Is this the least exciting 'new' video game gen?

If a game only leads to points and more ways to get points, it's boring to me. Platformers, racers incl arcade and kart, fighters, most shooters, most run'n'guns, most action-adventures... All boring. My taste is more "Does it have a good story? Does it make you think? Is it at least 9/10?". On that list, only the Bravelies would have mild interest, and that's not enough to bother when I have better games on my backlog.

Nobody other than total psychopaths plays platformers for points, though. (I realize this probably includes many people at videogamesage but sorry, it’s true.)

and since when do most action-adventure games even have points?

Maybe what you collect in an action-adventure are instead rupees, better swords, more gear. It still doesn't lead anywhere or have any reason to continue playing (for me). What I mean by points includes any replacement for them too, including progress for progress's sake. "I beat that boss, and now my reward is a changed icon on the map", uh, yay.

You could probably make that argument for most games.

Everyone is entitled to like what they like but you seem way too picky with games, so your opinion is biased when you say the 3ds isn’t remembered fondly.

What are some games you like?

I tried to think of a game that both has a good story and makes me think, honestly an incredibly rare thing in video games (their stories are usually a means to an end moreso than a stand alone quality). Pretty much the only thing I could come up with from recent years was Virtue's Last Reward. Incidentally, that's a 3DS game 😅

I typically prefer gameplay over story.  But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy a good story.

The only game I've ever played with a story good enough to top the gameplay was Horizon Zero Dawn.  And that's not to say the gameplay wasn't amazing.  It was the only game I've ever played where I was looking forward to the next cutscene to see where the story was going next.  There were times when I almost wanted to rush through the gameplay to see the next cutscene.  But again, just to clarify, that doesn't mean the gameplay was boring or subpar.  I still loved the game and completed it 100% plus a platinum trophy.

In general, I also prefer gameplay over story. In a perfect world, both story and gameplay would be excellent, but it's just so rare. I have to give credit to Psychonauts 2 for nailing both of them though. The Medium has a great story and atmosphere bogged down by mediocre gameplay, but I still really enjoyed it as an experience. And then you have something like Celeste with a story that simply exists to serve the gameplay (which is incredible).

That's exciting to hear about Horizon since I just started the game. One of my good buddies has been talking up the game for years and I'm excited to see what all the hype is about. The opening section is decent and I see the seeds of an interesting story already being planted.

Definitely my feelings on the game too. Gameplay was really fun but the storyline really made that game great for me.

It has a bit of a slow start and even feels a little same old open worldy type game, then it really hits its stride and doesn’t stop being great. I think you’ll enjoy it 🙂

I'm aware I'm picky haha, just by expecting a story I'm already in the minority. With a giant backlog, it doesn't really hurt though. Virtue's last reward looks great actually, that makes one good 3ds game, thanks Sumez. Though I may play it on the PS4 instead of getting a 3ds.

@Shmup: I was making a counterpoint, it's not universally liked if here's a player who finds nothing good on there (now changed to one good game). As to what I like, besides the obvious AAA RPG series like FF and Tales, series/games like Resident Evil, Dead Space, and Horizon: Zero Dawn also fill all my criteria, even though they aren't RPGs or even close. They all had a good story, made me think, and were great games.
