Video game false memories

I wrote this letter to Nintendo's Game Counselor's over 20 years ago, in either 1999 or 2000:

I don't know why I didn't mail it; I probably either didn't like what I wrote (possibly) or just forgot (most likely). Anyway, I rented Super Mario RPG and "remember" something about Nimbus Land. I apparently saw Mallow standing at the bottom of some stairs, guarding a room that his parents were in. A few months later, I bought a copy of the game from a different video store that was closing. I played through the entire game and I didn't see Mallow guarding any doors or whatever. That led me to writing this letter.

In 2004/2005, I told some people on GameFAQs about this and they had no idea what I was talking about. However, some people did say they remembered rental copies being different. I think one GameFAQs user said something about renting the game and noticing the Gate level was selectable near the beginning of the game. Of course, he might've been lying or had a false memory.

I don't know if some rental copies of Super Mario RPG really were different, or if what I remember is just a false memory. Probably the latter, but I'm guessing I'll never find out for sure.

young king nimbus statue?  isn't there a statue that resembles mallow and then they find out it is young king nimbus?  I know it isn't in the palace right away, but maybe at a later point in the game?

No, it wasn't that. I have this (possibly false) memory of seeing Mallow on some stairs, and being able to talk to him. He said something about his parents being inside the room he was guarding, and wouldn't let me in. Despite this, I think he would still appear in battles. Anyway I played through the game several times, and never saw this again.

As a kid I had (still do) a copy of Mario All Stars that had a SMB3 glitch that would allow you to switch between the suits by hitting select. It also made a glitched out boot option. It didn’t always happen, but sometimes. Anyway, for years I thought it was a false memory because no one else I told that to believed me. But, all of my siblings remember it too! When I started collecting my brother gave me all our games from our childhood. I tried it a few times but couldn’t make it glitch. I should try again.

More detailed information here: https://tcrf.net/Notes:Super_Mario_All-Stars

It has to do with unitialized RAM, which means the status of it depends on the factory run of RAM ICs in your SNES, which is kinda random (but likely identical in chips rolling off the same assembly line, which is why you'd be able to identify a certain batch of consoles that work like that).
It's not that the SNES has a general debug mode activated as such, it's really just a coincidence.

I remember having a triple pack game cart for the NES that had Wrecking Crew, Duck Hunt and Super Mario Bros together. I would seamlessly switch from Wrecking Crew to Super Mario Bros without ever having to change the game pak. But there is no triple pack that contains Wrecking Crew, so somehow I completely forget ever having to swap the paks when changing games.
