  2. I think it's pretty well agreed upon at this point that at the very least any information found via code peeking will need to be shared immediately. There are a lot of broken NES games, but I think you are greatly over estimating the number that are broken. For puzzle games only 3/5 did code peeking benefit (Dr. Mario, Klax, Quarth vs. Wrecking Crew, Kero Kero). 2020 I don't think I code peaked at any of the 5 puzzle games (Yoshi's Cookie, Puzznic, Q*Bert, Tetris, Krazy Kreatures). Maybe Yoshi's Cookie or Krazy Kreatures could have some RNG manipulation but you wouldn't even need to code peek to figure that out. For Sports games I code peeked at 4/7 (World Games, Blue Marlin, Nekketsu Street Basket: Ganbare Dunk Heroes, Golf vs. M.U.S.C.L.E., Tennis, Soccer) although I barely did anything with Nekketsu Street Basket. 2020 I only code peeked at one of the five games (Caveman Games vs. Tecmo Bowl, Goal 2, Micro Machines, Heavy Shreddin).
  3. Hey Loopz is on my suggestion list too. I picked it up recently and want an excuse to play it. IDK. It feels like most people just don't care much for them outside of Tetris. Maybe I'm wrong, but things like no one wanting to pick Kero Kero for the tourney (besides Wiz at the very end I guess) is what lead me to say that.
  4. NES Puzzle game suggestions: Wario's Woods - Never played it, but looks fun. It's never been in the contest either it seems. I looks like the time race mode would be the easiest to make into a competition. Pipe Dream - Never played it, but looks fun. It's never been in the contest either it seems. There seems to be a kill screen at 8,388,608 points (= 2^23) so maybe a tiebreaker could be lowest level if multiple people get the kill screen. Yoshi - Never played it, but looks fun. Last played in 2017 Palamedes - Never played it, but looks fun. Last played in 2018 Kickle Cubicle - Never played it, but looks fun. Last played in 2018 Loopz - Never played it, but looks fun. Last played in 2018 Hatris - Never played it, but looks fun (although I've heard bad things about it). Last played in 2018 Qix - Never played the NES version, but I liked the GB and arcade versions. Last played in 2018 Solomon's Key - I've beaten it but never played for score. Would be interesting. Last played 2019 FC Puzzle game suggestions (I bought all of these recently but haven't gotten around to playing any of them yet. Also I don't think any of them have been used before): Babel no Tou - Looks a lot like Solomon's Key Binary Land - Seems like it would be fun, but I wonder if someone could just follow a longplay. Cadillac - I actually have played this one. To be honest, it's probably not that great of a game, but there is something about it that made me keep playing. De-Block - This one looks really promising for working well for the contest Flappy - Is kind of long, otherwise it would work well Gorby no Pipeline Daisakusen - If Pipe Dream wasn't enough pipes for you here's another pipe game. I'm actually really interested in this one. Knight Move (FDS) - A lesser known Alexey Pajitnov game Or we could just do a Zelda Speedrun.
  5. This would be a sure way to weaken my puzzle genre wins, lol. I would love to have more competition in those games but they always seem to have lower participation due to no one else liking puzzle games.
  6. I think Bea has looked into the code in the past but obviously it's not a reasonable expectation that anyone could do it. That's why I do agree that we probably need rules of some sort about it. I appreciate the people saying that if anyone wants to compete at the highest level, they should try code peeking themselves. But I just don't think most people want to play that way. If it's still allowed, I do encourage others to give it a shot. I don't think it's quite as hard as people think it is, and it can be fun like solving a puzzle. If anyone is interested, I would recommend starting with an NES tutorial such as Nerdy Nights and look through the NES dev wiki to at least get comfortable with ready NES code. Then this post might be helpful as a intro to code peaking I work through an example from Blue Marlin. Anyway back on topic. I do feel that most of your gripes could be solved by making any info found through code peaking, have to be shared immediately. In the case of Dr. Mario I would share about the bug and then the contest organizers could decide whether it should be allowed. Additionally, a fair bit of the workings behind the bug were already documented if you knew where to look (the TAS submission text and the page it links to). Of course like you said, it would be too much with to expect the contest organizers to find bugs like that. In the case of Golf I do agree it feels different from the rest in retrospect. Hence why I called it out specifically in my initial post. I would understand if a rule was made banning external scripts. FWIW, there is a fair amount of room to improve on my score. The TAS gets -40 IIRC and the Speedrun gets -21. I'm sure the speedrunner could beat my score if he took his time lining up shots. For the hole in ones, I don't remember if I even got any (maybe one). Even with the script a lot is times it just isn't possible for a certain wind or at least requires frame perfect shots.
  7. Didn't I win Krazy Kreatures though? Yep it appears so. I guess you weren't participating then though.
  8. I think the larger reason is that most people just don't care for NES puzzle games (with the exception of tetris). Like, even in the tourney no one wanted to pick Kero Kero (which is a great game btw) even though they didn't have to face me (except Wiz who did it as a wildcard pick against Bert). And neither of their scores came that close to mine despite it being one of the simpler puzzle games we've had. Even the first puzzle game I played in these contests (Yoshi's Cookie), I more than doubled second place (which would have been first the last time it was played) and that was with no ROM peeking. True. So many people have mad skills at Tetris. I've actually looked at the code before I even competed for a personal project, so I already knew the RNG was unmanipulatable. It updates every frame. Although, fun fact the version of tetris in the NWC cart is RNG manipulatable (based off of the Mario score or something IIRC). I can back this up. I enjoy it a lot more playing through my real NES and no way in hell am I going to buy all the games in the competition.
  9. I think I remember that the main category in Dr. Mario doesn't allow resets or Gameovers in the middle of the run because they can be used to manipulate RNG. But I think most other speedruns allow it. If we do more speedruns like Batman, we should come up with more solid rules for what counts as a submission. Like Moribus said, it's kinda disheartening to be beaten by a picture of a timer as opposed to a full video. But, I do understand that recording a video isn't the most accessible thing and will likely lead to lower participation. Also when I make my list I'll be sure to add Zelda again like I added last time. I think it would be fun. I'll put what I find in spoilers if it helps. The gist of it is I wrote a script that let you enter the wind speed, direction, and hole, and it would tell you what clubs/direction/power/curve to hit the ball at. I had to reverse engineer the code to figure out how the ball physics work, but when running it doesn't use any extra information about what's going on in RAM (I was still playing on my real NES). Given that most people in the contests don't write code professionally, the script could be seen as an unfair advantage.
  10. I guess I'll start with the code stuff. I agree that there probably should be rules around it at the very least. I think the best comprise that someone mentioned is that everyone is free to reverse engineer the code, but whatever they find needs to be immediately shared in the thread. Does anyone have any different ideas? How about using things like scripts to help out as long as they are completely external (like what I did for Golf)? IDK if it would actually be useful in games other than Golf, but might as well bring it up in case. Also, does anyone think we should ban RNG manipulation or is that fair game? I can't remember if anyone actually objected to me using that, but I can see the case against it. Still, it is a technique that everyone could use without knowing anything about the code. Although, it's mostly only useful for puzzle games and it seems no one else cares enough about puzzle games to spend the time learning a fixed seeded route. At some point I'll put together a games suggestion list, but my brain is too fried tonight.
  11. I'm not super knowledgeable on CRTs but I would imagine the geometry settings could only be changed via the service menu instead of the standard menu. Try to look up how to access the service menu for your model.
  12. Hmm, the images don't seem to load for me. I get the following error when trying to open the link: This site can’t provide a secure connection files.catbox.moe sent an invalid response. ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR
  13. I don't understand why NFTs are necessary for that to happen. Can you explain why? I don't have a super deep understanding of NFTs so correct me if I get something wrong. But, the actual data for the game wouldn't be stored on the blockchain, correct? It's just a proof of ownership. So, wouldn't that mean you would still lose access to the game if whatever service you bought the game through gets taken down? With the way things currently work, proof of ownership isn't the issue, it's keeping the game available for download. Most likely if the game is still available through the storefront you bought it from, they will also still know that you do in fact own the game. Similar to above. I don't see the use case for them that you claim exists. To me, it seems more like a solution seeking a problem. What is the "use case for them that can't be replicated with any other technology"?
  14. Yeah they are still around and you can order them specially online (although they are super expensive). But they are not mass produced so anything you would buy at a normal store would be the Cavandishes
  15. Nah. First, the fungi killed the bananas in the 50s so unless you are 60s or older they would have already been the other species. Also those older bananas weren't "fake", It's just that artificial banana flavoring ("fake" banana) is based off of those species of banana.
  16. I was just about to post this. Here's a link for anyone who's interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gros_Michel_banana
  17. I agree 100% with this. Similarly, I like Castlevania 2 even though it only has 3 easy bosses.
  18. Lol, so literally no one cleared their list? I suppose a lot of us (me included) posted their full backlog with no intention of beating it within a year. Definitely do it. It's a fun thing to track. Even still, I never let it stop me from playing games not on my list.
  19. Past lists: VGMC 1 - Day 31 List VGMC 2 (Remix Edition) - Day 31 List VGMC 3 - Day 31 List Day 1 (Title Screen): Title - Overlord (NES), I've done several of these already, so I have to refrain from the Zeldas/Marios/Megamans. It turns out I still have many great title screen songs. I've actually kinda picked a song from Overlord (aka Supremacy in Europe) in VGMC 3 but it was from the C64 version which has entirely different music (so it almost qualifies for day 9 only with a different console instead of region). Both are composed by Jeroen Tel, so both are kickass in their own way. Honorable mentions: Title - MOTHER, Title - Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos, Title - The Battle of Olympus (I played this one recently and was blown away by the title screen theme), Opening - Super Smash Bros. Melee (Ah nostalgia), Title - The Secret of Monkey Island Day 2 (Opening Stage/Grass Lands): Stage 1 - Batman Returns, I couldn't really think of many good Grass Lands themes except for maybe Green Greens - Kirby's Dream Land. So, I decided to focus on the Opening Stage themes instead. Another returning category, so I'll stay away from my honorable mentions as I've found more. Although I did put Batman: The Video Game as an honorable mention, Konami's Batman also has a great opening level theme. Honorable mentions: Stage 1 - Ghosts 'n Goblins (NES), Levels 1-3: Parking Garage - Target: Renegade (well I guess it's used in levels 2 and 3 as well but close enough) Day 3 (Simulation Games): Credits - Captain Tsubasa Vol. II: Super Striker, I do not play simulation games, so I figured I'd probably pick an Animal Crossing song. But it turns out there is one other song from a simulation game that I have in my library, Captain Tsubasa 2. Also it means I don't have to settle on one AC song. Honorable mentions (all AC lol): K.K. Steppe - Animal Crossing, K.K. Cruisin' - Animal Crossing, Stale Cupcakes (Aircheck) - Animal Crossing: City Folk, Main Theme - Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Bubblegum K.K. (Radio) - Animal Crossing: New Horizons Day 4 (Impressive/Mind-Blowing): Title - Ghouls 'n' Ghosts (C64), for some reason the only songs I could think of were all C64 songs. However, I think this song stands about the rest in terms of impressiveness. I picked it in VGMC 1, but I couldn't think of a more fitting song. To quote my original comment, "It's crazy how many different sounds Tim Follin managed to squeeze out of an 8-bit machine (a comment on the full OST listed 29 of them) and yet somehow it still feels like a cohesive piece that matches the games theme perfectly. Just watching the oscilloscope view is extremely entertaining in itself." Honorable mention: Monty on the Run (C64) (the musicality of the song is extremely good) Day 5 (PlayStation Exclusives): The 1st Tide - I.Q.: Intelligent Qube, there's a lot of great PS exclusive music, so I decided to go with something hopefully a little less known (IDK much about PS so hopefully I'm not too far off base). I.Q. has a kickass classical score. The track above is my favorite, but honestly the whole soundtrack is worth a listen. Honorable mentions: Pleasure Quarter - Gravity Rush, Klaymen's Theme - The Neverhood, Southern Front Porch Whistler - The Neverhood (technically it was a windows game first but only came to PS for home consoles), Polaroid - Vib-Ribbon, Overflowing Emotions - Vib-Ribbon Day 6 (Strange/Weird): Free Money! - Pikuniku, I didn't come up with anything super weird, but I think they fit and they are all listenable. I decided to go with this quirky song for a quirky game. Honorable mentions: Beep Bop Bo Shards - Skullmonkeys (such lovely vocals), Dogsong - Undertale, Temmie Village - Undertale (the first thing I thought of) Day 7 (Computer Games): Myth (C64), I have no knowledge of music for MSX-2 or Sharp x68000. So, C64 it is. I've featured quite a few C64 tracks in this list and past ones, so I'll try to seek new ground. But of course I still picked a Jeroen Tel tune. Honorable mentions: Title - Gauntlet III (my Follin pick), Spellbound (my Rob Hubbard pick), Wilderness/Title Theme - Golden Axe (I love that intro, especially that gliss at the end of the first two phrases), After the War (another good one by Charles Deenen), Ghosts 'n Goblins (and finally one from Mark Cooksey) Day 8 (Mini/Bonus Games): Secret Course - Super Mario Sunshine, I'm sure there are billion good ones, but I could only think of two. Still, I really love this one. Honorable mention: Minigame Parasail - Zelda: Breath of the Wild Day 9 (Same Game, Different Region and Song): Accursed Kingdom - Argos no Senshi (FC/JPN) / Cave - Rygar (NES/USA), I took a look at this list on vgmpf, but I only found one game that song I knew I liked and was changed beyond using different sound hardware (which disqualified all the FDS to NES ports). And this is cheating because I used it on my last list, but I felt I had to include it because I had no clue so much of the music changed. And thank god it did because I like the US version much better. Day 10 (Nostalgic): Grandma's Theme - Wind Waker, a returning category from VGMC 1. Most of what I said last time still stands. "Gamecube wasn't my first console, but it's the one that I first really got into gaming with and therefore the one I'm most nostalgic for." But this time instead of a SMS track, I'll go with a WW track. I always loved Grandma's Theme and it just sounds like the epitome of nostalgia. Honorable Mentions: Opening - Super Smash Bros. Melee (I mean my comment for it's honorable mention in day 1 was "Ah nostalgia"), A-Type Music - Tetris (GB) (before I got a Gamecube, I had a GBC and while I often played with the sound off, I also loved the Tetris theme) Day 11 (Rom Hacks/Fan-Games): Oath to Order - Moonfall: A Legend of Zelda Compilation, so I really haven't played any ROM hacks and therefore nothing came to mind. However, I remembered I bought this chiptune Zelda remix cart from our very own @TylerBarnes. That's a good enough excuse as any as to relisten to the full album. I choose Oath to Order because it is one of my favorites and also because the original never stuck out to me as remarkable to be. But, the remix is very well done especially with the smoothly shaped arpeggios. I'm not sure if it's still on sale, but if it is you can buy it here. Honorable mention: the rest of the album Day 12 (Wild West): New Heights in El Machino - Steamworld Dig 2, my first thought here was SteamWorld Dig 2. It very much has the wild west theme throughout the full game. Honorable mention: Precipice - Steamworld Dig 2 Day 13 (Remakes/Remasters): Tal Tal Heights (Heroic) - The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch), most of the remakes that came to mind have very similar music to the original. However, Link's Awakening for Switch is an obvious exception. I went with the great Tal Tal Heights as my pick. Honorable mention: Face Shrine (Level 6 Dungeon) - Link's Awakening (Switch) (I very nearly picked this as I normally don't care as much for the dungeon music and this is very much improved over the original), Title - Link's Awakening (Switch), Sword Search - Link's Awakening (Switch), Overworld - Link's Awakening (Switch), Player Select ZELDA - Link's Awakening (Switch) Day 14 (Dungeon): The Great Palace - Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, I thought we did this one already, but apparently not. So, time to whip out my Zeldas. I really enjoy Zelda 2's final palace theme. Honorable mentions: Dungeon - The Legend of Zelda, Hyrule Castle - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Hyrule Castle Interior - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Day 15 (Boss Battles): Pardoner's Dance - Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight, well we've done this multiple times, so I'm all out of choices if you include the honorable mentions. Or so I thought until I remembered the last game I beat had some decent boss tracks. This one is a lot more sparse and less driving than the rest of the boss music, but it's still my favorite. Honorable mention: Assault - Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight, Confrontation - Momodora Reverie Under the Moonlight Day 16A (8-bit): Match 8: Team USSR - Super Dodge Ball, apparently there are still several great NES tracks I've never mentioned. Here's three. Honorable mentions: Fish Got Away - The Blue Marlin, Heat Wave - Bionic Commando Day 16B (16-bit): Opening - Final Fantasy VI, I thought I had used this one before, but it turns out I haven't. Day 16C (32-bit): Dies Irae (Wolfgang Krauser Theme) - Fatal Fury 2, I think this counts as 32-bit. IDK really. Day 16D (64-bit): Title - Buck Bumble, always such a fun silly one. Day 17 (Racing/Driving Games): Las Vegas - Top Gear, I've used my Mario Karts already so on to the other song I really like. Day 18 (Short and Sweet): Spooktune - Undertale, I love this dumb song. Honorable mention: Victory! - Final Fantasy (the intro fanfare for this category), Item Get - Zelda (Various), Totaka's Song - Various Day 19 (Name Entry/High Score Screen): Name Entry - The Battle of Olympus, I had a hard time deciding between these three. I ended up going with the Name Entry theme since I feel like a good Name Entry theme is rare. Honorable mention: High Score - Eliminator, High Score - Commando Day 20 (Homebrew/Indie Games): Forest - Anodyne, I've featured most indie games with good music I know. But, this is one I've played recently. To be honest, part of the reason I like this one is because it was heavily inspired by Gymnopedie No.1 by Erik Satie (as noted by the composer in the comments). Day 21 (Gambling/Casino/Carnival Areas): Casino Calavera - Grim Fandango Remastered, gotta love that casino jazz. Honorable mention: The King's Court - Cuphead Day 22 (Saturday Morning Cartoons): Stage Mushroom Forest - Little Nemo: The Dream Master, I've just beat this game (on the 23rd as I'm writing from the future). I really enjoyed the game and this track remains a standout. Honorable mention: Moon Theme - DuckTales (I've used this one already), Scene 3 - TMNT III: The Manhattan Project Day 23 (Free Space): Zelda: Breath of the Wild "Kass's Theme" - The Game Brass, I decided to return to remixes with my free space. All of these released since I did the remix edition for VGMC2. And of course I had to pick a song from The Game Brass. They released two albums since then (Brass Castles and Horns of Hyrule) as well as an MSU-1 pack for aLttP. I couldn't not pick this one from their latest album. I'm a sucker for a cadenza and I love the Carnival of Venice references. Honorable mention: Super Mario Land Underground - The 8-Bit Big Band (that Bari Sax...), Zelda Majora's Mask - Oath to Order - Mart0zz (the mythical Mart0zz makes their annual appearance with a banger), Hacking the JANUS System - Julien Mulard (I wanted to call this one out because I normally hate this style of music but this track was really well done) Day 24 (Pinball Games): Title Theme - Revenge of the 'Gator, I don't know why this was the first thing that came to my mind but it was. Fun fact: this song was unintentionally ripped off my the famous Kick ringtone for the Nokia 3210. Day 25 (Acapella/Vocals): Douse Shinundakara - Gravity Rush, another returning category. Luckily I was introduced to the Gravity Rush soundtrack in VGMC2. Day 26 (Shmups/Shooters): Main Theme - Delta, for some reason I missed a lot of good ones the last time this category came up. Honorable mention: Main Theme - Eliminator, Main Theme - Commando, Ending - Crisis Force, Title - Air Fortress Day 27 (Unsettling/Foreboding): Title - Metroid, a classic. Honorable mention: Sweet Little Dead Bunny - Doom (I've used this for Evil before but unsettling works as well), Ending - Splatterhouse (Arcade) (I used this one for Sad but it also is Unsettling), Your Best Friend - Undertale, Unholy Captives - Return of The Obra Dinn (I wanted to fit in RotOD somewhere but it wasn't as foreboding as I remember) Day 28 (Final Boss): Gwyn, Lord of Cinder - Dark Souls, I don't care much for boss music so it took a while to find one I like but haven't used before. Day 29 (Secret Boss): Fight Against Culex - Super Mario RPG, I know this was used in the example but I couldn't think of anything better. Honorable mention: Last Battle - Cave Story Day 30A (Ending/Credits): Ending - Bandit Kings of Ancient China, a great song that I discovered via @Optomon's NES music list. Honorable mention: Ending - The Typing of the Dead, Ending - Blaster Master Day 30B (Favorite VGMC Song): Four Seasons - WarioWare, Inc. Mega Microgame$!, man there are so many that qualify. Just from earlier in this list I've already used songs from Gravity Rush, The Neverhood, Skullmonkeys, Fatal Fury 2, Top Gear, Crisis Force that I found out about because of past VGMCs. I ended up going with this one because before hearing this song I thought all GBA music was bad. This song blew me away. It still probably could still be improved with better audio quality, but I think it does work well on the GBA. Honorable mentions: Isle Of Inisfree - Endless Ocean: Blue World, Title - Gauntlet III, Stage 1&4 Part 1 - Super Spy Hunter, The Singing Alarm - Segagaga, Alpake Highlands (Paprika) - Them's Fightin' Herds
  20. I almost put other for sorting method as I couldn't quite decide. I don't think it should be pure alphabetical though. As wiz pointed out you get all the benefits of alphabetical via an index. Plus alphabetical gets complicated when you are dealing with translated titles. I would be fine with the book being sorted chronologically. I do think that would provide an interesting context to how the games evolved over time. On the other hand sorting by publisher/developer (I don't know enough about publisher/developer relations in the non-licensed world to differentiate the two) might give a better narrative into the companies themselves which also seems interesting. I keep going back and forth between the two but really I think the best choice would be which could you use to tell an interesting story. If a lot of these companies influenced each other, then it may be better to go chronological and introduce all the major players in the beginning or as they become relevant. If trying to weave together the story chronologically becomes too complex to describe properly, then sorting by publisher/developer might be best with occasional call outs to previous games from other companies.
  21. It's probably @RegularGuyGamer. He put the same thing on my gift last year.
  22. Ooo cool! I have a 10 hour car ride ahead of me tomorrow, so I'll have plenty of time to kill to translate it when I'm not the one driving.
  23. Just opened my presents. Thank you too my yet unrevealed secret Santa (presumably one of the Colorado crew based off the shipping address). You really out did yourself. These are some awesome gifts. One from each console I gave a list for. And yes, somehow out of the billion Zelda variants I own, I didn't have a copy of Hyrule Warriors Legends (well from the USA as I do have the JPN and KOR versions). It even came in a cool Zelda themed box that plays the item get theme when you open it. Also see if you can find the thirteenth ninja I've hidden in the picture. Happy holidays to you all!
