandemic, I couldn't ever find any Pokemon or Yu-GI-Oh cards anywhere in town when before, they were quite easy to pick up.
  15. I'm lucky enough that I have had the chance to play Donkey Kong on an original arcade cabinet and I will definitely say that it is the definitive way to play. Console ports just never feel quite right with the d-pad movement in my experience. It's a pretty fun game which gave us the long-lasting characters of Mario and Donkey Kong and really helped to establish Nintendo in the video game market. But with that said, I settled on giving it an 8. As mentioned in this thread already, it does get repetitive much faster than some other arcade games I love, such as Pac-Man or Galaga. I don't know exactly why, but it is a game that I will only play for a short bit and won't throw in a second quarter when I die. It might be due to the primitive nature of the platforming, which of course is nowhere near refined as it is in Super Mario Bros and later games. But having been raised on Super Mario, it's hard to go back to the platforming in this game. Whereas something like Pac-Man still feels great in this day. 8/10.
  16. I think you will have a fracture in PS4 collecting. You will have the direhard fullset collectors who want anything with an ESRB logo on it. Then you will have people who go for just the U.S. retail set, excluding anything you could only purchase through online stores. Some people will include VR games as part of the set, some will exclude them.
  17. I remember having a triple pack game cart for the NES that had Wrecking Crew, Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros together. I would seamlessly switch from Wrecking Crew to Super Mario Bros without ever having to change the game pak. But there is no triple pack that contains Wrecking Crew, so somehow I completely forget ever having to swap the paks when changing games.
  18. My main source of modern information is Push Square and Nintendo Life. I use Facebook collecting groups for info about new releases that are fairly obscure.
  19. Unless it was a case where I am Scrooge McDuck-level wealthy and 1 mil is just a drop in the bucket, I wouldn't. I do think it is an interesting historical piece, but I could do so much more with that amount of money. At the very least I could probably acquire a complete PS4 library with that amount, and then some.
  20. I've had a collector's urge ever since I was young. I've done Pokemon Cards, Star Wars figures, magazines. I currently collect PS4 games and Transformers. At the core, I buy games that I want to one day play through, even though I am probably way past the point of ever being able to realistically do so. But beyond that, there is just something internally satisfying to see my shelf full of games. I also enjoy the hunt as well, there's just something so exciting about walking into a game store and finding something I have been looking for, or something so obscure that I've never seen it previously. I could sell my entire collection tomorrow and I would just go hunting again. I also think that deep down, it may be a coping mechanism to deal with the fact that I am very likely never going to be able to afford to do the things that I really dream of doing. Collecting is something that I can do that I can find some feeling of accomplishment when I know things like owning my own house are just unachievable.
  21. My favorite console of all time, to me this is the height of Nintendo. This is the one console that I wish I could own the full set for. This was Nintendo at it's absolutely finest. Their first party line-up was a thing to behold, giving us some of the best games ever created and they still maintained strong partnerships with third party companies to back up their lineup with an amazing catalog of games. You get into any serious discussion about the best games of all time any many SNES games will be part of that conversation. In addition, the system itself is built like a tank and even today it these consoles still hold up with little need for repairs. This console also gave us the Game Boy Player, a concept that was only revisited once again that opened up an entire second library of games to play. This console is an absolute 10/10 for me, not question.
  22. We can only hope this does well enough to convince Konami to allow Limited Run to do Castlevania Requiem.
  23. From what I understand, it was supposed to be more of a multi-media machine that just happened to play video games. So you end up with Myst, The 13th Guest, Hotel Mario and the bad Zelda games, but then you also have things like The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe. I guess you could say that it was a very early incarnation of the all-in-one media boxes consoles have become today, but I still think that is being kind. No one cared for this thing back in the day and now we only care about it because if has some bad Zelda and Mario games that will never show up on any other platforms and it has a very interesting backstory connected to Nintendo and Sony. 2/10.
  24. For me, the distinction comes down to what is emphasized the most in the game. A platformer mainly focuses on platforming, like in Mario, where enemies exist more as an additional obstacle rather than a direct threat to the character. An action platformer places a similar amount of focus on the platforming and the combat aspects, like in Castlevania, so you still have a significant amount of platforming challenges, but you are required to combat enemies more frequently and directly. A run-and-gun or hack-and-slash shifts more to focusing on combat with light platforming elements, such as Contra, where platforming exists, but the challenge usually comes more from the enemies.
