  1. Not to hijack the thread but I’m curious what all you’re missing? Impressive pickup as always!
  2. I sent them my shiny Slowpoke card and was hoping for at least a “Poggers” but it was graded a “You’re not the guy, pal” which seems to indicate it was a piece of shit
  3. This comment chain goes back a bit so it’s hard to keep track, but I never claimed the criticism against Nintendo’s copyright policing was an unpopular opinion. This convo was an offshoot/side comment from someone else’s post. Isn’t that what this thread is about though, venting your unpopular opinions that might get you skewered? How did you know I’m an NHL fan?! If you want to see my hockey rants you have to go to Twitter and I know that’s not something many want to do. Fair enough.
  4. Then you’ve got your work cut out for you because it’s one of the loudest and most widespread criticisms of Nintendo. If we were only talking about emulation sites and piracy then sure, I’d be with you, but we’re not.
  5. Your initial statement was that Sega didn’t have anything worth protecting. That was my disagreement. Their ruthlessness and various overreactions when it comes to their IPs is a fair criticism of Nintendo and I’m far from the only person who gets onto them for it. Nintendo isn’t above criticism and there are plenty of Nintendo mega-fans that don’t even pretend they are.
  6. I hear you. My counterpoint is that I do think their “Genesis Does” commercial is still one of the best ad campaigns of all time, as proven by the fact that people are still mad at it today, both people that were there for it and kids who weren’t. After being crushed by the 8-bit monopoly, they came out of the gates swinging. IIRC they had businessmen recommending this sort of branding. Did Sega of Japan advertise the same way or was it just the American businessmen at SoA?
  7. Phew, I logged on to 8 notifications and thought it was going to be a whole lot worse than it was
  8. Hard disagree there but to each their own. Nintendo goes too hard against their own fans imo. I didn’t play them until I was an adult and I think they’re better than DKC but like I said above, to each their own. You’re right for the most part but this is the first generation that I haven’t been able to blindly buy a Nintendo game and be assured of its quality. Super Mario Party, Mario Tennis Aces (before the updates/DLC), and the new Mario Golf are all examples of games that are lackluster, lacking content, etc. from Nintendo.
  9. My older brother is the one who got to decide which consoles we had growing up. I was too young back in the day to ever ask him anything like this but yesterday we did talk about the 90s console wars. He said he just liked Nintendo and that’s why he asked our parents for Nintendo stuff exclusively. Said he never hated Sega or anything, just liked Nintendo. After the N64 and Dreamcast he got a PC and called it a day He said he does think it’s weird how dudes still argue about Nintendo vs. Sega 30 years later though. Sega of America and Nintendo of America knew what they were doing for sure, it’s such an American thing to arbitrarily argue over brands.
  10. And it’s not a good look for me to be like “I love Nintendo, really!” and then post this meme that I just saw on Reddit but that’s what I originally came here to post lol Nintendo has done a really good job of Disney-fying their brand for sure. But I feel like it’s only the young fans that still buy the “Nintendo is a loving big brother who just makes games for fun and just wants you to have fun and doesn’t care about money at all” narrative.
  11. I know that Nintendoes send legal threats to fans showing their creative love for Nintendo while Sega encourages their fans. I hate to come out of the gate seeming like the Sega fanboy (if you saw gameroom you wouldn’t think I was) but I just don’t like blind defense of any company. Like I said in an earlier post I don’t want to be a * company * fan or collector, but a video game fan and collector.
  12. I guess I’m just jaded but I feel like we’ve seen this shiny new toy song and dance come and go in various iterations with various companies. We’ll see but I’m not holding my breath just yet
  13. The good news is that it has to do at least as well as Steam Link and Steam Box, right? As for calling it a Switch killer: Yeah, I remember when Game Gear was called the Game Boy killer, the PSP the DS killer, the Vita the 3DS killer.
  14. No I never “converted” but I was a Nintendo-supremacist when I was a kid, then I grew up and realized it’s okay to like other companies and that it isn’t going to hurt Nintendo’s feelings. When I finally played Sony and Sega’s consoles I realized what I had been missing. Now the Genesis is one of my favorites.
  15. So I was in a local game store today and had an interaction that reminded me of this thread. They have SMB hooked up to an NES and CRT free for anyone to play in the store. A little kid was playing it (obviously for the first time). I was trying to give him tips but he wasn’t really receptive so I just let him play. He fell through one of the holes in 1-1 and told me it was a glitch. I jokingly was like “You should write Nintendo about it so they know” and he said “No way, this is an old game. They’re not going to patch it. They probably already sold it to another studio or something.”
  16. Did not see “SMB” in the title when I quickly read through this and was like “Oh okay are we doing these types of topics now?” Lmao Fun story to hear about though. It’s SMB, what more can you say? My older brother made sure to raise me on the original NES trilogy before I was old enough to start having my own consoles and games. It’s hard for me to imagine anyone never having played it, but I did meet a teenager (who plays video games) the other day who legitimately did not know what an NES or SNES looked like so nothing shocks me anymore.
  17. Forgive my ignorance but what are these yellow carts? Is there somewhere I can read up on these?
  18. I’ve been in a lot of retro gaming spaces that make claims like “Sega was never good” which is more what I was poking fun at in my initial comment, not so much the people here. As for Sega-16, yikes. I’ve never heard much good about that forum. I want to be known as a video game collector, not a *company* collector.
  19. I’m excited to play it. I don’t hate Castlevania The Adventure but I’ve heard a lot of people say Legends is light years better than that one so I’m curious to see how it holds up to the other two in the GB trilogy. The same store had a copy of Avenging Spirit too but unfortunately I missed out on that one.
  20. Super happy to pick up this clean copy of Legends. I’m not a boxed GB collector so having it cart only is no issue for me. I also picked up a backlit atomic purple GBC, but I can never do the screens justice in photos so just take my word for it.
  21. Lol the majority of what I play and collect is Nintendo, I just also enjoy Sega. As someone who was around during the 16 bit console war (and was on team SNES) it’s so weird to me that people still get defensive over Nintendo 30 years later. Especially when you can play both like a normal person.
  22. Wait, why are we talking shit about the Mega Drive/Genesis in a unpopular opinion thread? It’s all Nintendo-centric dudes ever do is be mad that Genesis exists
