what about having to do a recapcha wile registering?  if there bots that should in theory stop them.  all though... ive heard that those dont work very well anymore as the bots have gotten more advanced.

I have a Captcha on the signup form, it works for the basic bitch bots, but the more advanced ones still get through, and the actual human spammers usually get through.

ah...   figures.  ok i got one  but this might be trickier to do.  a custom recapcha  using the site mascot to beat a simple and easy 8-bit mario style level that can randomly generate a new level layout per user.

not an easy thing to make, but!  the bot people arnt going to reprogram their bots to get on this site.  plus it would be a fun thing for new users.  that would for sure stop the bots.

It's honestly not the end of the world to even just leave it as-is tbh. Yes, bots have gotten "smarter" but we see like, what, 1 Asian text bot a week? The more common ones are those that join the site, make an "About Me" section in their profile with a link, then dip. Those never bother users at all, and we mostly catch them as they join. There's a quick easy "flag as spammer" button we use in both cases, and it deletes everything they may have posted.

We're still looking at ways to further mitigate, but I really don't think the bots at this point are a big deal at all, just a minor part of managing a website such an this (ie a free place for anyone to join and chat easily).

Lol that's a great idea actually. Not sure how I'd implement it, but certainly something to consider if it's possible.

do any of the Sega-16 mods post here? I've been locked out of my account for a while and the password reset doesn't work

I absolutely despise all forums that still rely on the early 2000s technology and this is why I don't participate in any of them anymore. All forums are just such a dead meme nowadays. This place is the only exception

They don't use SSL - I'd not make an account there, in this day and age.

It was not really porn in the traditional sense.

Not to necro your response, but I do relate to you when it came to that. 😅

What I mean is that before I started to be a moderator at this anime/video game forum (circa the PS2 days), there was a member that got hit hard with the ban hammer by a mod that had a "zero tolerance for any stupidity" policy. With me finding out how stupid he was. Because instead of him accepting my offer to have his account reinstated, he chose to attack me with literal hardcore "porn" on the forum while using fake IPs that still ended up rerouting to his ISP. 😅
