What are some of the most iconic, "Everyone Should Play" games... you've not played?

Recommended Posts

A bit ago I went through IGN's most recent top 100 list to see what I had or had not played. I made a list of the ones I hadn't tried and have made a bit of an effort to go through them. Here the ones I have since played:

Portal
Yoshi's Island
MGS 3
Control
Shadow of the Colossus
Divinity 2
FF 3/6

Really enjoyed Portal and Control. Yoshi's Island and Shadow were pretty good. I did not like MGS3 or Divinity 2 and have resigned that I'll probably never finish FF 3. It's good, but too much grinding for my liking.

Below are the games I still have some plans to try eventually:

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag
Monkey Island 2 (owned - steam)
Burnout 3
Fallout 2
Thief 2 Metal Age
System Shock 2
Persona 5 Royal
Return of the obra dinn (owned - steam)
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory
Silent Hill 2 (owned - xbox 360)
Batman: Arkham City
Dishonored 2
Journey
Diablo 2
Fallout New Vegas
Bloodborne
Witcher 3 wild hunt
Symphony of the Night (owned - xbox sx)
Disco Elysium
Portal 2 (owned - steam)

Will need to check out the list posted by @Reed Rothchild as well!

In fact, I'm making up this set of gaming eras, completely off the top of my head:

  1. The early age of video games
  2. The post-Super Mario Bros. 2D age
  3. The early 3D age
  4. The refined 3D age
  5. The modern melting pot of classic and new ideas age

Funny timing.  Literally yesterday I took a look at this list and counted how many I've played.

I'm at 158 of the top 200.  Which I feel like is going to be highest number here outside of maybe @Sumez or maybe a couple other people.

I also plan on rolling out a series of blogs later this year for my own personal top 200 games.  But I'll only be happy with such a list if I play as many of history's most notable games as possible.  But this is a neverending battle.

Anyway, as of right now, here are just some of the big ones that I still need to get to.  Some, like LoL and Roblox, I'll probably never play:

  1. Final Fantasy
  2. The Witcher III
  3. Dark Souls III
  4. Roblox (any of it)
  5. Minecraft (in any serious capacity)
  6. Overwatch (in any form)
  7. League of Legends
  8. Tears of the Kingdom
  9. Disco Elysium
  10. Final Fantasy VII remakes
  11. Divinity Original Sin 2
  12. Baldur's Gate 3
  13. Cyberpunk 2077
  14. The OG Pokemon games
  15. Grand Theft Auto V
  16. God of War Ragnarok
  17. Super Mario Galaxy 2
  18. System Shock
  19. Some of the early LucasArts stuff like Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, etc.
  20. Outer Wilds

...and so forth.  It never ends.

This doesn't feel like it's possible, but I'm at 165 / 200.

Didn't *beat* all of those of course, but in terms of played decent amount of.  This was an interesting exercise!

I think those of us who still play "modern" / not-only-super-old games are probably going to a be a higher percentage.

Here are the ones from that 200 list that I have not yet played.  Some of these are definitely in a backlog of sorts that I do really want to get to and haven't yet.  And then some others I'm not really interested in, so a combination:

Witcher 3, The: Wild Hunt
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Halo: Combat Evolved
Red Dead Redemption 2
Disco Elysium
Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow (1998) / Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen (2004)
Batman: Arkham City
Batman: Arkham Asylum
League of Legends
Outer Wilds
Assassin's Creed II
Advance Wars
Burnout 3: Takedown
Return of the Obra Dinn
Dishonored
Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings
Fortnite
Civilization V
Hotline Miami
Fire Emblem: Three Houses
NHL Hockey (Series)
Into the Breach
Left 4 Dead
Halo 3
Dota 2
Halo 2
Ultima Online
Robotron 2084
Bayonetta 2
EverQuest
Gears of War
Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft
Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal (2000) / Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver (2010)
Untitled Goose Game
Papers Please

Oh that one has definitely been on my "super-want-to-play" list, trust me.  Haven't gotten to it yet, but really want to.

I also still want to play Witcher 3 and haven't yet, as well as Papers Please and maybe Into the Breach.

I technically played Hearthstone for a bit at my brother's insistence a few years ago, but I didn't really care for it too much.  I played a few of the other ones a teensy bit, like some of the Halo games and Fortnite for maybe 5 minutes, but not enough to really consider having played them.

I love PlayStation and some of my favorite games are PlayStation exclusive games.  But, to each their own.

I think I've only played a decent amount from that earlier list because my gaming has been a pretty broad mix of PC, retro, and modern.  For many years, all I really had was PC so I was pretty heavy into PC gaming.  That definitely feels like a segment that isn't as well covered across VGS, just generally speaking.  I know we have a few PC gamers here but it seems like most people here are into consoles.

One area that I'm probably significantly lacking is arcade gaming.  I know many arcade games were ported in some fashion to consoles, but I wasn't able to go to the arcade much when I was younger - I remember going on a few occasions so I played some of the racing games and a few others, but there are lots of other arcade games I never got to play.  And then I don't really have much personal exposure to things like Neo Geo, 3DO, Jaguar, TurboGrafx / PcEngine, and a few other less 'common' systems.

My distaste for the Playstation is a personal preference thing, based on feelings rather than rationale.

I can fully accept there are great games and experiences on the system that I would enjoy, but never will, and I'm okay with that.

Actually, it's helpful to have such a large swathe of gaming taken off the table, as it helps me focus my collecting and playing on the systems I prefer.

But, I would never judge someone else for their preferences, just as I don't really mind what people think of mine!

Let me take this moment to promote The Backlog Challenge

"See all those games you're supposed to play, but never do because you're too busy, I dunno, watching YouTube videos of cats or something?  Well take the reins today, and... like, do it and shit.  Those lists aren't going to cross themselves off!"

I like Brett Weiss' books. I guess he kinda irked off Pat Contri at one point, but I think he is a good writer.  He's written 2 books that attempt to identify the top 100 console games from 1977-1987 and also from 1988-1998.  I grabbed the game list for both books and will post it behind spoiler tags below.  I've played 125 of the 200 he identifies.  Although, in counting those up, I didn't really pay much attention to the platform he listed.

Here's a list of some of the titles from his lists that I've never played.

  1. Banjo-Kazooie
  2. Bonk's Adventure
  3. Boulder Dash
  4. Castlevanla Ill: Dracula's Curse.
  5. Donkey Kong Country.
  6. EarthBound
  7. Earthworm Jim
  8. Final Fantasy Ill
  9. Gunstar Heroes
  10. Mega Man
  11. Ninja Gaiden
  12. Panzer Dragoon Saga
  13. Phantasy Star IV
  14. Star Fox 64
  15. Strider
  16. Super Castlevania IV
  17. Super Mario World
  18. Tempest 2000
  19. Twisted Metal 2.
  20. Virtua Fighter

I think the term modern gaming is always moving and can't be considered static. PS2 and GC would now fall into the classic/retro/old/whatever term you want to call it realm now. Each era will have different styles, but it definitely isn't modern gaming.

It's a lot like film. You wouldn't call a movie from the 50's modern but it's definitely miles different from a movie from the 20's.

I think it was mostly Amico related that got them going at each other, but I've read Brett's works of fiction and many of his magazine articles over the years.  The guy can complete a sentence just fine.

Interesting. I've played 137 of those. Also, of the 20 you list, I've played 18 and beaten 8 of them 😄

Well, Super Mario Bros 1, 3 and Super Mario World are three good starting points for an idea.  There's also games like Mega Man 2, Legend of Zelda, Pac-Man, Wolfenstein, Doom, Sonic 2... etc.  You know, the iconic stuff everyone's heard of and if you were to say you'd never played that game, not even for 5 minutes, they're likely to pull your gamer card. 😄

Yeah I know what you meant, it's just hard to really think of what they are. 🙂 It's easy to think of the ones I have played.

The list Reed linked seems like a good springboard, I'll go through that.

The list has some really strange sections further down.  Some problem with their formula, probably.
