Wild card for suggestions for those still choosing a host might be

 

Jim Carrey.  He has, of course, hosted SNL but is also a sketch comedy veteran from In Living Color.

Rick Moranis who was on SCTV but never made the transition to SNL.  HIs comedy career from the 80's is pretty legendary though.

You could also consider George Carlin.  An absolute God of 70's comedy who absolutely hosted the show early on.  This guy gave the show some edge.

Finally, Andy Kauffman - this guy sort of epitomized what SNL did well early on.  It was sort of a show for weirdos when it was hard to find other weirdos.  Today, Kauffamn would be a Youtube star.,

Darrell Hammond

 

Succeeding Carvey as the resident impressionist, Hammond fantastically portrayed many characters for 15 years on SNL. The most notable, probably being Al Gore, Bill Clinton, and the best Sean Connery impersonation of all time.

My favorite skit he’s in, even though Tim Robinson (a genius) steals the show IMO.
