He's referring to the COVER for Tom Sawyer which was released in Japan for the Famicom; you might consider doing a search online next time:

He wrote, and I quote, "...are racist. Even by NES/Famicom era standards"

So really it was only Famicom, not NES.

What's racist about that cover?

He never said it was on NES, only that it was of the NES/Famicom era. That's just straight up English.

As for what's racist, that style of depiction of black people is considered a caricature, and racist. A decent explanation of a number of forms of such racism can be found on this handy page: Anti-Black Imagery - Jim Crow Museum (ferris.edu)

That page doesn't really explain what's racist about the drawing. What do people dislike about this one?

That is a classic late 19th/early 20th century minstrelsy depiction of a black person, complete with oversized, reddened lips. Characters like that are derived from minstrel shows where white people put on blackface and masqueraded as stereotypes of black people to entertain white people. Such shows are specifically where the term Jim Crow comes from, being a prominent character of one.

If you don't know how that caricatured depiction of a black person is harmful and racist, then you are hopeless. I can't tell if you are being a troll or your upbringing was so devoid of racial awareness that you are incapable of gaining that skill at this point in your life.

The lips obviously.  Like this is a VERY frequent caricature of black people.  Other minor things I would say are the darkness/color of the skin.  Possibly the eyes too.  I'm familiar with how American's caricature black people.  I'm not exactly knowledgeable of Japanese's caricatures of black people.  I wouldn't be surprised if how they drawn their eyes was something that was only done with black characters.  If that is the case then it's clearly a caricature of black people in Japanese culture.  Not all caricatures are universal and some could be regionally/culturally unique.

So which physical features of a black person would you highlight in a caricature? The white kids on that cover appear pretty exaggerated.

We're not here to debate or educate on racism, please consider educating yourself via research.

Thread back on track, please.

Caricatures are harmful, there is no acceptable one. You want to have a cartoon with people of color? Just depict the skin color, heightening other features is problematic.

That you don’t understand that tells me you live in a fantasy world and maybe mature conversations on race just aren’t for you. A forum for video game enthusiasts can’t make up this gaping lapse in your upbringing.

Is it safe to say that @Code Monkey is having a Randall moment, and that @Gloves has become Dante?

In all cases this situation, for some reason, reminds me of Kinky Kelly and The Sexy Stud scene. 😅

Damn, you are VERY spot on with Cody Monkey being Randall.  Also good example of someone being ignorant of a racial slur.  Just because YOU don't think it's a racial slur doesn't mean it isn't to other people.  Same wih caricatures.  Also I love how Code Monkey thinks that because that Japanese game was racist to black people it then that means they must be racist to the "white" characters as well 😆.  By the way, being racist to "all" races doesn't mean you aren't a racist.  "I hate all people" is not an excuse for being a racist/bigot.

Honestly I think the reason these "modded" games are in there the bootleg mini-SNES is to boost the number of games.  The Chinese nock-off company's goal is to sell more product with the least amount of effort.  This isn't a grand conspiracy for that company to fuck with kids.

ignorance is racism.

willful ignorance is worse.

I had a long response written out but I feel like continued discussion is not desired here so I just want to make a single comment in response. Just because I never learned how this works, that doesn't equate to racism. This is all very interesting and confusing to me at the same time but when you ask questions to try and understand, people lose their minds.

It doesn't leave people with a very good impression of your mindset, which will color future interactions with you. Especially given that you're an adult and just about everyone else here "learned how this works."

You might want to take the time to explore stuff like this and why it's a touchy subject. That way people don't start to think you were raised by wolves or something.

Anyway, [insert dead horse gif here], back on topic. Bootleg games can be a hoot, amiright? 😛

Thanks for the contribution. 🙃 Mine was a "Triforce of Irony" in response to the digital coding of Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork and Davy Jones entered the topic while claiming that there was nothing wrong. 🙃

But yeah... I tend to feel like you guys give me that response. With thanks that my PUNishment was what came in the mail today (which is not a Chinese bootleg, BTW). 😁

The black kid with big red lips is a classic racist meme from back in the day. Basically white people would do comedy skits and color their face black with shoe polish and put on puffy lips and mock black people by acting ridiculous (excuse me if you don’t like the term ‘black people’, but that’s what black people I know prefer). That’s actually where the term ‘blackface’ originated from (although I think nowadays people ignorantly misuse the word for anything and everything).

Racist cartoons back in the day would recreate these skits making black people as black as night and exaggerating their features, always making a mockery. This black kid on the Tom Sawyer box is drawn in the same style, although it looks kind of Japanese anime styled. Before jumping to conclusions about racism, I would assume the Japanese artist didn’t draw it to be intentionally degrading, rather he/she was probably just ignorant of the cultural sensitivity of this. You have to take into account that Japan had little exposure to American societal issues in the 80s and even less exposure to black people. It’s possible they just saw some old racist American cartoons from the era and copied it not knowing any better.

My local flea market slowly rotated out different plug and plays and eventually landed on fake NES and SNES Minis that look like that one. The SNES ones are always priced higher.

I've never thought about buying either of those though since they are a downgrade from some of the other plug and plays they had. Some of the older ones had cartridge slots for famicom carts, and one even had a little display so you didn't need a TV for it, though you'd still need to plug it into a wall so no gaming on the go.

I don't remember the older ones having these sorts of hacks, though admittedly I didn't go through them thoroughly. A simple Mario 256 hack (does anyone here know if there is one for the lost levels as well?) and pyramid can hold my attention span indefinitely. Well, until my thumbs hurt since these plug and plays sometimes (kinda often) have uncomfortable controllers

The sign over Ronald's crotch. It's obvious the news put that over to conceal the dick hacked into the game. The bag was also blurred out as it's probably something else vulgar.

The overall tent scene was in the original game, but they hacked it to make the kids naked. Hearts were added by the news show.

This is what the original game showed:

What's even stranger to me is that when the people hacked the game, WHY would you put the "porn" in there and naked kids??? Like.... why would you WANT to piss everyone off?

I get they're trying to change the game to not get sued.... but.... why make it "controversial"?

Someone hacked the hackers?

People are getting ridiculous, Black Man 2 is not racist. When Donkey Kong was made, there was a man that jumped so he was called Jumpman. If you modify a sprite to a black sprite, it's very simple to just call the character Black Man, it seems self explanatory.

And the shots of Ronald McDonald and his Magic Bag isn't even a hack, it's just the original game called M.C. Kids on the NES. All of that content is in there and appears to have been copied without changes.

I was expecting to see Custer's Revenge or Beat 'Em And Eat 'Em or something.

There are two toothpastes here in Taiwan (if you want either, please feel free to DM me and I'll try to mail you some at cost). One is called White Man Toothpaste, the other is called Darlie. With the latter, it used to be an offensive word with a "k" instead of an "l", then a year or two ago they even changed the Chinese text to something else instead of the translation "Black Man Toothpaste". Hmm, any idea why it's okay to be racist against some groups yet other groups everyone shouts and demands change?
