  1. I have a cart from from People's Choice Video Express in Waukegan, IL which was actually a hometown spot of mine...I believe one of the largest video rental stores in the US at one point actually...over time it converted into a family fun center/video game arcade with skee ball and all that shit (another antiquated business venture) and up until very recently they always had a little remaining sad corner of DVDs and VHS and some common NES or whatever games you could rent or buy...that's all gone now but it's definitely a conversion spot and now called People's Choice Family Fun Center...even though my lady and I live in Chicago (I haven't lived in or near Waukegan in at least 15 years) and I don't visit Waukegan much anymore we'll pop in when passing through and take a dorky couple shot in the photo booth there and add some sweet flame background in on the options screen. Also, weirdly enough another current collector from Kenosha, WI I met through Instagram used to work there as a teenager, and also-also another buddy of mine scored a cib Action 52 for $5 in a liquidation tent sale the store did in uhhhh 1999? Jeez... long time ago. He still has it too.
  2. In regards to OP yes Sega Genesis carts always faced the way people are posting above pics of, cart lines up with the Sega logo orientation engraved into the plastic to the left of cart slot.
  3. Holy crap I remembered that VERY wrong. Apologies there...my brain was thinking about the Zeldas in the following shot. Should have cross referenced before commenting but was being lazy.
  4. I remember specifically watching some worker pack a Mario 2 at the factory on that "Nuts for Nintendo" news special where the cutout was on the left...just sayin'.
  5. I currently have every officially licensed North American NES game except Stadium Events, and every unlicensed North American NES game except Myriad 6-in-1, Bubble Bath Babes, and Cheetahmen 2......this "set" was the old school definition of full North American retail NES set that I've been chasing forever. In recent times people have started cutting out unlicensed entirely. Although I do like the tidiness of that idea I don't necessarily agree with it, but maybe it's just because I come from the days of the Mike Etler list. In addition to the licensed North American games I went ahead and acquired every licensed PAL exclusive game that wasn't released in the States as well. I would like to get the Hong Kong exclusive Mah Jong cart and a copy of Stadium Events some day, in some form, to have one of every officially licensed game despite region...over time this has been what I've kind of focused on but I still have love for all my loose unlicensed crap that just sits around on shelves (except for Tengen, I play the hell out of all those ones...and Micro Machines by Camerica). Every other system I just collect games I like and actually play......what a wild concept! EDIT: I also collected every issue of Nintendo Power stemming from 1 to 63 (I'll have to check but I'm pretty sure 63 was my cutoff...because it was the last issue to have any NES coverage). I also have every Sega Visions magazine because why not.
  6. Guess I got lucky. Mine is in perfect shape and I got it very randomly at a record store in Chicago that got some small NES lot in and let me trade a bunch of other media in to take it home.
  7. Also, my vote for rare licensed game goes to Nobunaga 2 or Pro Sport Hockey. Those were the two hardest ones for me to get when I finished my set (minus SE which I still don't have).
  8. Was Sharedata Chiller ever actually confirmed to be a real release? I thought it got dismissed/debunked as being some proto or review copies that leaked out? I remember poking around on the web once researching that thing and that was the consensus I thought.
  9. Me too. I felt gatekept any time I'd post over at NA in the later years. Half of my posts resulted in some old member being condescending or petty and I'd just throw my arms up with a big eye roll. Ultimately it discouraged me from participating even if I wanted to ask an earnest question about something.
  10. I just blurted out an answer with a millisecond of thought because I was already disinvested in the subject of the conversation and wanted to keep it moving. I agree SE is not the correct answer but just said something to keep the convo moving along; it's not my stone cold opinion.
  11. Random story I wanted to share that is somewhat pertinent to the conversation, or just Wata in general: A couple years back, right before Wata was officially launched, a buddy and I took a day trip out of Chicago and went up into Wisconsin in the dead of winter to hit a few game stores and flea markets in the Kenosha/Racine area. On our list of stops was a place I'd never been to before (but always heard of) called Inner Child Collectibles in Kenosha, WI. Was told by some locals they had some old games there so we checked it out. Wasn't really anything for sale out on the floor but there was an empty official World of Nintendo store cabinet against a wall, and stacks of really good uncommon NES games behind the counter (I saw the shimmering bright blue glow of a Pesterminator cart and that's all I can remember now). I inquired to the man behind the counter about the WoN cabinet. His response was, "Oh that's not for sale, it's my son's and he's just storing it here." Fair enough...I asked about the NES games behind the counter..."Oh those aren't for sale either, they are my son's, he's saving them for this video game grading service he's starting soon...maybe you've heard of him? His name is @supernesman on Instagram." Ah yes...that guy. I knew of him...I told him I'd heard of him and that yes I've seen the account. He then went on basically a 20 minute pitch about how the grading company is going to blow the hobby up and bring it to the next level...then inevitably asked me what game I thought was going to be the most valued/sought after game years down the road. I answered, begrudgingly (I was already annoyed with this conversation at this point), "I don't know, Stadium Events?". He replies, "No.........Super Mario Bros!" then went on to make comparisons to comics with first appearance of Batman or Spiderman and all that kind of stuff to get his point across. I kinda just nodded and politely bowed out of the conversation shortly after that. We said our goodbyes and left the store. When my friend and I got back in the car, we both started laughing about the experience saying "What the hell was THAT all about? Yeah right, Super Mario Bros?!? Grading games?!! What the fuck is that guy talking about??! Ok buddy good luck to your son with all that...hardee har har har *more laughing and shaking our heads in disbelief*"....and that was that. We went on with our day and didn't really give that experience much more thought until years later when that grading company did in fact explode in popularity. And that's my story. I coincidentally met Deniz's dad, at a small collectibles store in Kenosha he owns, right before the launch of WATA games, when it was still in its incubational period. In retrospect now maybe the joke is on us because we could have gone and scooped up all the sealed Super Mario Bros in the Midwest with that hot insider info, but...eh, I still think it's all just silly. It IS interesting though now, thinking back, that they already had an agenda for SMB to be THE game, or so it seems to me. Also strange there were a bunch of games set aside that supposedly belonged to Deniz, for him to grade with his own company? Maybe that's a complete assumption and those stacks of games were other people's stuff idk. Just a weird story I felt like sharing. That's all. Take what you will from it.
  12. My bad, I meant PAL exclusive not just UK.
  13. This. I'm in the same boat too. I just play a lot of the giant backlog I've amassed and can trim/curate more if I come across a real stinker.
  14. Seeing prices double/triple on games and looking at my shelf with a big smile knowing that I didn't pay that.
  15. Totally agree, which is why I stopped chasing anything for it. In fact, Soldier Blade was on my want list for a while but when it crept up to the $200-300 range for a loose HuCard I was out...so, nice to organically come into it years later. Adding to the discussion of weird systems you saw growing up..there must have been something in the water in my neighborhood because me, my next door neighbor, AND another kid on our neighborhood all got a Sega 32X around launch. Also...there was a total Flanders esque churchy family in our hood too...they had the wisdom tree NES games! I played Bible Adventures once and was like wow this sucks...I also got banned from coming over to play with that kid for swearing.
  16. Yeah I never ever knew anyone who had one growing up. Weirdest thing I saw was a Sega Master System back in the day; that seemed completely foreign and odd to me at the time when NES was dominating the world. Tg-16 is actually pretty fantastic but mine rarely ever gets use.
  17. That was the asking price and I happily agreed to it but obviously played it kewl. We talked through Craigslist and it took a few days to meet up but I have the stuff in hand now and it's all legit/working. I thought it was a troll the entire time but saw it through and it panned out. I've been "out in the field" for many years picking/hunting games but have never come across any Turbo stuff in the wild so I guess I was due. Sorry to link to Instagram but I can't properly upload the pic on here so here's a link: https://www.instagram.com/p/CRsaRavBCde/?utm_medium=copy_link
