  2. It's actually "A Fistful Of Dollars" that copies the plot of Yojimbo w/the Stranger in town who positions himself between the two waring families. I haven't seen Last Man standing though. Just for shits and giggles, here's a tangent upon a tangent: The plot of the Kurosawa film "Ran" was acquired from Shakespeare's "King Lear." Both deal with a monarch in his dotage who, due to senility, makes decisions concerning succession in regard to his 3 offspring which prove to be horribly destructive to the realm.
  3. I just saw "Once Upon A Time In The West" for the first time a few months ago. That theme is goose-bump city all the way through. Here is one of my favs.
  4. Only one I can think of off the top of my mind that hasn't been mentioned yet is "The Dark Crystal", but beware; it's a disturbing allegory about adults feeding on the fear of children, so if you go with it, be sure to apologize to your kid for me.. .. hadda reject a couple dozen "definitely not appropriate for an 8-year-olds", before I finally came up with this one.
  5. I'm a big fan of Devil Dice in both it's single and multiplayer modes. I guess the game sold well, but I rarely see it in a store and nobody ever seems to remember it when I bring it up.
  6. This is a good point. Never-the-less, the human capacity to miss what is in plain sight is simply staggering and at times shocking or even disturbing. Here's a couple of interesting videos on the subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=95&v=IGQmdoK_ZfY&feature=emb_logo https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=96&v=FWSxSQsspiQ&feature=emb_logo And human memory can be a very strange factor as well. Case in point, I could have sworn it was a button-down shirt, but i guess it was suspenders all along. @Sumez That's a useful tactic. How exactly does one go about accessing CHR Data?
  7. Maybe a correction of sorts. Just did some screwing around on the first level of a new game, dying late in the level and this title screen came up with Riki dressed in a white shirt and suspenders - Not really sure if it's what I saw earlier or not. I could have sworn he was wearing a button down shirt. Well whatever it turns out to be, it looks like he advances in age at least twice, having at least 3 looks. I'm feelin' now like if I play this game long enough I can turn him into hunched over white-haired fella with a cane...
  8. Uggh, ok, so I made it to the final boss the 2nd time around and died; big whoop. Then I anxiously awaited the title screen hoping to gain a little more insight as to whether Riki becomes an old man as a result of a certain number of points or as a result of completing the 2nd loop. The result: more confusion and mystery. So I got back to the title screen and - no old Riki, so I'm thinking, "ok that indicates that it's more likely to be the successful 2nd completion." Then I lean in to hit reset just cuz I'm wondering if the game will retain the high score or not and just before I hit it, I realize Riki is neither the old man nor the juvenile caveman in the animal skin. Instead, he looks like a young man dressed in normal clothes. He has no facial hair or glasses and instead of the animal skin, he's wearing what looked like a white button down shirt. I guess I was half asleep or I'd have a pic. of it, but when I hit reset (although it retained the high score afterward), young man Riki had gone back to being kid Riki... (........not to be confused w/Kid Niki) Guess I'll keep runnin' it until I get it again.
  9. Been real curious about Intelligent Qube for the last year or two - haven't scored a copy yet though. D.Q.B. sounds like a good time too - maybe the game to get a fan of old RPG's like myself back into it.
  10. I like how the music from Les Félins happens to fit with the video of Groundskeeper Willie sneaking into the office all shifty-eyed.
  11. Fi ad 1 id be representin' wipEout ! an id read: MY OTHER RIDE IS ANTI-GRAVITY
  12. Race 8 Pic is kinda dark, but my name's at the bottom.
  13. ...Or maybe after so many sequels they are trying to segway into a new era of fighting games featuring a veritable whos' who of licensed pop culture characters duke'n it out. It could be like Smash Brothers without any boundaries; anyone can show up to the party. How 'bout a 3-way Battle Royale between Al Jourgensen, Timothy Leary and the Easter Bunny? CHOOSE YOUR FIGHTER!
  14. Having Predator enter the Mortal Kombat Universe makes a degree of sense, I suppose. Maybe his Species is upset with Sub-zero for ripping off their trademark move, like - 'you think you can pull heads and spines off/out of bodies and not give us our due cred.? Think again.' The presence of Robocop seems pretty overly ridonculous though. lol. Perhaps it's a sign of the end, and an over-bloated, soon to be corpse of a cash cow just needs to be milked hard with the inclusion of unbridled chaos to ensure every last drop of sweet $M$I$L$K$ is procured before the franchise goes tits up. Not making a claim, just hypothesizing... Twenty-one sequels is understandable for something that defined an era, but still kind of a lot..
  15. GOOD GAMES: Dino Riki, Castelian, Castlequest, Crystalis, Faria, Galaxy 5000, Isolated Warrior, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu, Jaws(I always thought it would be awesome if there had been an expanded sequel that would have been similar in genre ie. RPG/SHMUP, except much more emphasis on a much bigger RPG overworld.), Kabuki Quantum Fighter(we got a tease at the end of the game when the hero assures us he'll be back for another adventure, but so far, not a thing), Lone Ranger, Milon's Secret Castle(In the same vein as the original rather than the Super Mario World -esque sequel on the Super Famicom.), Pinbot, Q*bert(I was thinking a port of Q*bert's Qubes here.), Snake Rattle 'n' Roll, Stanley - The Search For Dr. Livingston(Since discovering this one a few years ago I've thought it would have been so cool if they had continued to make games in this Metroid/Vania Style based on the exploits of other famous historical explorers taking place on various continents.), Xexyz, Zen: Intergalactic Ninja. ...and drum roll................ .......... ...... .... ... .. . !! Master Chu And The Drunkard Hu Two Mystery Of The Forsaken Shoe! ...Ok, maybe not, but I would probably buy it if it happened. GREAT TOPIC
  16. Midway included secret playable characters in more than one of their games. Not sure if that's the case with Mortal Kombat X or if Predator is a normal character due to the aforementioned connection. Anyway, here is Scorpion dunking in NBA Jam.
  17. I've just got my OG Commodore 64 and Apple IIc. Kinda on the fence about lookin' for an Atari of one variety or another. Would love to get more into it - at some point, some day ... Maybe. Fingers crossed.
  18. Yeah, google lead me to believe as well that it's nothing connected. I just figured I'd snap a pic to see if anyone would be like: "Oh that, yeah there's a port somewhere on the board that never got utilized..."
  19. Excellent Call. It looks like the beginning of the end goes back at least as far as the holiday season of '82 and the public would have been potentially aware by late September '83. I'll keep looking into it. Thanx!
  20. I was watching the original Predator movie (1987) the other night and when it got to the point of the Predator's decapitation/de-spine-ification of Billy it occurred to me that this was probably the inspiration for Sub Zero's famed original fatality move. It happened again in Predator 2 (1990) and then finally in the original Mortal Kombat (1992.) Then I found this pic. of Sub Zero performing the move on the Predator in the very recent Mortal Kombat X. Can anyone think of any other examples? Also, there was this one video game called Star Wars but there was a movie by the same name beforehand. ;9
  21. Jaws, Loopz, Marble Madness, Rad Racer, Paperboy 2, Qbert, Pinbot, Burgertime, Popeye, Back To The Future, Double Dragon III, Dino Riki... BTTF & D.R. can turn into longer plays what with multiple play-throughs and all, but these are the brunt of my pop it in for a quick play on the NES games.
  22. Uff da, I totally forgot about posting this related question. Not sure what this insert slip is for that came with my Intellivision II. It's Titled: SPECIAL CHARGING INSTRUCTIONS FOR ENERGIZED LOCKING SOCKET. I guess its possible that it's some random slip that has nothing to do with the console and just got stuck into the box along with everything else. Not sure. If anyone is familiar though, please drop me a clue as to what in flippin' perdition this thing is for, lol.
  23. So I was reading up a little on the release of the Intellivision II in the Spring of 1983 and feeling just a little surprised that the console is as available as it is considering that it came out in the year of the crash and all. I immediately began to wonder: Was there any precise day that the world knew it was the end for the consoles of that era? Was there perhaps a more general period of time that such a thing became clear - the Christmas season/December, to make an hypothetical example? I've tried punching the question into a few different search engines so far, only to get the same slew of pages simply stating 1983 as the date. I also watched a youtube on the topic by "Gaming Historian", in which he says at one point that the industry came to a "sudden halt", but does not specify when that would have been. He also mentions that at the time, most of the buying public was unaware of the crash as it affected primarily the industry rather than the consumer. I myself was but a whee whippersnapper at the time and recall little to nothing on the topic. As a collector of ColecoVision games I've noticed that there are quite few games for the console that came out in 1983 and that those games tend to be pretty rare as one would expect. This also would seem to imply that there was a significant period of 1983 that was still seeing the release of new material before the crash. So far my best evidence has been the discovery of a newspaper headline on the topic of "FADING DEMAND", with a date of Monday October 24th. Anywayz, I thought I'd sound out any established or aspiring gaming historians we may have among our ranks to see if/what sort of evidence or reasoning anyone is able to produce in favor of a more precise time period than simply, 1983.
  24. Needed a break from NES today so I decided to give Cliffhanger on the Sega CD a go for the 2nd time ever. Like the first time, I made it to the first checkpoint of the first snowboarding level and not much further. I think it's an underrated game, just has very little room for error on the snowboard levels. Once I'd had enough abuse I decided to take in a few rounds of Space Harrier for 32x - Made it to the boss of level 7 of 18. -Very fast first person shmup, the kind of thing the genesis was made for.
