This happens with a lot of businesses, but when you have people in charge of companies that hold grudges against other companies and feel like it's their job to try and muscle out the competition, they do this.  The Family Dollar/Dollar General rivalry is pretty infamous, but there have been others over the years.

Chick-fil-A and Raising Cane's has a similar rivalry. Cane's just opened a new store directly across from a Chick-fil-A near me.

I remember when the Sherman Oaks Galleria which for a long time was THE mall that was featured in movies and whatnot, had two anchor stores, a Robinsons department store and a May department store. Both were pretty heated rivals. Then they merged, and so the Galleria had a Robinsons-May at each end. It was trippy.

CVS is the same with Walgreens.  They've been trolling them for years opening up stores right across the street or close as possible, or if they find out they bought some land at a spot they'll try and do the same and perhaps get open first to scoop up the customers which is really really pathetic.

That's not the real reason they open their stores in the same places.  They hire consulting firms to determine the best locations for those types of business and often times both stores will hire the same consulting firm and therefore receive the same data.  Even if they use different consulting firms, it's likely that both firms will end up with the same location since they will be using the same data to make their decisions.
