Mental illness

I think this country greatly needs to work on addressing mental health - that said the vast majority of such people are not violent. However, the violent ones need to be identified and removed to protect the public. You could say every murderer in history has had "mental illness" and whether someone truly is "mentally ill" or not is difficult and sometimes impossible to determine - there's not even a clear cut definition on what constitutes mental illness and to what gradation. While some people truly do not know right from wrong, again the VAST majority of criminals know what they're doing is wrong, and they do it for numerous reasons - the notion that they're "just hungry" is of course pure BS, more often violent criminals get some pleasure out of hurting others. All that said, I think it's a tragedy that this repeat offender has had such a violent record and was not behind bars. Now he faces up to 12 years in prison. The woman he attacked is undergoing surgery and who knows how her life might be impacted - and yet he'll get no more than 12 years unless she dies - this is SNAFU

It's too late for him.  But you try to cut off the next generation of psycho killers at the head by figuring out what went wrong with his brain.

Phew, if only it were easy... People have done research and we know psychopaths have "different" brain chemistry, but here's the catch. He's likely not a psychopath, and in fact not all psychopaths are violent. Here's a statistic for you, studies show that about 1% of non-institutionalized males in the USA are psychopaths which translates into over 1 million psychopaths out there - but again, that does not mean they're all violent and about to burst!

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4059069/

Also, how do you go "fixing" someone that may have different brain chemistry? Is that even ethical? I think the best we can do at the moment is try to help as many people suffering from mental illness, and we need to isolate the ones that show violent tendencies rather than letting them freely repeat criminal behavior.

Why bother with any of that, when Bezos and Elon Musk need 400 trillion dollars to play with space ships?

Edit: more investment into communities/education/ resources = less psychos and even less that act on their indulgences.

I fully support investing into education and resources, 100%!

I also fully support investing into space technologies which have innovated our world - my favorite example is GPS which was primarily developed by NASA and the USAF 🙂

Honestly, I think the priorities of many people is, shall we say "skewed" - here in the USA over $100 billion is spent on sports annually. And yet, people are complaining that nurses, you know the people that save lives, are getting paid too much...

https://www.thedailybeast.com/alt-right-podcaster-joseph-paul-berger-charged-over-arsenal-of-machine-guns

Joseph Paul Berger, a 32-year-old Navy veteran who lives with his parents in Bethlehem Township, was arrested Feb. 7 by federal agents who say they found 13 unregistered machine guns and 12 illegal silencers in a locked room in the basement of the family’s home...On his show, prosecutors pointed out, Berger goes by the moniker “GlockDoctor1488,” which begins with what appears to be a nod to the 14-word slogan used by neo-Nazis

Another right-winger piece-of-shite white supremacist who thinks a few guns will help overthrow the USA... can we just lock him up and throw away the keys please!! Of course his liars lawyers are already arguing "freedom of speech" blah blah 🤮

Well said.  Also look at the budget that went into space during the race to the moon.  It was just 2.2% of the federal budget from around 1960-72, now look at the budget...gets into fractions of a single percent.  Even what private is doing now scaled to inflation isn't as bad...yet it's easy to point fingers.  Private people can do private things.  What little the govt puts into space now has been buried under self inflicted debt and mismanaged entitlements, pork, and other waste that could be used to better peoples situations and isn't.  That's far more reckless.

Pedestrian Deaths Spike in U.S. as Reckless Driving Surges

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/14/us/pedestrian-deaths-pandemic.html

Going into the pandemic, some traffic specialists were optimistic that pedestrian deaths would decline. After all, millions of motorists were slashing their driving time and hewing to social distancing measures. The opposite happened.

Crashes killed more than 6,700 pedestrians in 2020, up about 5 percent from the estimated 6,412 the year before, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association.

Based on another commonly used road safety metric — vehicle miles traveled — the group projected that the pedestrian fatality rate spiked about 21 percent in 2020 as deaths climbed sharply even though people drove much less that year, the largest ever year-over-year increase. And preliminary data from 2021 indicates yet another increase in the number of pedestrian deaths.

Angie Schmitt, who describes pedestrian deaths as a “silent epidemic” in a new book, said the reasons included an aging population, in which older pedestrians are more vulnerable, and the growth of the Sun Belt region, where cities were designed after World War II to prioritize speed over safety. And ballooning sizes of S.U.V.s and trucks, which have grown heavier with higher front ends, strike people on foot with greater force than before.

AND, people - especially young people, feel they can get away with this. Sadly, too often they do.

During a clemency hearing in December, Postelle did not deny his involvement in the Memorial Day 2005 shooting deaths of James Alderson, Terry Smith, Donnie Swindle and Amy Wright. But Postelle’s attorney, Robert Nance, argued that his client suffered from a learning disability, the abandonment of his mother at a young age and had begun abusing methamphetamine on a nearly daily basis beginning at age 12.

“He’s a different man than he was,” Nance told the Pardon and Parole Board. “I think he needs a certain amount of forgiveness because he grew up in an environment that was almost exclusively negative.”

It's easy for an attorney who is getting paid lots of $$$ to say things such as "forgiveness...different person" but I wonder how this attorney would react if it was HIS wife or brother or family member that was brutally killed! I do not see this person as having any chance at all at rehabilitation. I do not see such a person as ever contributing anything to society.

Las Vegas woman gets prison in death of elderly man she shoved off bus

https://www.yahoo.com/news/las-vegas-woman-gets-prison-075757981.html

A Las Vegas woman was sentenced to eight to 20 years in prison Friday in the death of a 74-year-old man she shoved out the door of a bus in 2019.

"I’m sorry for the way that I was portrayed in my lowest and weakest moment of my life," she said. "The way that I’ve been portrayed, it’s just not fair for somebody who’s never been in trouble before."

Typical narcissistic bullshit from entitled worthless shit! She killed a man, and then says what's not fair is how she is portrayed! I hope she rots, she deserves far far worse than the tiny jail sentence handed to this disgusting excuse for a human.

Man gets probation for failing to return $55,000 rental vehicle

https://www.yahoo.com/news/man-gets-probation-failing-return-050100423.html

A Chippewa Falls man will spend three years on probation for renting a vehicle valued at $55,000 from an Eau Claire business and never returning it... A second misdemeanor count of bail jumping and a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct were dismissed but considered at sentencing.

That will show him! I'm sure next time he thinks about stealing something valued at around or over $50,000 he'll say "oh no! what if I get probation again?!"

Victim’s mother accuses judge of being swayed by ‘white woman tears’ in lenient sentencing of Kim Potter

I hope all of you forgive me for not going beyond the link. What I want to say about the mother, more than the family, goes against who I am. So lets just say that she is one of those examples on why I want to leave this country. 😶

Suspect in Bronx subway feces attack blows up at judge in courtroom tirade

https://www.yahoo.com/news/suspect-bronx-subway-feces-attack-053900416.html

The man accused of smearing feces on a woman waiting for a subway cursed out a Bronx judge during his first court appearance Tuesday... (Frank) Abrokwa (37 years old), who’s been arrested 44 times, has one felony conviction and 10 misdemeanor convictions on his record, a Manhattan prosecutor noted while asking for supervised release in a recent non bail-eligible case.

That's it? only arrested 44 times? Let this poor man go free NYC! Clearly, your reforms are making NYC safer and more appealing. I mean, who doesn't want to go into a city where no one is ever arrested, sounds truly like paradise...

Life isn't an action movie. It's clearly a Saw movie. This whole story is bananas top to bottom.

Woman Allegedly Put Man’s Severed Head in Bucket, Told Cops They Would ‘Have Fun Trying to Find All of the Organs’

"A woman allegedly murdered a man during a sexual assault, dismembered his body, and tried to clean it all up, but she forgot his head at the scene after she became “lazy.” Officers in Green Bay, Wisconsin, said they discovered the body part in a bucket with a “male organ.” Taylor Denise Schabusiness, 24, was charged Tuesday with one count each of first-degree intentional homicide, mutilating a corpse, and third-degree sexual assault, according to court records in Brown County."

“Schabusiness responded that the police were going to have fun trying to find all of the organs,” prosecutors wrote. “Schabusiness stated all of the body parts should be in the basement. Schabusiness stated there should be a foot or a leg in the minivan. Detective Graf asked Schabusiness what she did with the head, and Schabusiness stated she had put the Victim’s head in a black bucket and put a blanket over it.”

She allegedly said a bread knife worked the best on account of its serrated blade."

Suspect in New York subway feces attack, also charged in separate hate crime, released again

https://www.yahoo.com/news/suspect-york-subway-feces-attack-211823398.html

The Bronx district attorney confirmed to NBC New York that Abrokwa was again released on his own recognizance after he was booked on the new charges Wednesday.

None of the charges qualify for Abrokwa to be held on bail under New York state’s bail reform laws, NBC New York reported. City officials slammed Abrokwa's repeated releases. “This individual should not be out on the streets of New York and his release shows the scope of changes that we need to make in order to keep New Yorkers safe," Mayor Eric Adams said Thursday in a statement.

I'm sure so many in NYC are happy that AOC and others pushed for this bail reform...

How much do you want to bet that if either of these two were the next lucky recipient of a free poo face that a way would be figured out to incarcerate this f**kface?
