Apocryphal Retro Gaming Stories

Tons of retro-game related stories have made their way into our hobby's "canon" without definitive verification.

From hotly-debated rental exclusives, to meme-worthy purple antagonists, to Atari landfill legends (that turned out to be somewhat valid) and brainwashing arcade games of unknown origin - What are some tales that always stuck out to you? (And can they ever be proven?)

my first thought was all the schoolyard rumors of yesteryear, always told by someone whose 'cousin did it'. "mew is under the truck", "sonya blade's nude-ality", and "you can bring Aeris back to life" being my favorites.

When I first played through FFVIi. I thought for sure Aeris would come back to life.  I revisited that place a bunch of times on my first playthrough.  No way could this character I put so much time into just die like that.  There were still limit breaks to get!  😂

Only 200 copies of Stadium Events were made and sold at a Woolworths in New England. Just ignore any copy with a sticker from a different store or the fact that there are 3 cartridge variants!

There's some modern day game collecting mythology too with things like people saying every star code NES box was a promo/giveaway or every NFR Halo is an employee copy.

Mine is that people still say Beast Wars for N64 was a blockbuster exclusive when it’s stated in Nintendo Power that it got a retail release

Indiana Jones gets the same treatment too, though it wasn't exactly retail, but people conveniently forget what Lucasgames did do.  In the run up to the games release they put on their website a day/time to login to buy a copy of the game as they did like a run of 10K of them and everything else went to blockbuster.  I still have my mail order copy of the game from their site complete in the box no less.  I've had enough people shout me down spread over many years a part of being full of crap about it.  I used to be able to find a copy of the old sales site on the web archive, maybe it's still there.

EDIT: I thought I might get lucky, didn't.  I went into my old big box PC games and through the old lucasarts catalog/adventurer inserts and couldn't find it.  But I did find a gem of something in the 98/99 book my XW vs TIE book, last inside page is the Indy that did end up on N64, in 1999 Infernal Machine was listed as a PC and PSX!! game, not N64.  I guess the PSX was just too weak to do it.

Nobody will ever believe me, but after losing my save data 2 months after Pokémon came out, I decided to see how much I could sequence break by trading (long before I'd ever heard the term) and found the truck without already knowing about it.  I theorized that there was some way to get Mew out of it, but I never said anything about it online.  The only person I mentioned the theory to was my brother.

A few:

-From my Neighbor at the time Smash 64 came out: Ness in Super Smash Brothers is from a game that's a sequel to "paper boy "called Pizza Boy, and for his moves he says "Pizza Fire and Pizza Thunder". I thought this was true until Melee came out and I unlocked the trophy that says Ness' story.

-A retrogame store employee talking to a customer 3 years ago when asked about what the rarest video game is: My dad has the original Zelda Nintendo cartridge made of actual gold. It's worth at least 4 thousand dollars.

-If you jump into the window above Peach's castle entrance in Mario 64 you can ride Yoshi

-Use strength on the truck by SS Anne to get Mew.

-Level all 3 starter Pokemon to 99 and they will turn into the 4th evolution

Legend has it that the Earthbound press kits that Nintendo circulated were delivered in Mach Pizza boxes. Today, most of the individual pieces of these kits have been found: keychains, newspaper clippings, the ruler, gameplay still frames, official press release, etc.

But to this day there is no verifiable evidence that the pizza box ever existed. If this pizza box were to ever surface, it’s discoverer would undoubtedly be crowned Grand Duke of all Geekdom and have first rights to all the babes and pop tarts therein.

Very interesting! Maybe this can somehow legitimize by neighbor's story! (Although no way did they know anyone in the press).

That the original version of Tomb Raider in game could get Lara either topless or nude, Nude Raider.

Yes I know it's a real thing, by hacking/modding, I'm talking by intent with a code.  That got peddled to a bunch of horny polygon pullers in the 90s.

i debated whether to include "Nude Raider" or the "Nude-ality" in my post, so i'm glad the other one got mentioned! it's unsurprising how many game rumors at that time had to do with women getting naked.

Yeah no real surprise.  Do you remember what year Tomb Raider hit the PC and PS1?  1996.  Do you remember really what year the internet just started to slowly creep into advertising and gaming?  1995-97-ish and that's right in the middle of that.  Before 1995 only a few businesses really got into it, largely for their product advertising, colleges, general email for them or anyone who got AOL, prodigy, or compuserve by that point.  Keeping that in mind, even then, largely the internet tiny compared but well...porn still had a large unchecked presence.  Before that point your Boob Raider would have been basically jerking off to the Sears catalog or stealing daddy's playboy.  No surprise some hot brit pops up with short shorts and a huge rack...triangles or not, someones going to hack them boobs into plain view.

I remember having read stacks of magazines back in the 90s with EGM, CVG, Hyper among a few others. I’ve definitely read a fair few rumours or supposed news that never eventuated. The problem is that now 20+ years onwards, my memory cells have disintegrated and I can hardly remember anything gaming news-related from the 90s-2000s.

Just mainly vague memories of supposed codes in various games for extra characters, fatalities or nudity in female lead characters.

I spent far too much time trying to get nudy codes to work for both of these games.  Kitana was pretty smokin', and the crazy amount of secrets already put into MK2 gave me hope that the Nudality was real. 😂

Michael Jackson working on sonic 3.

I've always wanted to know more about this one. Was he ever directly credited as a composer for the game?
