18+ Played

What was the first 18+ game you ever played?

Thought mine was robocop vs the terminator, but it was one of the splatterhouse games. I was about 14 at the time. My Mum freaked out and said I couldn't play it anymore, for fear of nightmares (which never happened)

What was yours?

It's hard to say for sure but mine was likely playing the first Mortal Kombat. There was an MK arcade cabinet in one of the University cafeterias while my mother was working on her degree. She would go up there on weekends sometimes to study and I'd get in some games to pass the time while hanging around.

A couple years later, when MK2 came to SNES, I used my pocket money to buy a copy from KB Toys but when my mother found out, she made me take it back (having it in the home was crossing the line, I guess?). The salesman was kind enough to let me exchange it and I picked up Donkey Kong Country instead. I'd say that was a pretty good trade.

Probably as boring as it is Mortal Kombat but in all fairness given it wasn’t rated I don’t count it.

So for me given I had the 17+ patch for it it would be Knights of Xentar (aka Dragon Knight III a DOS PC JRPG) which eechi aside is very good. I still even own a boxed copy of it 🙂

Leisure Suit Larry, followed soon after by Leisure Suit Larry 3, then eventually by "Softporn II" which I couldn't get into as a kid, as I didn't know what numbers it wanted when it asked for a woman's measurements and thought that it was some sort of age-based protection that I just didn't understand yet, similar to the historical questions that the Larry series asked.  I did, eventually, get into the third game, once I was old enough to understand what woman's measurements were, and actually be interested in women versus the idea of getting into a "naughty" video game to see what was so taboo.  I still chuckle inwardly at all the times I'd wait until nobody was home but my mother and I, sneaking out that "Softporn II" disk, then endlessly getting the message "IF YOU WANT A FREAK SHOW, GO TO THE CIRCUS!" because I'd enter numbers up and over 100, or down below 20 for each measurement every time, not having a clue what was going on (and thus proving I wasn't actually mature enough to play that particular game).

I did eventually also play stuff like Mortal Kombat, the GTA games, and all the sort of stuff that most folks did at one point or another, but my starting off point with titles intended for an older audience started right toward the beginning of games of that type coming into existence, and my Dad (and his circle of work friends who would either pool money to buy a game then copy it for everyone or just share whatever they'd bought) figuring that I either wouldn't figure out how to get into them or wouldn't be able to understand enough of what was going on for any real harm to come of it (which he was pretty spot on about).

I don't think I've ever seen a game with an 18+ rating, and I have like 3000 titles in my collection.

It's a UK rating system, before we adopted the PEGI rating system. It was originally made for rating movies.

I played a bunch of 18 rated games on N64, my favourite is Duke Nukem 64! 😄

I can’t use my pc currently but thought this would be a big fun to share as it’s on topic. I pulled my old game out knights of xentar and it’s in the manual for the upgrade. Read it a bit amusing. Also included is this nice game brochure of the titles.

To be fair, I rolled with it to generally refer to any game that had what might be considered "graphic" or "adult" content (excessive violence or gore, nudity, profanity, etc.), as I don't pay much attention to actual ratings...and games weren't rated in the U.S. at all until the ESRB in 1994.

I would have to say Mortal Kombat 2 on Sega Genesis. I didn't have this game at the time, but some friends in my class in early elementary school went to like an afterschool care home that had older kids in the house, and they had their sega genesis there that I got to play and we would play this and Sonic Spinball.

Honestly the water dragon or whatever that came and killed sonic on the bottom of the screen had a heavier impact on my psyche than Mortal Kombat ever did. 😂

I knew the song "Brickhouse" so I just typed: "36", "24", "36"
