Best games for NES, SNES, and Genesis

I've been planning to mod a SNES classic for over a year now and want to put the best games for NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, GBA, and DS on it. I'm hoping to avoid too many filler titles and just stick to quality.

Do you see any good games I'm missing? Something on the list that's not worthy of a best of list and should be eliminated? I want to know your opinion.

I am a fan of Spiderman and Xmen Arcades revenge on SNES. It's hard but more fun than Maximum Carnage imo. Also would reccomend a translated rom of sweet home for famicom. Great horror rpg

The lists are made based on suggestions I got in another forum. I was thinking of trimming the list down later but added all the games people suggested while they were actively replying to the thread.

Can you elaborate on what games do you consider unworthy of a 'best of' list?

I corrected the mistake with Darkwing Duck.

I'm really hoping to get a good list going for N64 and PS1... want to get 2 systems modded for myself and a friend... thanks.

You only have 160-180mb internally and that includes your save states. You can fit the entire NES library or about 100-150 SNES/Genny titles.

Are you planning to add USB or external storage?

I'm going to trim these lists way down. Too much filler. But yeah, I'll probably need to add a 4gb USB

Hey guys, any suggestions on shitty games that I should wipe off this list?

Also, does anyone have a personal favorites list for N64 and PS1? I might add DS and GBA in there too but I'm getting ahead of myself.. please share your favorites lists if you have them. I'm picking up my friend's nes classic on Sunday and am excited about getting these puppies modded with some slick games.. no filler junk.

Really depends on your own taste. If you really want “only the best” by a quick look I would blow away at least half of the NES list and probably more on the other systems. But if you want to really explore the library there are many other interesting things besides.

Best way to handle this without spending months or years reading new and old reviews, watching gameplay videos, and playing every ROM is just google, and read a few of top 10-20-50-100 lists on good websites. You can get a more solid impression than asking on a forum. I might put Klax, Rush n Attack, Shadowgate, and Rolling Thunder in my top40 but few others would. If you are trying to get every person’s top picks with double or triple digit numbers, you will never narrow it down.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I went with the lists from gamefaqs for N64 and PS1. I took off some sports games from N64 because I'm not really into them.

What I really could use help with is refining my NES list. I know that this is a strong NES community and I don't have a lot of experience with this system. I bolded the NES games I'm thinking of keeping. Some of the games I'm not familiar with, like Fire n Ice and Panic Restaurant, but I know they're expensive and sought after so I wanted to see what they're all about. Is there anything else that's not in my bolded list? Maybe I should just go off gamefaqs for the NES list too... any tips from yall would be super appreciated. I want to finalize this and do the mod. Thanks all.

Not sure I would put them on a definitive list, but I quite like Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Jackie Chan’s Action Kung Fu, Monster Party, and Shadowgate. Solely for variety’s sake, I would give Shadowgate top priority out of those four.

I don’t think The Little Mermaid is anything special. I’d remove that for sure unless it’s a nostalgia classic for somebody.

And I usually have a problem with including all the Megaman games on a conditional list. Sure, they’re all good games. But does one series really deserve twice as many spots as any other? I’d give 3 spots to Super Mario because those games are drastically differentiated from each other, technology-wise, but the Megamans really don’t have that. Neither do the Ninja Gaidens, imo.

I would go with Megaman 2 or 3, and one later game. And eliminate the rest.

I think at least half of the "debated NES games" are worth keeping in. Moreso than a lot of the games already kept in the list. Like, you can't have Ducktales 1 but leave out the clearly superior Ducktales 2. That said, I think the majority of the list is very good picks.

A few games not mentioned, that I'd recommend. Some of them I'd consider classics, other bordering "hidden gem":

Ninja Crusaders - Basically Ninja Gaiden with 1HKOs. Severely underestimated game IMO, and one of my favourites on the system.
Misume Ga Tooru (FC) - Extremely well polished game. Not the best Natsume game on the NES, but probably the best looking one, and everyone should play it.
Nazo No Murasamejou (FC) - Zelda as a mostly linear, fast paced ninja action game? Hell yes.
Nightshade - Kind of hit or miss, but if you're into point n click adventure it's definitely worth including. A unique twist on the genre that designs its way around the lack of a savegame feature. As a result it's more open ended, allowing you to take on various different objectives right from the start so that you don't need to repeat the same actions too often.
Code Name Viper - A really excellent Rolling Thunder clone (if you didn't play RT, think Shinobi 1 with contact damage), much better than the NES version of that game.
Tiny Toon Adventures - Super classic, well done platform game from Konami. Why this isn't commonly considered a top NES game is a mystery to me.
Gremlins 2 - This one is a classic to me. Just a really well done game with a memorable soundtrack.
Arkista's Ring - A true hidden gem. It's a little on the easy side, but I think it feels like what Gauntled "should have been". Hell, I'd trash Gauntlet from the list in favor of this.

In the case of Mega Man, kind of yeah. All 6 games are at least top 20 games in my opinion. If you need to eliminate one of them, I'd eliminate MM1, but I do hear a lot of people who also keep that one as their favourite. Definitely keep in MM4!

Similarly I think all 3 NG games are absolutely top tier. I can see 2 feeling like a copy of the first (it focuses more on stage design and gimmicks, but otherwise plays largely the same) - but NG3 is drastically different from the first two games. Vertically scrolling stages, no enemy respawns, completely altered moveset, etc. It might look similar based on screenshots, but when you play it you can feel the difference immediately.

I don't know about best but here are some personal favorites. . . (you'll notice a lot of RPGs)

NES - Caveman Games, Little Niki, Skate or Die 2, Dragon Warrior IV, Swords and Serpents, Ultima Avatar, Ultima Exodus, Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, Faxanadu

SNES - Chrono Trigger, 7th Saga, Final Fantasy II and III, Shadowrun, Earthbound, Lufia II

Genesis - Phantasy Star IV, Buck Rogers, Streets of Rage 3, Shining Force II, Beyond Oasis, The Super Fighter Physical releases (Wukong, Star Odyssey, ) and Pier Solar because they extensively increased the US RPG physical releases for Genesis.

Thank you all. I've added everyone's suggestions to the list.

I didn't really delete any games from the list besides sports games, which I generally dislike, except for a couple that I played as a kid that have personal nostalgic value to me (MLB and Tennis for NES, and NBA Jam for SNES/Genesis)

I also added PS1, GBA, and DS games using recommendations from gamefaqs top 100s lists. I alphabetized every list and put them in spoilers to make each section and the thread easier to navigate.

I might have a few titles that some would consider filler, but I'm afraid to delete too many games and wipe off a hidden gem that I might want to try later and then regret not having.

If anyone wants to recommend a game to add to the list or sees one that you believe really doesn't belong on a 'best of' list, I'm open to your suggestions. Thanks.

Phantasy Star is a Master System game. It's definitely worthy of being added, but at least not a Genesis/MD game.

I don't know how much of a challenge you like, but Dynamite Headdy and Contra Hard Corps are easier in the Japanese version and therefore maybe a bit better. If you like dungeon crawlers or rogue-likes, then I would recommend Fatal Labyrinth as well. Also, Galahad is an interesting and unique platformer that not many people know of. Mystic Defender may be worth considering too since it's pretty decent and extremely weird (in a good way). Saint Sword is another good action platformer that isn't well known. Then there's Slap Fight MD as another good shmup, Snow Bros. as a competent Bubble Bobble clone (if you care about something like that), Undead Line (if you want a brutally difficult shmup similar to Gaiares) and the imho best Action RPG on the system Tougi-Ou: King Collossus.

As for the NES I could recommend The Krion Conquest or rather the Japanese version Magical Girl Doropie, if you like games in the style of Mega Man. Holy Diver might be worth a mention too as it's similar to Castlevania. Another lesser known game on the Famicom would be Valkyrie no Bouken: Toki no Kage Densetsu, which is similar to The Legend of Zelda. Image Fight is an okay-ish game on the NES, but I would rather play the much better PC Engine version.

Anyway, the lists look really good so far and I'm sure that you'll have plenty of good games to play in the future.

I haven't played it, but I think Dynamite Headdy is generally considered mildly superior in the Japanese version.
For Hard Corps however, you should definitely go for the US version! It's one of the easier Contra games already (despite the misleading intro stage), and having three times as many hits just makes it a cakewalk.

I believe there's an arcade perfect port out on PS4. It's a great game - the PC Engine version isn't very good, and the NES one is horrible.
