That's really interesting - the game stores I owned back in the late 90s through about 2010 were almost that exact setup - buy/sell/trade for used games + LAN center with custom gaming PCs + tabletop section for D&D and CCGs, Friday Night MTG, etc. I loved it.

I'm really digging the clean look you've got here! One of my game rooms has a similar setup, but using the Rubbermaid track shelving from Home Depot and Lowes. Frankly. though, these Elfa shelves have a much cleaner look! The narrowest I've been able to find in the Rubbermaid line is 8", which leaves way too much open space/overhang on each shelf - I assume you're using the 6" deep Elfas here? Are those two walls in the top picture single shelves all the way across or are there multiple shelves per row there (they are extremely seamless-looking if the latter - much more so that I've been able to accomplish with the Rubbermaids).

That was a really fun episode. Currently, I tend to bucket eras into four general groupings. I stay away from the retro/modern dichotomy because it will always be relative to whatever is current gen at any given time. Atari Era - All consoles released pre-NES Sprites Era - 8-bit and 16-bit consoles The Shitty 3D & FMV Era - Primarily the 5th and 6th gen consoles (but I also typically include the early CD stuff in the 4th gen here as well like Sega CD, CD-i, etc). Man this era has generally not aged well. HD Era - 7th gen and beyond

Here are a couple of my one-of-a-kinds. My unreleased Superman Returns disc for the PSP. This UMD prototype disc was demo'ed at E3 2006 but the game was later cancelled (allegedly because the devs were having problems getting enough juice out of the PSP to properly run the game). This is the only copy of this unreleased PSP game known to have been found. And, more recently, I stumbled across this - the North American release of the CD-i's Internet Kit. Philips released the kit in Europe in 1995 as the "CD-i Internet Kit" and then announced a US release at E3 in May 1996 (renamed the "Web-i" kit). However, Philips discontinued the CD-i line in the US later in '96 and, until now, it was assumed that the Web-i kit had been cancelled. I found this one earlier this year - it was purchased directly from Philips Media in February 1997 (it still had the original Philips Media invoice/packing slip) - indicating that Philips probably liquidated the few of them they had actually produced via DTC sale. So far, this is the only one we know of:

The '09s were a standard copy of the game with a plastic slipcover that's entirely clear other than the pink banner at the bottom and up near Favre's hand. Other than the slipcover, the game itself appears to be identical to the standard release (at least on the Wii version) - on a sealed copy there is potentially one additional difference - the shrink wrap has an EA logo stamped on it in pink - I don't have a sealed standard Wii Madden 09 to compare it to, but the pink makes me think that the stamp is probably unique to the Hope Foundation version (IIRC the standard versions were aways red). Here's a pic of my sealed copy that I had handy on my phone - if I remember, I'll add a picture of the pink EA stamp I mentioned on the seal this weekend sometime when I'm back home: I don't have one of the '11s, but the fact that everything about the game itself is the same on the '09s makes it seem reasonable that a sticker might be the only differentiation on the '11s. As far as the red text box on '11 goes - the red box with the magazine quote is a variant on the cover art itself (not a sticker). I'm not sure of the backstory, but Madden 12 had similar variants with and without a yellow "splat" featuring a Wall Street Journal quote about the game (because, you know, the WSJ is clearly a leader in video game reviews).

Thanks everyone! I agree - if I was doing this for me, I'd just DIY it. She was contemplating getting her husband a refurbished vintage unit of one of his old favorites and I mentioned the upkeep on them and thought there might be a better modern option. I mentioned the 1Ups to her already and she was familiar with those. I'll check into the AtGames one, thanks @Teh_Lurv! And for myself, I'm definitely checking out those Kraylix Kits, @DefaultGen. That thing looks slick.

I've never paid much attention to the modern arcade MAME cabinet scene, but a co-worker asked me for some suggestions as a gift for her husband. Do any of you guys have recommendations for who the good vendors for off-the-shelf full-sized MAME cabinets are?

Great list @billybob884 - I love the listing of all the extra inserts. I'll go through my CIB set this weekend and compare notes. One item of note - I did check the contents on my Web of Fire and it had one of the "Sega Saturn" registration cards in it (i.e. the one you have pictured for World Series). I haven't touched the contents, so that's what mine had in it when I bought it in 2009. Now, I got it second-hand, but it came from a collector back then (and is in immaculate condition). Web of Fire came out after World Series, so it would at least seem to make sense that if they had moved on from the Visions inserts for World Series the same would hold true for Web of Fire. Or it could just be a Sega crapshoot.

That's not completely true (at least in the US). With very few exceptions, television networks generate more revenue from their distribution affiliation fees (i.e. their share of your cable/satellite/etc bill) than they do on advertising revenue. 8-10 years ago, it used to be about a 1:1 ratio between ad revenue and distribution revenue, but now networks bring in about 150-200% as much affiliation fee revenue than they do ad revenue. Video distribution margins are extremely small because virtually all of the money you pay your cable/satellite company for video gets passed directly through to the networks as a subscription fee. That's why we are seeing things like Playstation Vue shut down - they don't have other higher-margin services (like broadband or mobile) to bundle with their video product.
